Obama Accuses Clinton Of Having Long-Term Plan

Speaking of worrying about political dynasties in America, it appears Obama is actually trying to open up a line of attack similar to the dynastic one:

Barack Obama is starting to slip into his speeches a disputed account of a secret 20-year plan for both Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton to win the White House.

"I'm not in this race to fulfill some long-held plan or because it was owed to me," Obama told a gathering of Nevada Democrats after Thursday night's Las Vegas debate.

That was a veiled reference to an account by biographers Jeff Gerth and Don Van Natta that the Clintons sealed a "secret pact of ambition" to both win the presidency - which has been vehemently denied by Clinton advisers.

Asked if Obama was referring to the pact, a spokeswoman replied, "Barack Obama has not been mapping out his run for president from Washington for the last 20 years like some of his opponents."

Clinton spokesman Blake Zeff responded, "This is an odd statement, considering that the number of people who say Sen. Obama talked about running for president as a youngster seems to grow daily."

Several interesting things here. First, unlike most attacks against Hillary Clinton from Democrats in this primary campaign, this one actually does echo Republican lines of attack against her. It has been a long-term claim from conservatives that the Clinton's have had a plan in place to make Hillary Clinton President. Rush Limbaugh even once said that the Clinton's probably funded the swiftboaters in some way to make sure the Presidency was open for a Democrat in 2008.

Second, when asked if they were repeating the old charge, the Obama campaign repeated the attack when they were asked about it. So yeah, make no mistake, they really are accusing the Clinton's of having a 20-year plan to make Hillary President.

Third, even though they have denied it in the past, the Clinton campaign didn't seem to deny it here. In fact, they responded to a Republican style attack on Clinton from Obama by attacking Obama in Republican fashion. Weird.

Fourth, and finally, is it really a bad idea to have a lengthy plan to become President? This is the most difficult job in the country, with the most responsibility in the country. As such, it strikes me that it is probably a good idea to have a lengthy planning period before assuming the job. I'm pretty sure that all seven of the major Democratic candidates had been planning their runs for several years. I have no problem with that, either. This isn't the sort of thing one does off the cuff, nor should it be. You need to call in every connection you have made, be extremely familiar with every policy area, understand the political landscape as well as anyone in the country, and spend a long time prepping both your family and yourself. Hopefully, you will plan for a long-time before you run. Why, exactly, are we supposed to think it is a good thing that someone decided to run the country on a whim? Why is it a negative that Clinton has been preparing for this for twenty years? Is there something wrong with having a life plan, or dreaming of being President? If there is, I'm not sure what all of those career days in high school and  college were for.

it just makes the person sound nutty.  Even if it were true, it isn't illegal, immoral, unethical, or bad in any way.

Obama's going down for the third time here, methinks.

They say that like it's a bad thing ... (0.00 / 0)
... but I don't remember -- to hop across the pond -- rampant mockery of Michael Heseltine over the life plan he mapped out, in college, to get to Number 10. Or savaging of George W. Bush in 2000, when he had to have it in his mind to run for president back when his father first started getting mentioned for the White House. Or intimations about Mitt Romney, whose father reached commanding heights of political power; surely the thought of running for president crossed his mind before this year.

I want to believe this comes from something other than subconscious gender bias. Heck, it very well could come from a different place. No matter how you look at it, though, complaining about someone planning to attain the White House rings damned hollow -- because seriously, how else would one get there?

Everybody wants to grow up to be President (0.00 / 0)
Come on. Of course you have a plan.

We have a County Executive here who clearly has big plans. We have nearly a million people here in our County and this is a high-profile post and an obvious jumping off place for higher office. The guy spent one term in the House, jumped to the Senate, then ran mid-term for Exec. Won, just got reelected.

The only question around the Courthouse is whether his next step is the Senate or the Governor. But few doubt that he has his eye on the big prize, and he is young enough, smart enough, and good looking enough to pull it off. Will he end up President? Well of course nobody could know that. But there are plenty of people like him in State Legislatures and in the House, smart ambitious people who have a path to the top. A good part of this is driven by term limits, which in a lot of states have effectively established an up or out system, unless you want to just serve a couple of years for the experience, you are almost forced to run.

Few people not named Mike Gravel run for Presidency on a whim and coordinating political careers among family members is an American tradition. We could even call it the Long tradition.

This is just another application of Clinton Rules and Obama may come to regret it. Progressives may not be onboard Hillary's bandwagon but I think most recognize the fundamental unfairness at play here. Obama pretty much lost me with the Social Security flap, playing Clinton Rules may have sealed the deal. I expect Clinton to win, with or without my help, but Obama needs people like me to have a chance of pulling this out. Aiding and abetting an attack on the crown jewel of the New Deal and making up unfounded claims about a secret plan of succession is helping him here.

The first two offices were the State House of Reps and the State Senate, that may not have been clear.

And the last line should read "is NOT helping him here"

Man, what a dumb line of attack for Obama to pursue. His campaign has been one long series of strategic miscues.

Are we really supposed to believe that Hillary's master plan to ascend to the presidency consisted of marrying an Arkansas lawyer who would then become governor, then president. Then, from her perch as First Lady, Hillary would run for office, serve a term, and then run for the White House?

Yeah, that's a surefire, time-tested path to the Presidency.

and you choose to weigh in on this one????

Woman's rules? (4.00 / 1)
Maybe not just Clinton rules - maybe men are supposed to plan ahead, women scheme to get ahead.  Obama also added because she thought she deserved it - a rather more biting comment.  We are going to need psychologists soon to parse everything.  But it is getting to the point that I wish the primaries were done and we had a candidate because I hate these attacks among Democrats. I have forgotten all the acrimony of four years ago - or maybe was not online as much.

Another absurd tactic by Barack Obama.  Is that all he's got on Hillary - that she actually envisioned herself as running for President oneday?  How bright are Obama's strategists?  How bright is Obama?  He's starting to frighten me actually.
