( - promoted by Chris Bowers)

Update from Tim Tagaris: Stoller calls in to tell me that they have two precincts in.  Montgomery County #521 which went 59% to 35% for Wynn last time, went 508 votes to 167 this votes this time around for Edwards.

Also, Prince Georges County 13-13 which went 60% to 38% in favor of Wynn last time, was 415 (Edwards) to 432 (Wynn) this time.

So, way early. But two precincts in with favorable results.

Update (Chris): 0504 Montgomery 371-161. In 2006 it went 280-161 for Edwards last time. Monto 1313: 2006 Edwards got 348-122. This time, 654-148. Mont Co 13-15: 489-94 in 2006. 694-92. Looking excellent.

Update (Tim): 6% in -- 55 to 41 Edwards.

Ok, this is a developping situation.  Polling places are intermittedly open and closed in Montgomery County, and election judges are refusing to follow the direction of the board of elections.  They are not willing to come in to a centralized location with their voting machine memory cards, because the roads are icy and they are tired and underpaid.  I don't know about Prince George's.

This is a messed up situation considering the serious problems in 2006.  Returns that we know of in Montgomery, which are Donna's base, are simply hugely advantageous for Donna.  The campaign is furious and negotiations are happening.  Last cycle there were substantial irregularities in Donna's base precincts, due to, you guessed it, undertrained and underpaid polling workers.  It's horrible out and people are very cold and tired.  Normally in a situation like this police would get the ballots and bring them to the board, but there aren't enough police because of the bad weather.

Lawyers are fighting.  This is a problem in 'only a handful of precincts', but the board of elections won't tell us which ones.  I don't mean to overdramatize this, it doesn't look as bad as it was last cycle considering that there really is a good reason for the problems (weather).

I'm guessing that Donna has probably won the race but we don't know right now and we may not know until tomorrow morning.

... The board of elections has alerted a judge about the possibility of a need for court intervention so that sheriffs would be ordered to go to the judges and secure the materials, both the machines and the memory cards.  Intuitively, the board is hoping that the threat of this action will get them to cease and desist their 'rebellion'.

It's just silly.

what a mess (0.00 / 0)
if the weather is anywhere near as bad as it is up here in NYC, it surely must be awful down there. i sure hope this stuff gets sorted soon.

It's time:the albany project.

The weather IS awful here today (0.00 / 0)
Sleet, snow, and freezing rain in Frederick County. I saw a really hideous accident this morning on my way to work -- a flipped-over pickup truck just south of the Point of Rocks bridge -- and it took me about twice as long as it usually does to get home, during which time I witnessed a couple of near-spinouts. I was worried I wouldn't make it home in time to vote, though that turned out not to be an issue. I can't say I blame the pollworkers for not hitting the road, but one can fault the board of elections for not having a Plan B...

lots of eager folks fingers crossed for Donna!

Awful whether throughout the day (0.00 / 0)
The polls were really busy this morning. I was planning on going to the Edwards election night party, but the roads are in pretty bad shape now, and as the temperature lowers it's only gonna get worse. Looks like it's gonna be a late night waiting for results...

informal report from Mimi Kennedy at St Bernadines Church (0.00 / 0)
I am from LA but just got a call from Mimi Kennedy who was in MD-04 working for the Edwards Campaign and said that at the polling place she is at the election judge she saw had called in her results, to what she referred to as an accumulator.  They had three Diebold Machines with memory cards which Mimi assumed would be brought to one location to verify the called in results.

Are the numbers we are getting in the called in numbers or the ones on the memory cards?

This may be some type of protection of the results.

Unprepared (4.00 / 2)
It's shameful that the elections board is unprepared for this eventuality.  I mean, it's the middle of February.  Did they just think it would be balmy and hope for the best?

Poll workers are the heroes of our civic world -- of course they are tired and cold and underpaid.  Send the police out in snowplows and 4x4s to get the results, and have them carry the poll workers home (or to a pub) as well.

That freaks me out (0.00 / 0)
I want to be hopefully about the current results but I'm so damn freaked about the problems.

Hope everything is going well on the ground.

but all these outside factors don't sound too good. Hopefully the numbers stay right where they are.
