James Taranto in the Wall Street Journal criticized me today for supposing that McCain's speech in Mississippi was a racist dogwhistle. He might be right, I might be wrong. And perhaps John McCain's vote against making Martin Luther King Jr. Day a holiday was not so much a racist pander as a pander to those who hate holidays.
Anything's possible. Oh, and yes, above is an amusingly coincidental picture of a black guy holding an umbrella for McCain as he gives a speech apologizing for his vote against a holiday honoring MLK. The video of McCain being heckled is worth watching. Apparently the American public doesn't have a mancrush on John McCain.
No word yet on whether they love his maverick streak.
