A few of us libruls went trap shooting today.  Here's me firing a shotgun at orange clay pigeons flying at medium velocity.  I hit 9 of 25.  I have no idea how that is for a first time out, but I"m going to assume it's astonishingly good since I didn't expect to hit any.

Also, Atrios and Matthew Yglesias both eloquently point out that our own dear leaders Hillary Obama are refusing to lead, especially on Iraq, where they will obviously, upon assuming office, steadfastly maintain the occupation albeit at a lower level.  I find this puzzling for Obama since he's younger and presumably not affected by Vietnam, so all I can assume is that he's basically a very smart political hack and not much else.  Clinton is just kind of conservative.  Anyway, the point of their blog posts is that these are our nominees, and we're letting them get away with tricking us even as we feed them money and that kind of sucks.

This is an open thread.

Are you going to go hunting? (0.00 / 0)
I know this isn't liberal correct, but well?

Iraq will be irrelevant... (0.00 / 0)
...because Iran seems to be about to happen.

Little quaint notions like "who controls Congress in 2008" are going to be steamrolled by the reality -- global war, thousands of troops dead, insanely high oil prices, massive economic upheaval, an upward spike in terrorism in US territory, and the last vestiges of our democracy extinguished for good.

A completely unnecessary, avoidable, self-inflicted reality.

I want to hope. I want to believe that our elected representatives understand that the consequences of allowing an Iran attack to go forward are far, far worse than the possibility of losing a few votes next year because they tried to put a stop to Dick Cheney's mindless belligerence.

I want to hope that rationality has not completely left the building.

But my hopes dim more each day.

Most of us Americans have been blessed. Most of us have never had to experience living in a dictatorship. I've known people who have -- they tell me all about it, they tell me all about the freedom they came to America to enjoy.

It appears that we're about to find out what that kind of life is like.

And all because one of our political parties was taken over by sociopaths, while at the same time the other political party was taken over by cowards.

  A perfect storm.

It's not over until it actually happens. The Cat 5 hurricane over the Atlantic might turn away from the continent into the open sea at the last minute.

But it's shown no indication of doing so.

I am forty-three years old. This is the most existentially frightened I have ever been in my life. Whether it's because I'm more aware of things than I used to be or because we really are sitting at the precipice, I don't know.

I don't have a tidy finish here. I just needed to get my thoughts out. I hope that after two centuries and change, American constitutional government can survive this extraordinary stress it's been under for the last seven years. But I'm less optimistic than ever.

That's part of the Bush Doctrine (0.00 / 0)
As our Dear Leader has expressed in his writings, the use of pre-emptive attacks to render those designated as "enemies" is now part of the US strategy.  Thing is - such a doctrine requires that the action be repeated (presumably until all the "bad guys" have either been killed, imprisoned, or convinced to stand down).  One pre-emption does not a doctrine make (especially when it doesn't work very well).

So, yes, a pre-emptive attack on Iran is something that the Bush League would definitely consider and advocate.  But, I don't think the Pentagon will go along with it, they are too thinly stretched and the Neocon junta has been damaged by the Bush years.

But, Democrats can get the US involved in wars, too.  I'd like to hear a Democrat, or two, stand up and directly repudiate the Bush Doctrine, but it hasn't happened yet.  I would not be surprised to see a war with Iran begin under the next administration.  Perhaps not pre-emptively, rather based on some kind of trumped up charges that Iran has crossed the border into Iraq and, therefore, "started" the war.

the numbers aren't important. HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (0.00 / 0)
did i mention to HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!take a lesson or two. when you learn the form practice at home with an unloaded weapon. bought my grand kids both .22 rifles. my granddaughter didn't like the color, so i painted her stock electric pink. i take my grand kids out to sand burr gun ranch. ashley the lady that runs the place teaches gun safety and then how to shoot. in that order. we shoot bowling pins. i would have to join a shooting club to shoot clays. .22s are real cheap and the grand kids love banging the bowling pins. we don't hunt anything, but i don't care if you do or not. i have been hungry before, maybe again. be a biathlete this winter. tougher than it looks. !!!!!!!!!!
