Obama To Lose Votes in Eastern Pennsylvania Tomorrow

Philadelphia sports fans have been waiting for a championship for 25 years. It almost happened last night, but the weather and MLB idiocy forced a controversial postponement of Game 5 of the World Series, setting up a 3-inning ending at 8:37pm Wednesday night, after an infomercial from Barack Obama. Philadelphia is a very angry town right now, and Barack Obama is playing with fire by running his infomercial directly before the game. Championship-starved Philly sports fans (I among them) will not appreciate a political commercial delaying an already-delayed outcome, and the man running that commercial will receive his fair share of ill will. If the Phillies lose tomorrow night, god forbid, Obama will likely be blamed by a large percentage of the local population. This may all seem ridiculous and childish to many of you, but if you understand the mind of the Philadelphia sports fan, it should make sense. He should pull the commercial and run it after the Series ends.

Update (Wed 1:24am)
: Since I didn't make it clear in the original post, I'd like to add that of course I know electing a Democratic president next week is more important than any sporting event, even a Phillies World Series. But not everybody feels that way (and by definition those people would be swing voters), so this may be a tone-deaf political move.

My father, a livelong Phillies fan, died this past June. I want the Phillies to win because he would be so pleased.

BUT...the country and our future is more important than a 20 minute delay in a baseball game.

Think about how sweet it will be when the Phils win and BO does too.

I'm just saying its bad politics to potentially anger voters in a swing state, and I think the timing of this commercial might do just that.

Pick the more likely overheard comment in a Philly bar at 8:25pm tomorrow night:

"We ARE the change we've been waiting for! Go Phils!"

or

"Why is this a%%hole still on TV and where's the effing baseball game?!?!"

Uh, why would we listen to someone in a bar who calls (0.00 / 0)
Obama an a%%hole?  Clearly a McCain supporter.

I think your "concern" is way overblown.  The half-hour was announced well in advance and was going to precede a potential game 6 of the World Series, which would have been played here in the Tampa Bay area.  Now that weather has played a major role what would you have Obama do?  Pull the half-hour event?  That is just plain dumb.

Nobody in their right mind is going to BLAME Obama, unless you are already a McCain supporter in the first place.  I would say most are fine with the game starting 30 minutes later, for cripes sake.  Who did they blame when the game the other day did not start until 10:00 PM?   Even though I am from Tampa and a Rays fan I have found an appreciation for Philly sports fan that I never had before after they gave "hockey mom" Palin her richly deserved due at a Flyers game.

For some odd reason you are making the mistake of listening to the "Joe the Plumbers" of the bar scene and assume them sincere instead of purely partisan.   A little less "concerned," please.

The game is not being postponed - even FAUX NEWS said so... they are dropping the pre-game blab-fest BEFORE the first pitch was to even happen to carry the Obama commercial - they said the first pitch wasn't set to be until 8:35 ANYWAY!

Jeez.....

The ball game is not delayed (0.00 / 0)
it's just preceded by an infomercial instead of a pregame show.

"Our first pitch for the world series is usually around 8:30 anyway - so we didn't push back the game, it was really just about suspending the pre-game -- you know, Joe Buck," said the account executive, Joe Coppola. "That's all we did."

He said World Series games this season have begun between 8:22 p.m. and 8:35 p.m.

"We didn't push back the game at all," he said. He also said Obama had initially arranged to buy the time only if the Series were over before Game Six (in fact, a rain-delayed Game Five will continue tomorrow night), but Fox then decided to sell the campaign the time whether or not the game was played.

"By no means did they push to get us to accommodate them with Game Six," said Coppola, whom the Obama campaign suggested I call.  "We're just missing the pregame, which isn't a big deal for us. It was a business decision."
