Senator Jim Bunning: "Little Green Doctors Are Pounding at My Back"

So sometimes in the background I put on audio snippets, music, conversations, whatnot.  Last week, I was listening to Senator Jim Bunning's conference call with reporters from his website, and I suddenly heard this crazy rant.  A reporter asked him if he would be at Fancy Farm, which is a large and raucus political festival in Kentucky, and he complained about security.  Here's what the reporter wrote.

Bunning said Tuesday that he might never again attend the annual political event at the Saint Jerome Catholic parish picnic in Fancy Farm, which signals the traditional start of the fall campaign in Kentucky.

The Fort Thomas Republican told reporters during his weekly teleconference that the event, scheduled for Aug. 4, is totally out of control...

But Bunning complained about a lack of security and heckling endured by politicians, echoing concerns he voiced during his 2004 re-election campaign against Democrat Daniel Mongiardo.

Bunning's campaign accused Mongiardo of sending supporters carrying video cameras to provoke a reaction from the senator.

Now listen to what he actually said on the call.

I'm sure there's an explanation.

UPDATE:  This is generally what Bunning was talking about.

Bunning recalled that while trying to give an interview to a Bowling Green TV station, he and his wife, Mary, were roughed up by people dressed as doctors. His opponent in that race - state Sen. Dan Mongiardo - is a physician.

"I had little green doctors pounding on my back," Bunning said. "It is not a question of being safe. I can defend myself.

Uhh.... (0.00 / 0)
that certainly is a... uh... position Jim has been in.

2004 we were not prepared (0.00 / 0)
MoveOn, etc. tried to win this race.  By 2006, we would have succeeded.  It really is a shame.

New Jersey politics at Blue Jersey.

we were not prepared, and we still almost won! (0.00 / 0)
if the DSCC had dropped even a little more money in earlier on, Bunning would not even be an issue, and KY's future Lt. Gov. would be the Sitting Senator.

Little green doctors... (0.00 / 0)
Were they Martians?

I honestly don't know what to make of the comment.

Sounds like someone ate the brown acid. (0.00 / 0)
I heard it was sending some Fancy Fest attendees on real heavy trips.

Back with the Phillies... (0.00 / 0)
I'm reminded of Lyndon Johnson's put down of Gerald Ford, when Ford was in Congress, that he "played too much football without a helmut on".  LBJ was referring to a picture of Ford that showed him playing for Michigan back in the era when football helmuts were made of leather and were soft with just a little padding.

Did Bunning get many baseballs thrown at his head back in the day when he piched with the Phillies or Twins?

It's been clear (0.00 / 0)
for some time that Bunning battles schizophrenia or something like it. The political and journalistic establishment is covering for him the way they covered for Strom Thurmond, who used to be seen wandering around Capitol Hill muttering to himself with nary a peep from the media.

It's Senility. (0.00 / 0)
plain and simple.
And no, that's not meant as a dis, that's a statement of fact.
The rumors have been floating around for years, hell... we could have won this race with Dr. Dan in 2004 if we had the money.

Someone (0.00 / 0)
needs to check the punchbowl at these Fancy Farms shindigs.  I get the feeling they're being supplied by the Owl Farm.

Wow (0.00 / 0)
Even if there were little green doctors pounding on his back, I think he needs to be careful how he phrases that in order to avoid, well, looking entirely out of it, as he does here. Especially given his senile image.

By the way (0.00 / 0)
This isn't funny. Or, it's both funny and sad. The man is sick and needs help.

In context, it does make some sense, (0.00 / 0)
but still . . . hilarious.  Just hilarious.

Remember his campaign? (0.00 / 0)
From Wikpedia:

"During his reelection bid in 2004, controversy erupted when Bunning described Mongiardo as looking "like one of Saddam Hussein's sons." Public distaste compelled him to apologize. Other behavior, including accusing Mongiardo of physically assaulting Bunning's wife - claiming that his wife was left "black and blue" - and the revelation that Bunning relied on a teleprompter during a TV debate caused several media analysts to question Bunning's mental state. Bunning set unprecedented conditions on the debate: he could not appear in person due to an important vote held just few hours before the debate and instead was televised from the Republican national headquarters; he refused to allow an independent observer in the room with him; he insisted that no portion of any recording of his performance could be rebroadcast; he insisted that the debate be broadcast live in the afternoon instead of the customary prime time hours; and other conditions."
