COLUMN: Our Addiction to Fake Outrage

It's outrageous that President Obama gets driven around in a limo! It's outrageous that John McCain wore expensive shoes! It's outrageous that Michael Phelps smoked some weed! Welcome, as I say in my newest newspaper column, to a nation now addicted to fake outrage - a nation that feeds on made-up controversies about total non-issues. And if we don't break our dependency, we're really not going to solve the huge challenges we desperately need to solve.

I tied the column to the Phelps story because it was such a great example of the Fake Outrage Machine that warps our political discourse and ultimately our public policy. In a country where about half the population has smoked pot and most people believe it should be legal in some form, we're expected to be ragingly angry that Phelps went to a party and hit his friend's bong. What a sad joke on so many levels.

David Sirota :: COLUMN: Our Addiction to Fake Outrage
At the public policy level, it's a joke that we can deify drinking in the way we do, but that marijuana is illegal - even for cancer patients. And it's not just illegal - there's a crackdown going on all over the country. Indeed, as public opinion becomes more tolerant of marijuana, arrests for marijuana possession are increasing in many parts of the country.

But the even bigger joke is that a story like Phelps' is considered "big news" and worthy of "outrage" in a nation dealing with an economic, health care and national security crisis. That this passes for a "major controversy" at a time like this really shows how sick our political and media system is. And the first step toward healing that system is to recognize that we're addicted to something - fake outrage - that is hurting us.

Read the whole column here.

The column relies on grassroots support - and because of that support, it is getting wider and wider circulation (a big thank you to all who have helped with that). So if you'd like to see my column regularly in your local paper, use this directory to find the contact info for your local editorial page editors. Get get in touch with them and point them to my Creators Syndicate site. Thanks, as always, for your ongoing readership and help contacting local editors. This column couldn't be what it is without your help.

ADDENDUM: Though my column delves into what a joke the Phelps "controversy" really is, nobody does it better than Saturday Night Live, whose Seth Meyers (a guy who I used to watch do improv as a fellow student at Northwestern) had related - though slightly different - point on the matter. Watch it here for a good laugh.

Octuplets Mom.  Let's all be outraged about that, shall we?

Distraction from the things we should actually be outraged about, nothing more.  (Monica Lewinsky, anyone remember?)

I don't know how to combat it, though -- tabloid shit sells.  Why?  Is it just easier to understand than Enron scandals and Wall Street bailouts?

Republicans can't fix our country; they're too busy saddlebacking.

Distractions is right -- and they come from everywhere/everyone -- not just (0.00 / 0)
the media or Republicans or the right alone.

distracting with fauxtrage -- like over bonuses and (toothless) regulations that get cut out of bills intentionally anyway -- while the real outrage is all the no-strings "bailout" trillions they all want to hand out, for instance, is an ongoing one enormously popular with the Pres and DC Dems.

Really.  And, really, I think people's outrage at others tends to say more about themselves than anyone else.

of course blogs are totally immune to the fake outrage disease (4.00 / 5)
i can't remember the last time I was outraged by something that turned out to be totally not outrageous

i just wish (4.00 / 1)
with phelps he stood up and said i smoke pot, im not sorry, its a natural plant that is safer than alcohal,
And if its bad how was i able to dominate?

whatever you think people owe you, that is what you owe people

he can't -- all his endorsement contracts have behavior/morals clauses -- (4.00 / 1)
they can all drop him in a flash if he is seen to be hurting their brand or does anything that hurts the very reasons they hired him to represent them (healthy, athlete, American "hero", clean-cut, etc).

it's many millions, and it's his income.

that's why he apologized publically immediately -- he knew it would cost him bigtime.

Phelps doesn't believe it's something to be defended.

It's entertainment to distract the people while the rich picked their pockets.

How's this for something genuinely outrageous (4.00 / 1)
It's all the Obamabot apologists on DKos falling all over themselves to defend his every move and explain that it's all some combination of his only being president for 3 weeks, pragmatism, and something about jiu-jitsu (or sometimes chess), and attacking anyone who dares criticize their Dear Leader. It's quite sickening. I mention Jeppesen, and the response is Ledbetter so Leave Britney Alone! It's simply stunning just how prevalent authoritarian hero worship cultism is on the left (and how ignorant so many self-imagined lefties are about politics). The right does not have a lock on that. And I find it quite outrageous, and depressing.

they think it helps him -- and us -- by defending things, that if Dubya did them (0.00 / 0)
would have caused enormous outrage in the past (and by vehemently attacking all who dare to point it out)

it hurts all of us, and perpetuates the bad -- and the unaccountable-ness of Presidents and parties and DC overall tho..

their outrage is real tho -- they've invested tons in Obama (far more than every other Democratic president and pol) and can't stand being proved suckers.

