The Palin Doctrine: You Pay for Your Rape Kit, I'll Pay for My Tanning Bed

Laughing Liberally To Keep From Crying
by Katie Halper

Sarah Palin was ambushed by Charlie Gibson with a gotcha question about the Bush Doctrine. Well, maybe Palin isn't an expert on the current president's doctrine, but, as her hero Virginia Woolf would have it, the governator has a doctrine of one's own, the Palin Doctrine, which strikes a balance between governmental largess and governmental neglect.

Living Liberally :: The Palin Doctrine: You Pay for Your Rape Kit, I'll Pay for My Tanning Bed
Under said doctrine, for example, the government will pay for basic necessities such as installing a tanning bed in the Governor's mansion. We all know a depressed Governor makes a depressed state, and nothing gets rid of Seasonal Anxiety Disorder better than a fake tan. So Palin was acting with the economic and emotional well-being of Alaska in mind, when she had a tanning bed installed in her house.

As the women of Wasilla know, however, the Palin doctrine doesn't rejects government hand-outs such as rape kits. During Palin's mayoralty, women were stuck with the tab for their forensic exams, which range from $300 to $1,200. Palin refuses to perpetuate the endless cycle of rape-victim welfare. By paying for rape kits, the government would be rewarding people who break their abstinence-only pledges, which, as we all know, are sacred to the entire Palin family, especially Bristol.

But by charging rape victims, the government encourages women to keep their purity pledges to their fathers. Plus the expense, makes women think twice about crying wolf, thus helping to reduce Alaska's per capita rape rate, which stands among the highest in our great nation.

I guess her fundamentals aren't strong (0.00 / 0)

Nothing to do with economics (4.00 / 1)
Palin's you-pay-for-your-rape-kit policy had nothing to do with saving money and everything to do with her extreme views on abortion.

The standard rape kit includes a morning-after pill to prevent an egg fertilized by the sperm of the rapist from attaching to the uterine wall and developing into an extremely unwanted fetus.

In Palin's bizarre interpretation of the reproductive process, this constitutes an abortion.  Period.  End of story.

Alaskans pay for her tanning sessions (0.00 / 0)
As they pay the electric bill for the Governor's mansion. I wonder how they feel about paying for some of Sarah Palin's beauty regiments rather than helping rape victims?

with gov palins (4.00 / 1)
position on paying for the rape kits for women it sounds rather similar to how some men blame the victim in these cases, a gop politician with no heart or sense of compassion, now thats a surprise.

not sure that was appropriate (4.00 / 1)
Considering that it's a personal family matter, I'm not sure it's appropriate to bring up the Palin household's teen pregnancy issues. These are deeply private things, and we know all we need to know about them from the governor's press statements.

Even the Obama campaign itself, right after Palin's daughter's pregnancy was announced at a McCain campaign press conference, suggested that we should all leave the families out of it. And I, for one, have had enough of hearing the media talk about Bristol Palin's pregnancy; the poor girl must have been embarassed enough that her mother went and told the whole world.

And preemptively, Halper, I know how you are, no talking about the Palin household's underage drug use issues. They're good kids, from a loving, two parent, White, heterosexual, god-fearing household, and they deserve every chance at getting themselves straightened out. It would be very unfair to bring up that private, family matter, either.

Is this sarcastic? (0.00 / 0)
"They're good kids, from a loving, two parent, White, heterosexual, god-fearing household, and they deserve every chance at getting themselves straightened out"

Your implication is that IF these demographic criteria were not met, then perhaps, prison or boot camp might be the proper way to "straighten" them out.

Somehow it's seen as intrusive and innappropraite (4.00 / 1)
to mention that White Trash Barbie's teen son went on a drunken rampage and trashed a bus, then got sent to live with an aunt. So much for parenting skills. For the life of me I can't see this as inappropriate. Intrusive maybe, but it does address the hypocritical attitude of the entire nutwad Right. Make this idiot a parental icon when she has the habit of farming the munchkins out to other family members when things get tough? Despite any arguments about the kids right to privacy this is relevant and important stuff. IF someone gets blamed for exposing every kink in these poor children's nature, let it be their loud mouthed obscene mother who was STUPID enough to accept a senile old man's offer of a place on the presidential ticket. SARAH trashed these kids lives, not the media reporting on their escapades.

Misplaced sympathy for innocent victims isn't all that good an idea right now. What about all the innocent victims who were made to pay for their own rape kits, or would be denied emergency contraceptives if this moron manages to get elected?
Shouldn't those victims be considered too?

Its the hypocrisy (0.00 / 0)
When the GOP stops using "Family Values" and "Culture of Life" as nothing more than political slogans and code-worded dog-whistles, then maybe it might be time to stop calling them on their hypocrisy when it comes to their owen lives.

Its just like Senator McCain using his political position to shield his spouse from the legal implications of stealing drugs from a charitible organization, or forging signatures to feed her addiction. While it is sad that Cindy has to re-live those dark days and be embarrassed all over again, the fact that it undermines the very character issue that John McCain has made the center-piece of his campaign (Honor) makes it very relevant to the discussion.

I'd point to another "right-wing" slogan and ask that the families take such succor as they can from the bromide: Time for a little personal responsibility. Bristol Palin is no victim, she knowingly engaged in unprotected sex and got preganant as a result. Cindy McCain knowingly abused prescription drugs and then used her position and money to not only acquire those drugs, but evade the legal consequences of her actions. Now, my personal outlook will be to provide whatever aid and comfort these two might require or request, so long as it does not include supporting the silencing of those that might discuss their situations in whatever terms they choose to express their thoughts.
