Update on our Better Dems

Next week we will be adding 3-4 names to our Better Democrats list at Act Blue, so watch this space.  Here's an update on our current candidates, including the district, Cook PVI and Cook Report rating for each race.

Darcy Burner, WA-08, PVI D+2, Toss up. Darcy had a stellar Q2 in fundraising, outraising Dave Reichert and coming in fifth in the Swing State Project power rankings, with 136% of the cash that Reichert has.  In addition, following the tragic loss of her house in a fire, enough was raised to give her a needed break.  She is back on the trail.

Sam Bennett, PA-15, PVI D+2, R favored.  Sam Bennett, like all of our Better Dems, had a good fundraising quarter, coming within a hair of her incumbent opponent's total and leaping 25 spots in the Swing State power rankings.  She now has 52% of her opponent's CoH (solid for a Dem) and has been added to the DCCC's "emerging races" list.

Debbie Cook, CA-46 PVI R+6, Likely R.   One of our new additions, Huntington Beach mayor, environmental lawyer and energy expert Debbie Cook was a hit at Netroots Nation.  She outraised opponent Dana Rohrabacher for the second straight quarter.  Although the 20-year veteran of Congress has a big lead in CoH, Debbie is closing the gap in a year when GOPers are finding fundraising challenging at best.  She also has a big lead in enthusiasm.

Eric Massa, NY-29 PVI R+5, Toss up.  Eric Massa clocked in at #10 in the Swing State power ratings, our second Better Dem with more CoH (105%)than his incumbent opponent.  In what looks to be a very blue year in New York State, Eric continues to vigorously challenge Randy Kuhl in this upstate district.  He was unable to come to Netroots Nation this year because of a meeting with labor leaders, but sent his thanks for netroots support.

Tom Perriello, VA-05 PVI R+6, Likely R.  Tom Perriello also had an extremely competitive quarter in his bid to unseat turncoat Virgil Goode, and his CoH stands at 62%, very good for a first-time challenger.  He continues to build support, hitting Goode on the housing issue, and has been added to the DCCC emerging races list.

Dennis Shulman, NJ-05 PVI R+4, Likely R  Our second new addition, Dennis Shulman, the blind rabbi running against extreme right winger Scott Garrett, got a nice write-up in the most recent New Yorker Magazine.  He had a good quarter and has 40% of Garrett's CoH in a prohibitively expensive media market.  He has been added to the DCCC emerging races list, and should benefit from some DCCC ad buys in the NY/NJ media market.

Jeff Merkley, OR-Sen  Jeff's race has been upgraded by Cook to Toss-up, and one recent Rasmussen Poll showed him in the lead.  He made a very strong impression at Netroots Nation.  His fundraising continues strong, but because of his competitive May primary, he has a long way to go to match his opponent's CoH.  Because he is a strong progressive, his race is absolutely key to improving the Senate next year.  He needs your support.

That's our round-up for the week.

Please give generously to our Better Democrats and watch for more updates and additions.  Keep us all posted on the races you are watching and candidates worthy of progressives' support.

Sam Bennett in PA-15 (0.00 / 0)
Mimikatz --- Sam Bennett is out in PA-15, further east in the state than PA-18.  PA-18 is unfortunately (again), a 3rd tier race in an R+2 district.

Fester

Charlie Dent (0.00 / 0)
And I'll correct what was a typo.

John McCain--He's not who you think he is.

Rather Tim Murphy (0.00 / 0)
Charlie Dent is PA-15, D+2
Tim Murphy is PA-18, R+2.

Both are rated Likely R.

John McCain--He's not who you think he is.

i look forward to (0.00 / 0)
the new additions.

Thanks, Mimi. (0.00 / 0)
It's really great to have everything handily compiled.

Dan Seals - IL10 (0.00 / 0)
I'm really surprised not to see him on the list yet. He's a strong progressive and has an excellent chance to beat Mark Kirk in a liberal district. He's doing a good job so far of tying Kirk to Bush. What more could we want?

Dan was on the old "Blue Majority" page (0.00 / 0)
That was a joint project of this site, Kos and Swing Statae.  And Kos has him on "Orange to Blue."  Plus he's on the DCCC Red to Blue list.  We are trying to add some new faces, particularly from races that are somewhat longer shots, and not duplicate all the other lists out there.  It isn't meant as any lack of support for his race.

John McCain--He's not who you think he is.

Please.  (FL-12 against Adam Putnam)

I would be remiss if I didn't suggest Kevin Powell (4.00 / 1)
He's running in NY-10 (Brooklyn) against an absolutely loathsome Democrat in name only, Edolphus Towns, best-known for opposing restrictions on tobacco and accepting money from Republicans like Al D'Amato and Jim Walsh.  As a point of comparison, while Kevin Powell was at Netroots Nation, Edolphus Towns held a fundraiser with J.C. Watts in Washington D.C.  And it's Brooklyn, too.  The district is D+41.  We should be able to get a real Democrat elected there, and this is our chance.

Towns is all-but invisible in Brooklyn, and he's weak, too--in 2006, he only got 47% (20,000 votes) in the primary, and his campaign fundraising goes more to pay for $500 lunches than towards his campaign.  If we can raise the money and turn out the vote, we'll win.  Obviously, it won't be easy, but with your help, we can win.

And I hope someone makes it clear .. (0.00 / 0)
to Powell .. that a lot of people here are willing to give him a 2nd chance .. but if he slips up ... he'll receive no mercy

We hear the message loud and clear (0.00 / 0)
And I completely agree with you on it.  I'm doing this as a volunteer gig, because I truly believe that Kevin Powell has reformed himself and put those mistakes in his past.  Unfortunately, Ed Towns is making more and more mistakes right now, and his support of the tobacco industry is just one of many such dangerous errors in judgement.

May I humbly suggest (0.00 / 0)
Jim Himes in CT-04?  CQ and Cook have just uprated the race to a toss-up, he has raised 85% of the incumbent (#15 at SSP), the net registration increase edge for the Dems since January 1st is larger than the incumbent's 2006 margin of victory, and the district votes Democratic at the presidential level. Not to mention that beating Chris Shays will mean the Republicans will not have a single remaining Representative in New England - not a bad symbolic victory.

More than half of CT-04 is the NYC media market, making money raised very important.

Jeff Merkley is most certainly one of our better Democrats running for Congress this year. The race is a complete tossup, no one can safely say who is going to win the Oregon Senate seat in November. That's why it's important for the netroots to rally around his candidacy. We could help push this race over into blue territory.
