State Bloggers Protest Credentialling Decision

Marc Ambinder picked up a letter from 21 progressive state bloggers frustrated with the selection process.  I wrote about this on Sunday and Monday, pointing to the credentialing of a state party friendly blog in Michigan over one that has higher levels of influence and accomplishment but had been critical of the state party.  It now appears that the blogger given credentials works for the Governor of the state, though I can't confirm that since she won't return my email (I have put the question to her in her comment thread).

The issue here is simple, and doesn't have to do with any specific bloggers given or not given credentials.  State parties are clearly using blog credentials to reward bloggers they think support them best.  In some cases, in most actually, they are willing to reward critics.  In some states, though, particularly New Jersey and New York, it's possible that the decision cut out progressive activists because they are willing to speak out about problems within the party.  Leaving progressive bloggers out of the convention is a financial and political penalty for these small businesses, many of which will now shy away from being independent and progressive out of fear of retribution.

This is a problem.

Update:  Ok, apparently it's common knowledge that Cathleen Carrigan is an employee of Governor Granholm.  That is absurd.  Simply absurd.  An employee of the most powerful politician in the state was given convention credentials over a larger progressive blog.  This is just ridiculous.  Granholm can get her employees credentials, she doesn't need to take them from independent progressive activists.

Update again:  Carrigan is not an employee of Granholm, but is an employee of the Michigan Democratic Party.  This is a distinction without a difference.  I do find it frustrating that Carrigan refuses to answer my questions and then mewls on about being persecuted and misrepresented.  I am perfectly willing to issue corrections and sought her response before printing anything about her employment status.

I signed the letter (0.00 / 0)
as an editor at Calitics.  There is a serious issue of transparency here.  I have no clue if the party chairs had a say in this process.

However, one thing is for sure, given the choice between a long-standing quality partisan community blog they should be been chosen over the non-partisan corporate owned blogs.

Again i ask (0.00 / 0)
why is there seemingly ONE and ONLY ONE fucking credential per state?

Michael Bloomberg, prince of corporate welfare

Well, you know (0.00 / 0)
The Pepsi center only seats 21,000 people, it's not like they can just hand out tickets willy-nilly

Matt,

Check out the Michigan blogosphere, the ones who should care who from Michigan is credentialed, no one is pissed at that. I do think there are some really strong cases to be made for other states. BlueJersey for instance got the short end of the stick. Many of us who have been reading Michigan blogs for a while think there is nothing wrong with Carrigan getting the credentials.

Thanks. (4.00 / 1)
Even the bloggers from Michigan Liberal believe that Carrigan has earned her credentials.

I think that most state parties took the DNCC's request that they select the most deserving blog seriously.  A few decided to black ball people for whatever reason, or to select on politics rather than on merit.

She's not an employee of Granholm (4.00 / 2)
Her employment is disclosed on the BFM About page.

That's Enough, Matt! (4.00 / 1)
Yesterday you dragged the name of a well-known, highly respected Michigan blogger through the mud so badly that even the bloggers on Michigan Liberal came on here to defend her.

Like it or not, you're attacking a liberal blogger based on nothing more than a theory!  And you've done it in such a way that the people you're supposedly sticking up for on Michigan Liberal have come to her defense and told you repeatedly that she EARNED it!

If any of us ever leave political activism it won't be because of the other side.  It's be because of the people who are supposedly on our side.

Seriously, Matt... (0.00 / 0)
I'm normally a big fan of yours, but attacking one of your own based on assumptions is beyond wrong.  If I get banned for saying so, it's a shame, but so be it.

You should stop talking about the great BFM-MDP relationship conspiracy in Michigan, as it makes you look like quite the fool.

By the way, am I the only one struck with the irony that Stoller is accusing us of using relationships with the MDP to unfairly get credentials, while one of the front page editors of Michigan Liberal has said that the MDP is working behind the scenes to get credentials for Michigan Liberal, due to the fact that they didn't get credentials through the application process?
