The Future of Compassionate Conservatism--Assassination Jokes

Mike Huckabee won a lot of respect--along with anger from from some of the folks you want to see angry--for supposedly presenting a new direction for the Christian Right... a more Christian direction, in fact, with concern for the economically left behind.  Indeed, there's always been substantial sentiment in this direction amongst the rank and file.  But he never did figure out how he'd pay for it--it's soooo hard to choose amongst the favored GOP tax scams.

Now, however, the other shoe drops, as he jokes about Barack Obama being assasinated.

DISGUSTING: Mike Huckabee Jokes About Obama Being Shot

Fri May 16, 2008 at 11:51:26 AM PDT

Don't know quite what to think about this one. CNN is reporting that while speaking at the NRA this morning, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee responded to a loud noise offstage by making a joke about Barack Obama trying to evade a gunman.

I shit thee not.

The relevant quote, according to CNN:

"That was Barack Obama, he just tripped off a chair, he's getting ready to speak," said the former Arkansas governor, to audience laughter. "Somebody aimed a gun at him and he dove for the floor."

Ironically, I am showing "Ghosts of Mississippi" right now to my US History and Government classes.

Jokes about black political leaders avoiding gunfire, from a southern governor. I usually have a pretty good sense of humor, but I don't get it.

They have absolutely no sense of shame. None.

Keep in mind, this is the very best they've got.  This is as good as it gets from the so-called "Christian Right."

I will give him credit for this. (4.00 / 1)
He was one of the few people to actually stand up for Obama when the Rev. Wright thing blew up and he actually made a lot more sense then... say... Jerome Armstrong.

Having said that. He is still a Republican, and while i'd prefer Huckabee to Dobson that ain't saying much.

That's Just It (0.00 / 0)
Huckabee's the perfect example of the sort "responsible Republican leader" that post-partisan Barack Obama might want to work with.

So what's a little assassination joke among friends?

You seriously need to remove that bug up your butt. It's not healthy.

The remark is disgusting of course, but I have mixed feelings about publicly complaining about it so loudly, which will attract more attention to it. A quick denounce and reject is in order, then we should move on, IMHO.

What's You're Reasoning Here? (4.00 / 1)
I got your opinion, but not the rationale behind it.

How is it unhealthy to point out how sick they are?

How else are we to return the body politic to a state of health without identifying, understanding, and dealing with the sicknesses that beset it?

"Economically left behind"? (0.00 / 0)
Paul,

Usually, you provide comments that provoke thoughtful consideration of issues of import.  You don't conflate issues, and you don't 'unnecessarily' pander to sensationalize the ordinary.  But, this time, you violated all of these.

There is no doubt that Huckabee crossed a line, and I hope the backlash SPANKS him like he has never been spanked before.  I also hope that the residual bleeds over to affect Sen. McCain and raises questions about the legitimacy of his positions and beliefs.

Aside from all of that..., Paul, you need to bemore honest and forthright with your questions and comments.  I don't expect much honesty from politicians (republicans and democrats), but I do expect directness and a genuinely honest discourse from [this] blog.

Have You No Sense of Humor? (0.00 / 0)
At long last, have you no sense of humor, sir?

As it is written in my sig line of yore:

NO.  This is no joking matter.  YOU should think about that...for just a moment.

Apparently, all you understand is yucks.

OK where do we go to make jokes... (0.00 / 0)
...about blowing Mike Huckabee's head off? About warning Mike Huckabee not to come to Illinois because we have plenty of gun owners here who might want to kill him? C'mon I wanna know. I know plenty of deer hunters in the Land of Lincoln who can put
a buck's eye out at a hundred yards, a fat slob like him would be a piece of cake.

Don't Even Joke About Joking About It (0.00 / 0)
He blows his own head off quite nicely by his own self.

Let's not get down in the gutter with him.

Paul I know plenty of hunters... (0.00 / 0)
...who don't think firearms and hunting are a Republican or an NRA issue. Seriously they're pissed about the loss of habitat and people who use responsible gun owners like them as a terror tactic against Dem politicians. I'd like to know an email address where they can contact Huckabee and any other asshole who uses this kind of talk to tell them no more. Not this time, never again.

If this clown or any other Fifi LaPierre loving jerk wants to make "jokes" like this I'm more than willing to round up enough gunowners who with "jokes" will force him to rent thousands of dollars of metal detectors and pat down security agents wherever they make speeches to convince them that the subject of killing the Dem candidate isn't a laughing matter but is actually financial suicide for an ex-presidential candidate with no job.

If they think threatening Obama's life is fair game it's about time they learned differently.

Respond and it gets amplified (0.00 / 0)
We can't let the right dictate the topic of conversation.  It's the economy, the handling of the war, and McCain's flipflopping.  Stick to that and we win.  Forget Huckabee, he's already a loser.

[ Parent ]
Except.,.. (0.00 / 0)
McCain should be forced to answer for Huckabee.

More of the scrumscious flip-flop potential there.

That's not letting them dictate the topic.  So long as the topic is their bad behavior, it just feeds the erosion of their brand.  And, of course, ties McCain to it ever more tightly.

I never trusted this guy from the start- he's a far right racist whack job.

See CNN- Huckabee apologized (0.00 / 0)
Let's drop it- nothing to be gained from carrying on with it further.  It was obviously a dumb and insensitive statement.  Even the NRA audience was pretty quiet after he said it.

[ Parent ]
Depends on the version you hear (0.00 / 0)
I've seen a clip where the reaction was muted and a clip where the reaction was loud laughter by the crowd. I have no idea which was edited.

It's good to see he was forced to apologize quickly. I have no doubt it was because of outrage, not tut, tut murmurs of disapproval, from the left. If any nut shoots at Obama it'll be open season on Republican politicians. That's a prediction, not a threat.
