VA-11 Primary: Gerald Connolly Caught Lying About Defense Contractor Cash

I've blogged before about Gerry Connolly, the pro-corporate developer backed Democrat running as a progressive 'antiwar' candidate in Virginia.  He's the guy who worked at a defense contractor before his run for Congress, who said the following a few weeks ago.

Connolly (D) had nothing to do with SAIC's more controversial contracts. He has worked at SAIC only since 2002 and leads the company's involvement in community activities and charitable events.

And the company spokesperson said the following.

SAIC spokeswoman Melissa Koskovich, when asked to respond to Connolly's critique of no-bid contracts, said in a statement: "Gerry Connolly works as part of SAIC's community relations team. In this role, he is not involved in SAIC's work for government or commercial clients."

Today, Amy Gardner of the Washington Post reports.

In an e-mail this month to "fellow SAIC teammates," Robert A. Rosenberg, a former executive vice president and general manager for SAIC's Northern Virginia operations whom the company calls a "consulting employee," urged colleagues to support Connolly in part because of his "in-depth understanding of our industry."

According to former FEC lawyer Allison Hayward, the email "focuses on Connolly's knowledge of the contracting business and what he could do for SAIC if elected to Congress", which makes it legally questionable.

Regardless of the legality, it's certainly dishonest of Connolly.  He claims that he leads the community activities and charitable events part of SAIC, but SAIC's own executive in a plea for cash for Connolly contradicts that.

Have I mentioned that progressive Democrat Leslie Byrne is running neck and neck with Connolly for the Democratic primary on June 10th?  Oh, I haven't?  Well she is.

Bryne is a great, progressive Democrat (4.00 / 1)
Connolly is a horrible, corrupt, corporate Democrat.

This is another very important opportunity but Connolly is outspending Bryne 2-1. We should do a fundraising push for Bryne as well as it's probably a more winnable race.

Yes to a Byrne fundraiser (4.00 / 1)
We should start it as soon as the Fallon one is over.  Here is a chance to support a progressive woman candidate with a track record of winning, against a regressive representative of the kleptocratic problems that undermined the GOP.  Why would we want someone like Connally representing our party?  Go for Byrne, and then after the primary Judy Feder and Tom Perriello.  Turn VA blue.

John McCain--He's not who you think he is.

Hell (0.00 / 0)
why not start now.

I think you can change the names of ActBlue pages. Change it to OpenLeft for Better Democrats. Make a big push to get to 10k or something like that.

We could make it.

Let's do it then. (4.00 / 1)
I'm in for 50 at the start of next week.

Voters Need To Get Excited (0.00 / 0)
I think if the message gets out that Byrne is the candidate of change, she wins.  Unfortunately, I don't think that is happening yet.  Byrne was in Congress for one term in the early 1990's -- she is not a "new" face.  Doug Denneney is a new face, running an agressive campaign, trying to make a name for himself -- that divides the change vote though he probably won't get beyond the 10% range. Connolly is the establishment candidate.  The Washington Post will probably endorse him on the grounds that he can bring home the bacon in a district that lives for federal pork. The Post is very important and give voters who need it "permission" to vote for change.  They want to be on the winning side.

Turnout will be low.  If it is higher than expected that is good for Byrne, she needs marginal voters who get motivated for change.  Connolly wins if the voting pool is limited to relible voters who always vote -- they have elected him many, many times in local elections.  Unless something big happens, probably more than the Post story today, my bet in on Connolly BUT if the dynamic of the race changes and Connolly gets tagged as an old Democrat controlled by lobbyists and especially developers, watch out.  This race can be won by Byrne if voters get interested.  Let's hope they don't get a case of fatigue, a problem given Virginia's endless primaries, special elections, off-year elections and frequent local elections.
