Laughing Liberally To Keep From Crying

Laughing Liberally's Katie Halper and Spencer Ackerman discussed politics with some PUMAs yesterday in the streets of Denver, a few blocks from the Pepsi Center, trying to understand their point of view, and...hoo boy.

What is the point of this? (4.00 / 6)
Do you really think ridiculing Hillary supporters is helpful right now?

We all know the PUMAs have their heads up their asses. So stop giving them more press.

it's time to bury it. the more you pay attention, the more you divide us. (4.00 / 1)
i agree with Jason C.

These persons (4.00 / 5)
were never Dems, and probably not Hillary supporters. One can always find crazies by walking the city streets, but what's the point?

Duh! (0.00 / 0)
"We don't vote party line" she said wasn't it, or something like that?

"There's a difference between being a Democrat and being democratic."

That woman was NEVER a Democrat! Just another lying Republican.

Hmmm..... (4.00 / 1)
Well, they can't just come right out and say that they're racists, can they?

(I'm not saying that these particular people are, I'm just saying that polling reflects that a lot of Hillary supporters state that they just can't "see themselves" voting for Obama. Since their policy stances are virtually identical, makes you wonder why?)

Don't just take my word for it.... (4.00 / 1)
The heads of this country's largest unions (AFL-CIO, UAW, and the Teamsters) are stating it publicly:

Unions tackle racial issue in election

Speaking to the Michigan delegation to the Democratic convention on Wednesday morning, AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Richard Trumka talked about a woman -- a labor supporter and a Democrat -- he knows in Pennsylvania who could not bring herself to vote for a black man in the party primary.

"Democrats can't tap-dance around the fact there's a lot of people out there like that woman," he said.

Um (4.00 / 3)
we just got the trad med to shut about this.  Why even post this? Who cares about these people?

Question - Are PUMAs Disaffected Democrats? (0.00 / 0)
It's certainly possible that PUMAs are just dirty tricksters following the Free Republic philosophy.

However, if PUMAs are dissenting Democrats, then they are truly "swing voters".

I would hope that Hillary's speech and efforts this week would boil down the PUMAs to just the dirty tricksters.

But if not, then the question becomes - what more needs to be done? Would it be more difficult to win back such a constituency - relative to going after true "swing voters"? If so, then perhaps we should not bother.

Alternatively, can they be won back by "energizing the base?" Would a stronger commitment to eliminating the gender gap in pay make a bit of difference to PUMAs?

If they think McCain (4.00 / 1)
will do better for women, they're not worth thinking about, much less pursuing. The only way to "win them back" where they never were would be to offer them anti-schizophrenia meds. Forget 'em.

It was funny (4.00 / 1)
Like watching those videos with Scientglogists. I don't see the harm in posting this on Open Left. Who comes here but.... us?

I know PUMA's (0.00 / 0)
and these are not PUMAs.

So what do your pumas believe? (0.00 / 0)
I'm genuinely curious. There seems a lot of variance in PUMA land.

when confused irrational views are held by so many?

Yes. Of course. (0.00 / 0)

Not exactly a gathering of eagles on either side (0.00 / 0)
One side didn't know McCain had been a POW and the other side thinks that fact is all that matters and, even worse, that McCain doesn't support spying on Americans.

Hoo-boy indeed.

John McCain doesn't care about Vets.

Ummmm... She was joking (4.00 / 1)
Didn't you hear Spencer say "He should probably talk about that more". She says in the end "I'm being sarcastic". You probably should have watched all the way through.

No I didn't hear that (0.00 / 0)

Nearly pissed myself (4.00 / 3)
When Katie said she didn't know McCain was in the service and then Spencer saying that McCain ought to talk about it more....

That was fantastic.... Screw the detractors... its fun to fuck with the Bat Shit Crazy.

Great job (4.00 / 1)
You have my full support in making fun of these people.

Loved the part where you claimed you didn't know McCain was a war veteran.  "What, was he in World War II??"

These people are not Democrats... (0.00 / 0)
and probably never were.

Personally I believe that any real Democrats threatening to vote for McCain over Obama are bluffing. The ones that aren't probably will just stay home.

There is no justifiable reason to vote for McCain 2nd after Hillary over Obama. Especially not from a feminist/woman's issues POV.  I can understand being a little sour over losing the primary but if any of them are serious about that threat then they are just being childish.

McCain is probably even more of a misogynist than W. Bush ever was. Anybody who thinks he would do better for women than Obama is simply delusional.

I don't buy the argument that they are racist either. Most bigots who are racist are also sexist and would never vote for a female. There maybe a few HRC supporters who will stay home this Nov. but I don't think its a widespread phenom- that we should be worried about, or cater to.

End this war. Stop John McCain. Cindy McCain is filthy rich.
