Cities in Dust: John McCain & The Last Days of Pompeii

by: Paul Rosenberg

Sat Oct 25, 2008 at 22:30

One of the most annoying things about John McCain is the creepy way he has of saying, "My friends," as if he were Mafia don, insinuating a deep connection that you were never a willing party to.
Paul Rosenberg :: Cities in Dust: John McCain & The Last Days of Pompeii

But, then it dawned on me, that although that was clearly what eminated from his being, the universe had other things in mind, things I already knew very well, from a song that Souxsie and the Banshees released the same year that McCain was first elected to the Senate,  a song that echoed with with the refrian, "my friend," a song--fittingly enough--about the destruction of Pompeii.  And so, to exorcise the creepy insinuation McCain's most unwanted familiarity, I take this occassion, this Saturday Night, to share this antidote with you:

    Cities in Dust
    Siouxsie and the Banshees

Water was running; children were running
You were running out of time
Under the mountain, a golden fountain
Were you praying at the Lares shrine?
But ohh oh your city lies in dust, my friend
ohh oh your city lies in dust, my friend

We found you hiding, we found you lying
Choking on the dirt and sand
Your former glories and all the stories
Dragged and washed with eager hands

But ohh oh your city lies in dust, my friend
ohh oh your city lies in dust, my friend
    your city lies in dust

Water was running; children were running
We found you hiding, we found you lying
Water was running; children were running
We found you hiding, we found you lying
your city lies in dust, my friend
ohh oh your city lies in dust, my friend

Hot and burning in your nostrils
    Pouring down your gaping mouth
Your molten bodies blanket of cinders
    Caught in the throes .......

Ohh oh your city lies in dust, my friend
Ohh oh your city lies in dust, my friend
Ohh oh your city lies in dust, my friend
Ohh oh your city lies in dust, my friend

Your city lies in dust, my friend
Ohh oh your city lies in dust, my friend
    Ohh oh your city...

Cool. I've always thought (0.00 / 0)
that this was a catchy tune, but I never knew the words.

Well, despite your efforts, I'm going to try to not to have this song forever linked in my mind with McCain (and his very creepy "my friend" bullshit). Instead I'll just think happy thoughts about the apocalypse or something.

As for McCreepy's running mate, NHL teams that have invited Sarah Palin to drop the puck are now 0-2. And to make matters worse, Palin's red carpet took out the home team's (St Louis') goalie on Friday night. Way to go, Hockey Mom!

Those poor schmucks don't have any say over being used as props like that, and then--what an ignominious way to get injured!  Sheesh!

What a jinx!

Thanks for passin on this vibe (4.00 / 3)
I actually saw Souxsie and the Banshees during the heyday of the punk music movement at a club called the Vortex in Covent Garden. As this was all happening during the pinnacle of Thatcherism, there was a very strong political message from punk bands that is instructive to progressive ideology in the current authoritarian climate of our politics.

Gah! (0.00 / 0)
Thank you, Paul. I will be having nightmares tonight.

What a song. Too good for the demise of McCain, though.

Siouxie (4.00 / 1)
Siouxie Sioux was one of the few who could pull off the goth look in bright yellow.

For Sarah Palin (4.00 / 2)

Cry For The Moon
Follow your common sense
You cannot hide yourself
behind a fairytale forever and ever
Only by revealing the whole truth can we disclose
The soul of this bulwark forever and ever
Forever and ever

Indoctrinated minds so very often
Contain sick thoughts
And commit most of the evil they preach against

Don't try to convince me with messages from God
You accuse us of sins committed by yourselves
It's easy to condemn without looking in the mirror
Behind the scenes opens reality

Eternal silence cries out for justice
Forgiveness is not for sale
Nor is the will to forget

Virginity has been stolen at very young ages
And the extinguisher loses it's immunity
Morbid abuse of power in the garden of eden
Where the apple gets a youthful face

You can't go on hiding yourself
Behind old fashioned fairytales
And keep washing your hands in innocence

The song is really directed towards the Catholic Church and their cover-up of sexual abuses, but close enough.

