He was 58.  This is always a terrible time for family and friends, and my sympathy goes out to them.

A WNYer who did well (4.00 / 3)
Tragic stuff. Clearly, we all need to take care of ourselves.

Leaving aside any issues I had with his professional style for now, I always like that he was an example of a Western New Yorker who had done well. I also enjoyed his interviews more than those of the other Sunday shows, although if I was up and watching TV I would usually turn to ABC for the panel discussion.

Go Bills. Win one for Tim next year.

He was always quite fair I thought. MTP won't be the same.

Terrible tragedy, thoughts and prayers to family (0.00 / 0)
He loved following this race intensely.  Incredibly sad event, died way too young.

death is always such a shock

Wow, this is awful news. (4.00 / 1)
The election won't be the same without him.

My prayers are with his family.

John McCain.  Wrong for America.

He had a certain authority (4.00 / 2)
Kind of in the way you know it's a big name if John Madden was announcing you knew it was a big event when Russert's big bumpy mug was on the TV.

He was better than some.

How long till we can start talking about possible replacements?

Andrea Mitchell was is stand-in but wasn't very good (0.00 / 0)
Probably best to leave that until another day though.

''I've known Tim Russert since I first spoke at the convention in 2004. He's somebody who over time I came to consider not only a journalist but a friend. There wasn't a better interviewer in television, not a more thoughtful analyst of our politics and he was also one of the finest men I knew, somebody who cared about America, cared about the issues, cared about family. I am grief-stricken with the loss and my thoughts and prayers go out to his family and I hope that even though Tim is irreplaceable that the standard that he set in his professional life and with his family life are standards that we all carry with us in our own lives.''

Remembered at his best (0.00 / 0)
Reading this reminds me of a segment on MSNBC recently where Russert's enthusiasm (sometimes misdirected in my view) was on display in a very admirable form.  He was talking effusively about the possibility of having a truly substantive debate in the general election, and how it would benefit the country and our democracy.  That's how I plan to remember him--when his enthusiasm was combined with the idealism that probably was a big factor in his passion for politics.

Condolences to his family and friends.  If there's an afterlife, I expect that this election season will find him sitting around with my Dad, who died about a year ago, and who was also a longtime political junkie with a strong idealistic streak mixed with a love of debate and political strategy.

And I hope the vision Tim seemed to grasp in that televised exchange a few weeks ago comes to pass.  It would no doubt please him, my Dad and, most importantly, will help the millions of us still here on planet earth, trying to pull our country and the world out of the hole we're in.  And, if its possible, we could use a little help from "the other side"...so if anyone's listening....

"I am very saddened by Tim Russert's sudden death. Cindy and I extend our thoughts and prayers to the Russert family as they cope with this shocking loss and remember the life and legacy of a loving father, husband and the preeminent political journalist of his generation. He was truly a great American who loved his family, his friends, his Buffalo Bills, and everything about politics and America. He was just a terrific guy. I was proud to call him a friend, and in the coming days, we will pay tribute to a life whose contributions to us all will long endure."

A voice of sanity goes silent (0.00 / 0)
One of the few, universally admired tv journalists leaves us and the level of political discourse in this country will be just a little bit worse for now on.
