Ricardo Montalban, aka. Khan from Star Trek II: Wrath of Kahn, is dead.

Khan always struck me as a character way before his time - kind of like a sci-fi version of a neoconservative (a neo-Khan?) with his delusions of galactic power and revenge.

More importantly, Montalban was an important pioneer for Latinos in Hollywood. As the Huffington Post reports, the longtime president of the National Council of La Raza called Montalban "a hero" and noted the actor's contributions to his community, including his role helping found the ALMA Awards, "which honor and encourage fair portrayals of Latinos in entertainment."

May Montalban rest in peace, and speaking for trekees everywhere, let me say we'll miss you, Khan.

Can we send all the NeoKhans out to Ceti Alph VI?

REID: Voting against us was never part of our arrangement!

truth or consequences (4.00 / 1)
Weirdly, I know Ricardo Montalban solely as a disembodied voice reading recursively looped tourist-info scripts somewhere near the low end of the am radio dial out on the rural highways of New Mexico. I don't think I've ever seen him in a movie or anything.

WHAT? (4.00 / 3)
You never saw Star Trek II?    My god, get thee to a video store and watch... probably the best of the original cast films.

misspellings can be funny (4.00 / 1)
When I hear 'Kahn', I think of some relatively chill middle-aged Jewish guy.

Donkeylicious

Check out the "Space Seed" episode of Star Trek TOS (4.00 / 3)
He owned that episode....damn fine actor.....and what a great Ahab he played in Wrath of Kahn.....

I wonder (4.00 / 2)
will his coffin will be upholstered with fine Corinthian leather?

Ricardo (4.00 / 3)
Kahn was one of the best villians ever. Arrogant, superior, vain, condescending... Montalban nailed that role.

He had the best dying line in a movie:

Khan: [quoting from Melville's Moby Dick] To the last, I will grapple with thee... from Hell's heart, I stab at thee! For hate's sake, I spit my last breath at thee!

Another great line, "revenge is a dish that is best served cold" (apparently a Klingon proverb, who knew?)

Loved the comment about the "fine Corinthian leather", kbuck

TV news? Bad judgement (0.00 / 0)
The TV news kept referring to Montalban's pedestrian role as the host on "Fantasy Island" without mention The Wrath of Khan.  What fools.

Khan was a classic.  Fantasy Island is best known for a dwarf saying "de plane, boss, de plane."  There is no comparison.  Thanks to the wonders of film, we'll all know the difference for a long time.
