Feingold-Reid Loses A Vote

Feingold-Reid just went down. A few months ago, this bill had 29 votes,. Today, it only garnered 28 votes. Here are the Democrats who voted against Feingold-Reid:

Baucus (D-MT), Bayh (D-IN), Bingaman (D-NM), Carper (D-DE), Casey (D-PA), Conrad (D-ND), Dorgan (D-ND), Johnson (D-SD), Landrieu (D-LA), Levin (D-MI), Lincoln (D-AR), McCaskill (D-MO), Mikulski (D-MD), Nelson (D-FL), Nelson (D-NE), Pryor (D-AR), Reed (D-RI), Salazar (D-CO), Tester (D-MT), Webb (D-VA)

All but five of these Senators also voted to condemn MoveOn earlier today. That makes a lot of sense, as not only do they not really want to end the war, they dislike those people who do want to end the war. And yes, that means you.

I see my Senators, Landrieu & Vitter, continue to prove what complete morons they are.

We're so proud.

Much more of this to come (4.00 / 2)
Apparently, it's Harry's new strategy (my piece) to run a loop of losing Iraq votes to prove to voters in Nov 08 that it's not been through want of Dem trying that the war hasn't been brought to an end.

Will the Dem Senate party last that long?

The good news from the House is that the Progs are still apparently standing behind their July 19 commitment: Lee of CA is talking about getting up to the 100 mark of signatories.

If anything can lift the tedium and generate some real action, it's the Progs following through.

God knows what'll happen after that!

What happened to Mikulski? (4.00 / 1)
I'm perplexed by her transformation.

I don't know (4.00 / 2)
I was discussing this with a local elected official today, a  progressive Dem. Mikulski's had a run of atrocious votes lately, which makes NO sense -- she's popular statewide (even in the red areas) and she's in one of the safest seats in the Senate.

She's at an age where any smear campaigns can just roll off her back. I am truly at a loss as to what her problem is.

But I've lost just about all of my respect for her. I'm casting around for primary opponents to her in 2010 (which is what my discussion this afternoon was sort of about).

Mikulski (0.00 / 0)
She's the only one with a "good " progressive punch rating to rat out on both bills.  The other 15 who voted wrong twice all rank in the bottom 20 or so.  Mikulski ranks 22nd best in the Senate.  Of course that's a lifetime number and may be sliding.  The way to check that is to look at her Loyalty Score (this session alone).  It should be about 5 points higher than the Progressive Punch score to just hold its own (as the majority of Democrats vote non-progressive around 5% of the time).  If Mikulski is under 95% she's sliding.

where was Cantwell? (4.00 / 1)
Murray did the right thing.  My other Senator was a no-show.  Anyone know why?

Cantwell missed all the votes I've seen today. (4.00 / 1)
I assume she is out of town or something.

Just Like Murray Was Absent On FISA! (0.00 / 0)
Apparently, they're now sharing the seat, and they're okay with one Senator representing the State at a time.

Vote changes (4.00 / 1)
Biden went from voting to invoke cloture to not voting;
Brown did the reverse.

Mikulski went from voting to invoke cloture to voting against cloture; Rockefeller did the reverse.

Loss of vote was from Cantwell, who went from invoking cloture to not voting.

When looking at the variations among those opposed to the war, I think that there are those who are opposed to the war but also opposed to a rapid withdrawal and that the optimal timetable for gathering support has a minimum of one year.

Webb and Tester are my biggest disappointments (4.00 / 1)
If I hear anyone mention Webb for VP I will throw up.

Seriously (4.00 / 1)
I love how they are idolized in the blogs just because we gave a bunch of money to them.  They vote worse than the average Democrat.

Even this one (0.00 / 0)
This blog goes all negative on Mark Warner before he even casts a vote, while propping up Tester and Webb as some sort of model when they ARE voting poorly.  It's totally rondo.

they are exactly what the netroots wanted (0.00 / 0)
Conservative democrats in districts that would normally be Republican.

They are better than whatever Republican would have gotten the spot.

The netroots was always about turning moderate republican states into conservative democratic states.  Edward's pretend shift to the left suddenly made their rhetoric all about being really really to the left despite any evidence at all of it.

WTF? (4.00 / 1)
from moderate republican to conservative democratic? how about at least to moderate democratic.

John McCain opposes the GI Bill.

Reed - our spokesperson. (0.00 / 0)
Is this Reed the same Reed that the democrats CHOSE TO REPRESENT THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY?

That should tell us something folks.

Nope. (0.00 / 0)
That's Jack Reed of Rhode Island.  Harry Reid was one of the sponsors of this bill.

[ Parent ]
No - It's Reed... (0.00 / 0)
Jack Reed of Rhode Island voted against Feingold-Reid.

This is the Senator that gave what was billed as "the Democratic response" to Bush's war speech the other night.

If the party picked Reed to be its' face, it is not a very good omen.

Excuse my language... (0.00 / 0)
but I *FUCKING* hate most of the Dems in DC. I have never seen such a bunch of whiny, wimpy, crybabies. And I worked in childcare for three years!

I would love to see progressive challengers to every incumbent Dem. But then, that might spread our resources too thin and take away our focus on those who are the worst of the bunch. Ugh.. why can't we have a better Party? Why can't Dem "leaders" actually read polls and realize that our position is the MAJORITY position?

What makes you think (0.00 / 0)
that progressives would somehow inherently not be whiny or wimpy?

John McCain opposes the GI Bill.

Even Tom Friedman has given up on ... (0.00 / 0)
...Friedman Units. But 23 Democrats who could have voted for Feingold-Reid today guaranteed that we will have another 2.5 Friedman Units. That translates into about 1200 American soldiers and tens of thousands of Iraqis into premature graves.
