Why Better Democrats Rock: Jeff Merkley Edition

This is great.

"We disagreed on FISA," Merkley said when asked how he differed with Barack Obama. "And I think we have an emerging difference on NAFTA, where I am very concerned about jobs being swept out of the United States by these trade treaties combined with tax policies, and I gather we were closely aligned but as we go to the general election here, we find that Barack is changing a little bit."

This kind of pressure from strong Democratic leaders makes a real difference.  Imagine not just one Russ Feingold in the Senate, but five or six.  A lot of people misunderstand the nature of criticism of political leadership.  Every decision made to throw progressives under the bus came because a progressive lost a fight in a meeting within the campaign; pressure and criticism helps empower those progressives within so those meetings go differently.  And with Senators like Merkley unafraid to be public about those criticisms, we have a much better shot at enacting progressive policies.

These kinds of criticisms of Democrats push in the right direction.  Check this out.

But the majority of Merkley's interview with the Huffngton Post this past weekend was spent pinpointing areas in need of political improvement, even calling to task the Democratic-controlled Senate for not showing the requisite backbone.

"A major mistake has been not to force the Republicans to filibuster day and night on these issues," he said. "The public does not see that obstruction because they don't see on their televisions a senator on the floor of the senate going through the night reading out of a thick tomb of law, if you will, in order to block bills from being considered. We have to put that on show to the American public and show that it's unacceptable... And I am [prepared to start standing up]. FISA is a good example right there. I was proud of Senator Dodd and others for what they did. They lost the vote, but I'm proud of them."

Hell yeah!  That is what it means to be a Better Democrat.  That is what demonstrating independence means, not kowtowing to Beltway wisdom and voting with the Republicans in a kabuki-esque repudiation of party leadership but representing the mainstream of American public opinion, who are mad at the Beltway itself.  This pushes everyone to the left, adds support for Feingold and Dodd, and puts pressure on the centrist factions in the Senate that want to 'get something done' at the expense of our freedoms.

I'm proud of Merkley.  I can't wait for him to be in the Senate.

You can give to Better Democrats here, and he'll know it's from people happy with his aggressive and bold flouting of conventional wisdom.  You can also visit his website if you live in Oregon and sign up to volunteer.

Oh yeah.  More like this please.

Loved this article Matt. Its perfect on progressives, on standing firm (4.00 / 7)
on building coalitions, on being the first one to stand up and like Merkley, on being the next one. Obama is good. lets help him get better, by volunteering for Merkley, donating to Merkley and by being ready to stand up.

We have a country and a world to save. It'll be tough, we have to start now and little steps help a lot, but we can't do it by accepting half measures and non-solutions and conventional wisdom.

"We must break up the banks and never again let them get so big that they distort our politics and take down the economy.

Merkley has really impressed me (4.00 / 4)
He really makes an effort to talk about working people and how this economy and the policies we have need to work for them if this country is going to live up to its potential. Not everyone is going to get a master's degree and work in middle management or in an IT job. I think outsourcing has shown that. So the myth that we're all going to have high-tech 'new economy' jobs is just bunk. Even if we get rid of all our manufacturing base (a terrible thing should it occur), then there's still all those low-paying service sector jobs that are needed to make our economy work. I.e. bus drivers, supermarket workers, janitors, etc. If they can't join the middle class by making a decent wage, then all of us suffer. Jeff gets this and understands that it's that much harder to have a thriving middle class if we ship all our production overseas. That's why he's so skeptical of NAFTA-type deals.

Good for Jeff. Let's get him elected.

Wonderful....this is standing upright politics (4.00 / 4)
Do you know who to contact at the campaign to find out is he's coming east to raise money.  I would love to help.

Merkley's great (4.00 / 4)
and best of all he's going to be a leader in the Senate. Possibly Majority Leader someday.

John McCain: Beacuse lobbyists should have more power

As House Speaker... (4.00 / 2)
he's been an amazing progressive leader. He led a band of progressive Dems and engineered a takeover of the House and helped end 16 years of Republican rule. As House Speaker, he pushed through payday lending regulation, ethics reform, the card check, forced insurance companies to cover contraceptives, domestic partnerships, anti-discrimination legislation, the rainy day fund and a ton of enviro bills.

We not only need Dems with a strong spine in the Senate, we also need Dems who are skilled progressive legislators.

In the tradition of having a spine (4.00 / 2)
and following John Edwards' message.

Merkley is (4.00 / 2)
excellent.  He and Darcy Burner are great examples of BETTER Democrats, and each will replace a Republican.

I guess it's that "honesty" thing that Edwards (4.00 / 2)
talked about that a majority of Americans are looking for.
There is so little of it anymore.  For me the definition of eloquence is taking a seemingly complicated issue and communicating it simply and in a straightforward manner.  No flourishes.  No marketing gimmicks.  No slogans.  No meaningless framing.  You know, that "Four score...and of,by and for the people" stuff.  It used to called "telling it like it is"  or "make it plain".  Short and sweet.

That and... (4.00 / 2)
Merkley did it without resorting to gratuitous name-calling.

This is precisely the kind of principled-yet-respectful rhetoric that I so admire about Merkley. He registers disagreement in no uncertain terms without burning bridges.

Having a backbone does NOT require profanity or insults.
