Opening the Day: Paris Hilton Mocks That Old Guy McCain

Dog days of summer.

  • McCain backs down over tire pressure, as Paris mocks him as that old guy.

  • McCain's money is probably laundered.

"I have a lot of Arab business partners. I do a lot of business in the Middle East. I've got a lot of friends," Sargeant said in a telephone interview yesterday. "I ask my friends to support candidates that I think are worthy of supporting. They usually come through for me."

    Creepy.

  • Obama hits at McCain.

  • Google launches insights.

  • The NYTimes looks at Obama's big dollar bundlers, who are key to his rise.

  • Energy is a major issue.  Duh.  The post checks out both campaigns.

  • Kilpatrick narrowly won.

  • Steve Pearce in New Mexico and John Kennedy in Louisiana both went up with ads.

  • Walmart is giving more to Democrats than Republicans.

Through June, Wal-Mart's PAC had contributed to 86 House Democrats this cycle, amounting to just more than one-third of the Caucus. That's more than the 77 House Democrats Wal-Mart supported in 2006 and the 62 that received PAC money in 2004.

Since 2004, Wal-Mart has given $27,500 to House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (Md.), $22,500 to House Majority Whip James Clyburn (S.C.), $12,000 to Chief Deputy Whip Debbie Wasserman Schultz (Fla.), and $20,500 to House Ways and Means Chairman Charlie Rangel (N.Y.)...

In 2004, Wal-Mart's PAC contributed $69,500 to the CBC, its members and its members' PACs. Two years later, the PAC's total CBC contributions reached $108,050. This cycle, it's already reached $100,500, with more money left to be handed out.

The Blue Dogs PAC, its members and their PACs have cashed $203,500 worth of Wal-Mart PAC checks this cycle, exceeding their 2006 total ($185,000) with four months left. Members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus have received $64,500 in Wal-Mart money this cycle, matching their 2006 take.

  • The Cunning Realist looks at Anthrax in the media's 'greatest hits'.

New Mcain Ad Continues the "Biggest Celebrity In the World" Gambit (0.00 / 0)
Doesn't seem terribly effective (0.00 / 0)
I think that the only reason the first ad worked was because it was so out of left field to mention Spears and Hilton alongside Obama, which is what generated so much buzz.  This ad just repeats the "raise taxes, less jobs" mantra the Republicans always use.  Then again, I don't think like a Republican, so what do I know.

Vigilance Needed Rather than Panic (0.00 / 0)
I have concluded that Obama is ahead nationally and electorally and there is no need to send out panic signals or constantly second guess the campaign.

However, when you look at this chart posted by Bowers it is clear that every four years the rethugs are effective in creating a meme/frame or caricature of the dem candidate that not only sticks but loses the election for us.

I think Obama is on top of this but it is clear they are up to their old tricks by mocking his celebrity and 'messiah' qualities.

We have to be vigilant and blow back the caricature. (thanks paris for the help)

Google Insights (0.00 / 0)
The new Google Insights (being able to search trends for search terms among a variety of groups and subgroups) is pretty cool. You can view graphs of the search terms by date and it's amazing how closely the trends track the work week. There really is two kinds of internet surfing -- the kind you do from work and the kind you don't.

Clinton bashes Bush (0.00 / 0)
On hypocrisy on fiscal responsibility and for exploiting wars and tragedies to fill pockets of his crony buddies. (What a shock!) Its a good and solid punch.

In the coming days it's going to be interesting to watch this debate between John McCain and John McCain.

And Tapper says it's about

the disconnect between McCain the senator who has shown in the past efforts to be intellectually honest and McCain the presidential candidate who wants to win,

as if this is just some temporary mix-up and in January we're going to get Mr. Intellectually Honest back again.

As if. Look, pundits, what you see is what you get. Y'all just keep wishing on hidden ponies... the end of the rainbow is beckoning.

Sort of interesting (0.00 / 0)
Playing around with google insights... there was a noticeably jump in google searches for "Obama" and "Barack Obama" in Virginia the same week as there was a jump in google searches for "Kaine" and "Tim Kaine". So maybe spreading buzz on popular office holders in swing states is a good idea.

Though, I sort of doubt that this was the campaign's motive. If you just want to associate yourself with a popular figure in Virginia you pick Mark Warner.

Looks like it might be working with Bayh too:
