Making the Fed Tell Us Which Banks It Is Giving Our Money To

A few months ago, Florida Rep. Alan Grayson (D) asked a top Federal Reserve official to tell Congress which private banks the Fed was handing out taxpayer money to - and the Federal Reserve official categorically refused. Now, Congress may do something about that obscene secrecy, with Senate Bill 513:

WASHINGTON, March 3 - Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) today introduced legislation to demand disclosure of the financial institutions that have received more than $2.2 trillion in taxpayer-backed loans and other financial assistance from the Federal Reserve.

Sanders introduced the bill after the chairman of the Federal Reserve Board, in testimony before the Senate Budget Committee, refused to identify the banks.

At the hearing, Bernanke told Sanders that "hundreds and hundreds of banks" tapped the loan fund. "Can you tell us who they are?" Sanders pressed.  "No," Bernanke said, because it would be "counterproductive."

The fact that this even needs to be a bill is amazing, really. Our money is being spent, and the Fed won't even tell us - or Congress - who it is giving it to. The Sanders bill should be a no-brainer (even if it won't be because Congress is so bought by Big Money).

I'll give you a hint: (0.00 / 0)
The money is going to the company whose CEO was simultaneously the Treasury Secretary.

if the bank names were made public (0.00 / 0)
won't people loose confidence in them?

"....because Congress is so bought by Big Money" (0.00 / 0)
Your last sentence in parentheses is a sad but true state of affairs.

This bill will be a good test of it.

The fact that Obama is not nationalizing BoA and Citibank, as 90% of respected economists advise would help immensenly in speeding the recovery, makes me wonder if he and Geithner and Summers aren't bought by Big Money, too.  I want to be proven wrong, but...?
