Special Election Candidate Bill Foster Comes Out on FISA

I got a response from Bill Foster's campaign on my FISA question, and he's pretty unequivocal.

"The President and his allies in Congress are playing politics with national security, and that's wrong.  Nobody is above the law and telecom companies who engaged in illegal surveillance should be held accountable, not given retroactive immunity.  I flatly oppose giving these companies an out for cooperating with Alberto Gonzalez on short-circuiting the FISA courts and the rule of law."

Bill Foster, Democratic Candidate in IL-14 March 8th Special Election

I criticized Foster on his attraction to the Blue Dogs as fiscally responsible (and this statement on the beauty of bipartisanship), but I was quite open-minded about his candidacy.  He's running on Iraq, as a Democrat, Scientist, and Businessman, and he's against immunity for telecom companies.  I hope he doesn't become a Blue Dog, but overall I'm pretty happy that he's got a shot and if you're in the area you should volunteer and help out his campaign.  At the very least he'll be another good vote on FISA, and he might be pretty progressive in Congress.  I mean he's a scientist.

Go Foster.

He'll be OK (0.00 / 0)
I think Foster would make a decent congressperson. He's pretty conservative on deficits and has too much faith in the ability of business to improve society, but he's rational, strongly supportive of individual rights and liberties, and aware of the need for big reform in elections, contracting, and related issues. As a physicist, he'd be a much-needed voice in rebuilding the science policy disaster Bush will leave hehind. Plus, he's running against a rightwing nut of the worst kind. Oberweiss has not won an election yet despite spending tons of his own money, but this is a very red district.

I think Foster has a chance, but he'll need a lot of help. A race worth targeting, IMO.

and.... (0.00 / 0)
He's one of the few I've seen who has DEMOCRAT on his web site.

Decent framing, too (0.00 / 0)
Connecting Abu Gonzales with the FISA issue. Not bad at all.

Global Warming (0.00 / 0)
Given that global warming must be attended to soon, and that there are slow-moving members of Congress, every credible scientist we can add to that institution will be an advantage.

(FD I've worked with Foster on physics projects in the past, though I never discussed politics with him.)
