Use Your Blog and Profile a Bush Dog Democrat

Why Profile a Bush Dog?

Ok, so you want to profile a Bush Dog Democrat.  That's very good, because the first step in a campaign to offer sustained criticism to Bush Dog Democrats is to get to know the people voting against core progressive values at key moments.  Who are they?  What is their district like?  Do they face a primary challenge or did they face a close election last cycle?  This information needs to be accessible and in one place for easy access.  With this profile, activists and donors can learn about these members, and we can run Google ad campaigns that target them effectively.  Additionally, these members can then know what activists think of them.

Which Bush Dog should I profile?

Matt Stoller :: Use Your Blog and Profile a Bush Dog Democrat
Every Bush Dog at this point has been profiled.  Not all of these are complete, and not all have been profiled by local activists, so if you think you can do a better job or know a lot about one of these members, don't hesitate to do another profile or leave a comment.  I'll include as many profiles on the Bush Dog blogroll as people decide to write.

How do I do a profile of a Bush Dog?

Here are some good resources:

  • District information: SamL created a nice spreadsheet with district information for every Bush Dog
  • Open Congress: OC has a profile on every member's voting record, a collection of recent news and blog posts, and some voting record comparisons.
  • OpenSecrets:  This site will show you who is donating to Congressional campaigns.
  • OpenSecrets Travel:  This site will let you track who is paying for Congressional travel.
  • Congresspedia:  This site has a nice profile of every member, as does Wikipedia.
  • Progressive Punch:  This site compares voting records of members to progressive stalwarts according to issue category.

What we need is a brief profile of the member, their voting record, their personality, and the district and its politics.  Is there a primary challenge?  Is the member well-suited for his or her district?  Did the member do something to mitigate this criticism?  Remember, this is not an attack, it's a profile so we can get to know these people and eventually persuade them to do the right thing.  It doesn't have to be comprehensive or long, just enough to get a sense of who this person is and how they do their politics.

If you have a profile written, email me at stoller at or leave the link in the comments.  It doesn't matter if you profile someone who has already been profiled, that's fine, the more talk the better.  And it doesn't matter if your profile is positive.  This is a research project so far, not an attempt to primary these people.

Very good work, I put it on the Bush Dog blogroll.  A couple of suggestions.  I'm having trouble seeing the data you put out there, could you fix that?  Also, can you make the writing flow better with a narrative?  It feels disjointed.

I've tried to clean it up some. The census data table is giving me fits. If I edit the post using WordPress most of the date goes away.

Think I've got that fixed. Looks Okay when I log on anyway.

Trying to get folks to add info via the comments. Seems to be getting some response.

I really think this effort will ultimately have an effect.

Keep pushing.

more detail (0.00 / 0)
Good stuff.  Can you add more detail?  These posts are a lot of opinion, so that if I were a new reader I'd find it tough to to get to know these by reading this profile.  Also, please shy away from the strategy stuff of whether they should get primaried or not, that just gets in the way of really understanding who they are.  It's much more useful to know if there is a primary opponent, how much they won by in their last elections, etc.

You could and should include whether they should be primaried on a follow-up post.

Thanks for the critique (0.00 / 0)
I'll work on more detail for these two districts.  Both posts were written days after your first post on the Bush Dogs, and I didn't have much to compare them to.  I'll look at some of the other profiles that have been written and try to provide a more complete picture.

I hope this is more what you're looking for.  Researching rural districts such as AR-04 is challenging.  It's a big district, and the largest cities aren't much bigger than 30-40k people.

Of the 6 districts in my immediate vicinity (AR-02, 04, and TN-04,05,06, and 08) only 2 (AR-02 and TN-05) cover primarily urban areas.

I should have something for TN4,5,6 and 8 over the weekend.  I'm talking to people in those districts for more background as we speak.

Additionally, as more details emerge on the two I've already written, I'll update the posts.

Thanks again.

Hi Matt (0.00 / 0)
I'm starting a related project, searching the campaign contributions made to the Blue Dogs from the major Defense Contracting corporations.

Here is a link to the initial effort in a DKos diary:

When I get all the info compiled, I'll email you the results so that the data can be incorporated into your Bush Dog project here. This Defense Contract money is blood money. It helps explain how the blue dog's votes are influenced.

I have a profile on Herseth Sandlin, but no blog.  Can I e-mail it? Where?

I copied the Herseth profile as a DailyKos diary, but without pictures and graphics.  They're not allowed, huh?  Anyway, the profile is at http://www.dailykos..... Hope it's OK. Without the graphic I will have to edit out the last sentence.

Donnelly - IN-02 (0.00 / 0)
Here's a profile I wrote on Joe Donnelly in IN-02. He has a 73% rating at progressive punch and voted for full Iraq funding and the FISA warrantless eavesdropping. There are other conservative votes against stem cell research and hate crimes protecting gays/lesbians and the disabled.

Please add it to your list. Thanks
