Rush Limbaugh for President

In the LA Times today Michael McGough is pushing Rush Limbaugh for Congress. It would put Limbaugh, he argues, in a better position to help President Obama fail.

I think instead that Limbaugh should make a run for President in 2012. First, he's already the de facto head of the GOP as Rahm Emanuel pointed out yesterday.

This fact became even more clear in the last 24 hours. Yesterday RNC head Michael Steele said "No, I am the head of the party" and at the same time criticized Rush and his show. Today Steele is apologizing for those remarks. Limbaugh is easily the most popular figure among GOP voters. If Sarah Palin for VP was such a great idea based on how she fired up the base, increased donations, etc., Limbaugh should clearly be seen as manna from heaven. Imagine the contributions. And unlike Palin he is capable of speaking in complete sentences.

But as popular as he is among the far right, he is simultaneously the least popular media figure on the scene today.  A Gallup poll last month shows Independent voters against him 2-to-1 and a previous Gallup poll from 6 years ago is much the same. Another poll last fall showed Limbaugh less popular that Jeremiah Wright.

And check out this poll by Rasmussen two years ago showing Rush Limbaugh as, by far, having the highest unfavorables of the media personalities they polled.

Al Franken was among the first to capitalize on the deep well of animosity Americans have for Limbaugh. His 1999 book "Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot" spent 23 weeks on the best seller list and helped launched his career as a political commentator and, sometime soon, as a Senator. I think that book may have ultimately made it harder for Franken to be taken seriously as a candidate but, that issue aside, he clearly tapped into a reservoir of Rush hate.

A run by Rush would crystalize everything people already believe about the Republican party and virtually guarantee continued minority party status for the GOP. So I second McGough's call: Run Rush run! For President.

Don't tell the good Americans at RedState or Hotair. They just might believe you.

Draft Rush! (4.00 / 1)
Dear Rush Limbaugh,

We've listened to your garbage for 20 years.

If you really have the solutions to all of America's problems, then run for President and present your solutions so the American people can decide.

Otherwise stop blowing hot air and get yourself a real job - if you can find one in the Depression created by your President George Bush and your rightwing Republican Party.

Bottom line: Put up or shut up.

Franken (4.00 / 1)
Nothing about Franken's books makes it harder to take him seriously as a candidate. He's going to be Senator Wellstone II

re: Franken (4.00 / 1)
He's going to be more like Senator Mark Dayton II. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Politically, he's no heir of Wellstone. He's much closer to Dayton than Wellstone. Matter of fact, he may be even more centrist than Dayton.

Al Franken has a great sense of humor, but he can't use it anymore, and Al Franken without jokes is bland as Mark Dayton. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but...

I like Limbaugh where he is (4.00 / 1)
If he ran for the pres nomination, the other candidates would totally wipe the floor with him, and he'd retreat, sulking. Right now, he's much more useful as someone who's pissing into their tent.

Today, the storyline of Rush the GOP leader is catching on, and Rahm + Kaine are plugging it. If it sticks, the poor Republicans will need a Limbaugh exorcism before anyone votes for them again. The more embedded he is in the party, the harder it will be for them. If he runs for something, they will finally have cover to tee off on him.

Rush for Senate? (4.00 / 2)
Can you imagine if Rush ran and actually won a Senate seat? Not saying it would happen...but just imagine the floor debates, especially with (Senator) Franken.

I think I'd be much more inclined to watch C-SPAN 2.

No wait, it didn't work the first time. He'd find a way to dodge it.

Won't happen (0.00 / 0)
I doubt that Rush would want to give up his radio show to run for office.  He has more power as a media personality.  In congress, he'd just be a junior member.  It would be unsightly for the leadership to beg a first term member for forgiveness.

Cute idea (0.00 / 0)
Sure, there are reasons to indulge the idea of a progressive-backed, draft-Rush movement.  For one thing, he'd suck all the air out of the room (literally) during the primaries, and leave all the other nominees damaged.  And if he actually won the nomination, he would be toast.

But maybe the idea is a little too cute. Like, too clever by half.

What happens if something goes wrong (Democratic candidate drops dead, or gets caught with a live boy/dead girl, etc.) and the f***head actually wins?  "Seemed like the thing to do at the time" just wouldn't seem like justification enough.

Let's just focus our energies on the progressive agenda, and proving that it's good politics and good policy.  That will silence him with its sheer weight.

Love Him or Hate Him (0.00 / 0)
I despise Limbaugh, but I think it would be good to see him run.  I think it would bring a real difference in politics.  It might spur real change in government as apposed to the lie of change that Obama spewed (no lobbyist in his cabinet and yet has nominated at least 6 as an example).  Love him or hate him, someone has started the countdown: http://www.limbaughclock.com
