New Yorkers Are Way Ahead of Their Governor

For some odd reason, Democratic Gov. David Paterson of New York is pushing budget cuts and regressive tax/fee increases, and refusing to support a tax on his state's many extremely wealthy people - about as bad a public policy as you can come up with in a recession. But a new Siena poll shows that New Yorkers inherently understand what's the right course of action:

Notice those incredibly high numbers in support of taxing rich people. Maybe the governor will get the message.

Paterson Just Earning (Wall) Street Cred (4.00 / 2)
C'mon, Paterson's just going through this charade so that he can earn cred with the Wall Street crowd and the Upstate troglodytes.  Sure, the package he presented was about as draconian and regressive as ever invented by man, but just think about next year.  He can go to all of those Upstate communities and brag about how he fought the good fight but was forced by those dirty fucking hippies down near the Sodom-on-the-Sea to pass higher taxes on the uberwealthy.  It's a win-win from Paterson's point of view.  He just doesn't think that he'll get primaried going into the gubernatorial election cycle next year.  He just may find that a lot of "natural" supporters don't need people like him.

David, I disagree with you on a lot of things (Holder being the most consequential) but you're spot on, on this one.  And I'll admit your Maddow segment below was pretty darn good too.

God, complimenting David Sirota.  What have I done? ;)

What the? (4.00 / 1)
Diverting tuition hikes from the university to the state budget? That's not a tuition increase--that's just a tax on students. That's pure, concentrated evil.

Oh (4.00 / 1)
I should emphasize that would be a tax on PUBLIC UNIVERSITY students. Cornell, Columbia, etc students would be exempt, natch.

Kaine and VA (4.00 / 1)
Meanwhile Kaine's plan in VA revolves around raising the tax on cigarettes by a whopping 30 cents a pack.

Corzine raised the sales tax but not business taxes here in NJ.  Excuse me, business and income taxes are both lower than in NY and most businesses are located here for the customers, not for tax advantages.  This year?  He's talking cuts.
