"Center-Right Nation" Watch - Feingold's War Opposition Should Disqualify Him From a Chairmanship

Digby has the goods on Democratic Villagers in D.C. asserting that Russ Feingold's opposition to the Iraq War - which is congruent with President-elect Obama's and the American electorate - should disqualify him from assuming the chairmanship of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Because, in our "center-right nation," everyone loves the Iraq War.

Meanwhile, the New York Times' David Brooks dreams of a Barack Obama presidency whose primary aim is making wealthy suburbanites like him happy, in this a country whose landslide election of a man billed as a redistributing socialist displayed absolutely "no sign" of a "movement to the left."

UPDATE:Commenter Haggai makes a great point:

DC insiders tend to say ridiculous things, but I'm not holding my breath for anyone else to say that opposition to the Iraq war is more disqualifying for being the Senate Foreign Relations chair than it is for being president.  That's some powerful stupid.

Yes, indeed - that is some powerful stupid.

See my comment below. Indirectly, this meme is already being pushed, that the war was justified, and only its implementation was flawed. The fear of being labelled anti-war, and knee-jerk embrace of militarism, is still very strong in the beltway, despite Obama's win. Folks like Brokaw with his war-worship memes still rule their world, and if Obama wants to change that, he's going to have to work on them, as Reagan did (but in the opposite direction).

that's the dumbest thing I've heard since Palin thought Africa was a country (4.00 / 1)

David Brooks (0.00 / 0)
was dropped on his head as a child.

Michael Feldman must be some species of idiot.

Anyone who is even-handed between those who opposed the Iraq Invasion and Occupation and those who championed it must be suffering from a learning disability.

As someone who has a learning disability... (4.00 / 1)
I'm offended (Well, I have Asperger's Syndrome). Even people who have learning disabilities are smarter than these morons.

Pundits already on top of this one (0.00 / 0)
I was watching post-election analysis panels on CSPAN today, and found it a bit odd to hear one of the pundits claim that "of course, the Iraq war is unpopular because it was executed so poorly", and not because it was a dumb, crazy and unjustified war from the start.

I couldn't figure out why they'd bother to articulate the internals of public opposition to the war in an election year where Iraq just wasn't that big of a foreground issue (although it was surely a powerful background one, like Katrina and other the other GOP disasters).

But now it makes sense. Whether or not they know about Feingold making a bid for the Foreigh Relations committee (is he, btw?), I'm guessing that they were trying to preempt (or, perhaps, unconciously enabling an attempt to preempt) any true liberal from becoming chairman of this important committee.

The Village, being the Village. I should also add that in all of these panels, they were uniform in pushing the "this election was not a liberal mandate" meme, along with the "well there go those crazy left-wing bloggers and activists again, with their silly demands for social justice and stuff that we don't care about cuz we're all doing ok ourselves" meme.