Lyrics for Sarah Palin indeed! (4.00 / 1)
You can't go on hiding yourself
Behind old fashioned fairytales
And keep washing your hands in innocence

But.. but...Obama's a Muslim Socialist!

Flashback (4.00 / 1)
There's a film from 1986, Out of Bounds, which includes a clip of Siouxsie performing Cities in Dust in full regalia at the Dirt Box in LA.

She did have a way with her.

Let's give it up for Heart, too! (4.00 / 2)

"Sarah Palin's views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women. We ask that our song 'Barracuda' no longer be used to promote her image. The song 'Barracuda' was written in the late 70s as a scathing rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business, particularly for women. (The 'barracuda' represented the business.) While Heart did not and would not authorize the use of their song at the RNC, there's irony in Republican strategists' choice to make use of it there."

Ann and Nancy Wilson rock...in every sense of the word!

Reminds me of Kill Bill vol 2 (0.00 / 0)
McCreepy's campaign and the shrills now seeming to get louder as their house of cards burns to the ground reminded me of the scene in Kill Bill vol 2 when the Bride removes the last good eye from Elle Driver and Driver thrashes around trashing the trailer in the process.

I have "Cities" on my (only) playlist (0.00 / 0)
Siouxsie and John McCain -- ok, there's a comparison you don't see/hear/read everyday. Creative thinking there Paul.

Voted yesterday here in Maine. Here's hoping to Jesus H Christ we don't lose. I am determined to think as though we will -- it's my way of preparing my self for the pain of disappointment. But the numbers are just so damned purty!

Rosenberg is going back, he's going way back . . . (4.00 / 4)
and oh, he makes a great analogy!  What a cool analogy.  I am glad someone finally addressed McCain's weird "my friends" speechifying.

Your post got me thinking about another politician, who opened a great speech by referring to some of his listeners as "friends."  That politician was Marc Antony in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar.  Antony opened up his eulogy of Caesar with this memorable line, "Friends, Romans, and Countrymen, lend me your ears . . .."  Shakespeare saw Antony as a politician of extraordinary skill and wrote a speech befitting Antony's greatness.

As a politician of such extraordinary skill, Antony knows better than to refer to all of his listeners as "friends."  If he were to stop at just friends, he would lose those in the crowd, who do not consider themselves to be his friend and Antony wants to persuade as many as possible.  So, he goes on to address, not just his friends, but all citizens of the City of Rome and then all citizens of the Roman Empire.

When McCain says "my friends" he loses a lot of listeners, who think, "Wait a minute, I don't consider you to be my friend."  And while they are thinking that, whatever point McCain is trying to make is lost.  Antony, on the other hand, has everybody listening at the end of his line.

Shakespeare--greatest writer in history of the English language.  McCain and his speech writers?  Not so much.

Bravo! (4.00 / 1)
You teased that out most expertly!

"Friendly" perspectives (4.00 / 2)
Excellent deconstruction. I'd change one thing:
When McCain says "my friends" he loses a lot of listeners, who think, "Wait a minute, I don't consider you to be my friend."

I believe a  lot of people are thinking about it from the opposite perspective - not how they feel about him, but how he feels about them. And they smell the "friend" thing for the bullshit that it is. And it's insulting and demeaning.

But perhaps that's one of those differences without distinction. However, it'd be an interesting study to see an analysis of "I don't consider you a friend" vs. "I know you don't consider me a friend" reactions. I wonder if we'd see a big difference along gender, ethnic, and party affiliation lines?

Don't mind me. I haven't had any caffeine yet.

I Sort of Think It's A Both/And Thing (0.00 / 0)
But I agree that some would probably tend one way more than the other.

It could have made for an interesting discussion on Seinfeld.

I think she did! It was so sparkling it was almost mesmerizing. It sent little starbursts through the screen and ricocheting around my room!
