Obama Slammed for Holding Up Von Spakovsky

Jane Hamsher is correct that this attack on Obama from the Politico is unfair.  The FEC cannot implement the provisions of legislation Obama pushed through because Obama (among others) placed a hold on Hans Von Spakovsky, a horrific pick to be a commissioner of the FEC.  Obama has been very good on voting rights, and it's ridiculous to hold him accountable for Bush's propensity to pick as regulators people who don't believe in the mission of the agency they are supposed to run.

The Politico is a joke rag (4.00 / 1)
Bush could simply nominate someone who hasn't been engaged in voter suppression to be a commissioner on the FEC and that would solve the problem. Obama isn't alone in blocking Von Spakovsky either. This was a team effort with Obama, Russ Feingold, Dianne Feinstein, John Kerry, Ben Cardin, and Sherrod Brown all working to ensure that the FEC is run only by those who believe in the fundamental democratic rights like voting rights. I think we can all agree that the right to vote is more important than a ruling on bundling disclosure. Politico is boo.

The Hans is a bad dude (4.00 / 1)
It is important to remember that von Spakovsky isn't just a partisan hack, he is a partisan hack who prefers to help his party (the GOP) by illegally attempting disenfrancize blacks, hispanics, women, poor and elderly people.

NCAAP and MALDEF (Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund) among dozens of other civil rights groups viggoriously opposed von Spakovsky's nomination.

At the DOJ, he had his hands on the approval of Tom DeLay's re-redisticting map that the US Supreme Court held violated the Voting Rights Act against Hispanics (and several justices believed violated that same law for blacks in another district).  He also pushed laws that would disenfrancize Hispanics in Arizona under the guise of "voter fraud". . . he pushed for the approval of a voter ID law in Georgia that a federal judge found to be "a modern day poll tax."

On the merits, von Spakovsky didn't deserve to be at the DOJ, let alone get a promotion to the FEC.  Kudos to Feingold, Obama, and Kerry (and others) for blocking this nomination.

Truth over balance, progress over ideology

So much for the myth (0.00 / 0)
that Obama is not a progressive, and possibly even a stealth Republican or DLCer. This doesn't exonerate his less positive actions, but it does show him to be a more complex politician than he's made out to be by some. Now if he could only be this guy more often...

And I say this about the other two candidates as well. So frustrating. I suppose that it's to be expected at a transitional time in which the right has not yet totally collapsed and the left has not yet fully come into its own. Many will understandably, if regretably, opt to be overcautious, just to be sure. Whoever can break out of this stasis deserves the nomination.

True (0.00 / 0)
I read someone repeating something that they heard from someone who heard something from someone they know who knows someone who might know that when he was in the kindergarden, Obama once shared a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with some kid who looked like Grover Norquist. Or perhaps it was Bin Laden. Apparently he had ambitions of being voted hall monitor. What a suckup.

I think that it's time to coin a new phrase: Obama Derangement Syndrome (ODS).

Otherwise known as '68 Disease.