.... (4.00 / 1)
Yes, there is some excessive defense of our President on DailyKos, but most of the time it seems to be just typical disagreements between people.  Take the Rev Wright situation, I can understand why people were outraged that he was speaking, yet I can understand why some weren't.  Yet that is one of those cases where people were called "apologists" if they weren't against it.

It definitely goes both ways.

It's different here (0.00 / 0)
I'm not talking about ordinary disagreements about policy matters, e.g. being for education grants in the stimulus bill vs. being ok if they're put into the regular budget, or whether or not Obama will have broken his campaign pledge by staying in Iraq for 18 or 20 months compared to the 16 that he promised.

I'm talking about people who defend literally everything that Obama does no matter what the issue, and no matter how much it goes against what he promised during the campaign and supposedly stood for before running, or against progressive goals and values. E.g. FISA, Jeppesen, rendition, prosecuting Bushies, etc.

These defenses are absolute, strident and reflexible, and generally made using various incredibly stupid and offensive excuses that one might hear from a Bush-defending wingnut, e.g. he's only been in office X weeks, I trust him, he's a good guy, he's got a secret master plan to fix everything that we're too dumb to comprehend, look at all the good things that he's done, it's not him but burrowed Bushies who are doing this against his will or behind his back (because Obama doesn't read newspapers, being too busy saving the country and all), and so on. It's quite sickening and depressing, because it's inane and cultish and not what you'd expect on the left (well, maybe the Naderite left, but not the mainsteam left).

I'm thinking of starting to call him Barack Larouche.

Okay... (0.00 / 0)
the Larouche people are freakin' crazy, and you can't lump President Obama in with them.  That goes too far!

I can understand what you mean, there are some people that support him no matter what (for numerous reasons).

On a personal note, I worked for the campaign (70-110 hrs/week).  I can understand that initially people come off the campaign with a standard operating procedure of defending him, even if you might disagree, because it is your job and he cuts your checks.  I mean, I completely disagree with his position on civil unions (I believe that is segregation, it is a separate and unequal institution) yet I was obliged to defend him on that issue.  And it takes a little bit to get out of that routine.  But seriously, that excuse is done, it's been long enough to break that habit.

You are guilty of this nearly every time you post something.

I don't agree with Sirota on every single issue, but I find that he keeps a focus on "important" subjects.

I'm interested in hearing which subject he wrote about that you find to be "fake outrage?"

Here's a few... (0.00 / 0)
Harry Reid's Views on Race

The Unknown Aristocrat

MSNBC/Maddow: Stimulus - Sound Policy vs. D.C. "Bipartisanship"

The Untold Daschle Story: The Blacklisting of Progressive Economics

And there's plenty more over the past few years. Conspiracy theory garbage, lack of sources, ignores evidence that contradicts his opinion, but always always the outrage. And every single thing is the biggest outrage ever - every single thing is something worse than the last.

[ Parent ]
those are important issues.... (0.00 / 0)
The issues he talks about in those articles actually have consequences on people's lives, unlike Phelps hitting a bong.  That was the point of this diary, not that outrage should be abolished, but that there is a mass of outrage over issues that have no consequence on the lives of anyone which distract from real problems.

[ Parent ]
Nah (4.00 / 1)
Nah, those posts you point out are all substantive and on policy. You hate the substance - you can't deal with it, or you don't want to because it makes you feel uncomfortable, or makes you feel that what you believe is wrong. And so you attack the messenger - but that stuff is not "fake outrage." It's about very real stuff like the economy and our democracy. You may think those are trivial things, but you are in the minority.

[ Parent ]
No - I think it's trivial to write about conspiracy (4.00 / 1)
theories, or to be dishonest about your dislike of appointments because you used to WORK for the person who was in direct competition with the nominee you're railing against.

There may be important issues in those diaries, but they aren't treated as such by you because of your many biases and your inability to make an argument and dispute the evidence that disagrees with you instead of ignoring it.

There are plenty of good writers out there who are writing on the same topics - they just don't have the same bias problems you do.

And you accuse me of pushing conspiracy theories? Sheesh.

Outraged at Outrage (4.00 / 1)
All the pissing and moaning is really starting to piss me off! It just BURNS my short fuse when I read about how easily others are moved to anger!!! G*d*mit, why can't you all understand that MY outrage, and ONLY MY otrage is justified?!!  All the rest of you are just faking it, or lunatics. Get a real life, already and STFU ASAP!

On the other hand: maybe its time we reconsider. Perhaps "outrage" is a luxury we can no longer afford.
