Prelude To A Revolution

I just got back from Broad Street, and I have never, ever seen anything like this. After an utterly insane bar where the only way to keep standing was because there was no way to fall over (too many people), my friends and I started walking up Broad Street starting at Pine. We only got two blocks, to Locust, before you couldn't walk any further. For those of you not from Philly, that is four blocks from City Hall:

Humanity was in all directions. Hundreds of people were above us, standing on newsstands, lampposts, subway entrances and window ledges. People were setting off fireworks, hugging and high-fiving anyone in sight, and futilely trying to send text messages (it took me five tries just to send one). We walked around City Hall, and it went on in every direction. Twenty-six blocks later, horns were still honking. Hundreds of thousands of people. Larger than any gathering I have ever attended, including any and all protests.

And people were happy. Different races, different genders, different ages--everyone has smiling and hugging and cheering and slapping hands. And more than a few people started chanting "O-bam-a" right along with "Let's Go Phill-ies." Time and time again I heard "let's do this again on Tuesday."

And so, the largest city in a swing state in the entire nation went nuts. Our first win since 1983! Some called it the Curse Of Willy Penn, but maybe it was the Curse Of Reagan. We--the largest city in a swing state--hadn't won a title since his approval ratings recovered in late 1983. But we won tonight.

My head is spinning. Let's do it again on Tuesday.

Congratulations! (4.00 / 2)
Maybe someday, Clevelanders will get to have the same experience!  Not in my lifetime, I'm sure!  :-)

It must feel great!  Congrats again!  :-)  I was a big fan of the '93 Phillies with Dykstra and Kruk (my favorite player) and, of course, Mitch Williams (ugh!)

Let's hope the Indians are next!  BTW, Congrats to Charlie Manuel... there's our Cleveland connection!  He's an interesting character.... a little too eclectic for us when he managed our team, but he's a great baseball guy, and I'm glad he's got a ring.

REID: Voting against us was never part of our arrangement!
SPECTER: I am altering the deal! Pray I don't alter it any further!
REID: This deal keeps getting worse all the time!

Always loved Philly (4.00 / 1)
That town always felt like a special place. Thanks for sharing the experience with us. Let's do it again on Tuesday.

Congratulations! (4.00 / 5)
But isn't it concern trolling to call Pennsylvanis a "swing state"?

Uh, PA is not a swing state (4.00 / 3)
Check out that guy who posts at OpenLeft, not the big media sites.

Enjoy it!  Philly fans certainly waited long enough.

philly feels different this morning (4.00 / 1)
mannnnnnn waking up today was a great feeling.  i know a lot of folks on the left side of things dont get the passion of a sports fan (and yes, i know many do) but this is such a joyous moment here and such a lifting of a burden - years of hopes and dreams and people pouring their frustrations into these teams for some feeling of greatness.  well now that collective victory and celebration is here.

wonderful to see so many people embracing each other and feeling united.  just posted this in sirota's thread

and i need to find some copies of the newspaper to put away just like my parents did and were able to show me throughout the years.  who knows when the next will be?  time to savor.

i'm fairly new here and i didn't realize you (and so many others here) were from philly.  very cool to see.  great post.

An incredible response to Obama's TV appearance! (0.00 / 0)
Wow, I've got to say that we saw nothing like that here in the Midwest.  I mean, Obama's TV production values were right up there, and it was a compelling story - but we didn't have people lined up in the bars!  My hats off to you guys in Philly - real political animals!

Um... Baseball?  Still going?? The season didn't end when the Twins lost????  Phillies won?????  Nevermind... ;-)

War is Peace; Freedom is Slavery; Ignorance is Strength; McCain/Palin 2008

this photo shows just how appathetic americans are (4.00 / 1)
look at this, for a baseball team, which none of the people have a financial stack in, people fill the streets.

our government blows billions of dollars on a bank bailout, won't deal with health care, snorts a 100 billion a year in a stupid war killing thousands, and we're lucky if we can get 500 people to show up.

We have hundreds of thousands of people (4.00 / 1)
turning out every day to elect Obama and to end the nightmare of the last 8 years. Are you turning out?

Such a magical year.

Here in Chicago, we're getting ready (4.00 / 1)
for a big party, too.

The newspapers are reporting that City Hall is girding for a million people coming downtown to grant park.

The official shindig is only allowing in 65,000 ticketholders plus 7500 staff and bigwigs.

The rest of us have to make due with giant video screens.

But, Obama will be celebrating his victory with several hundred thousand (or million) of his closest friends.

Pine to Locust (0.00 / 0)
They don't look much alike, one has needles and one has leaves with very unpleasant thorns.

But they're only a block apart.

Congrats on your win, if only it had been the A's of my youth!
