Via conspiracy in quick hits, fair and balanced programming at it's best:

Eighty-seven percent (87%) of Fox News viewers say they are likely to vote for John McCain, while those who watch CNN and MSNBC plan to support Barack Obama in November by more than two to one.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 65% of CNN voters plan to vote for the Democratic candidate versus 26% who intend to go for the Republican. Similarly, MSNBC watchers plan to vote for Obama over McCain 63% to 30%.

Only nine percent of those who watch Fox News say they will vote for Obama.

Analysis in the extended entry.

Chris Bowers :: McCain Leads 87%-9% Among Fox News Viewers

It is true that CNN and MSNBC viewers favor Obama by significant margins, but still nowhere near the 78% margins by which Fox viewers favor McCain. In fact, it is quite plausible that CNN and MSNBC are offering very "balanced" coverage, but because so many conservatives have turned to Fox, their viewer ship is slanted. Conservatives didn't like the balance, so they went to Fox.

Now, that isn't something I am necessarily opposed to. Personally, I read my news almost entirely from progressive sites like Daily Kos and Talking Points Memo. Other than that, I get my news from aggregators like Google News, and from large email listservs that discuss politics.  There is only so much aggravation a person needs every day, and as long as you are dealing with intellectually honest outlets, there is nothing wrong with just getting your news from fellow progressives.

The problem comes in when Fox viewers turn out to be highly uninformed about basic facts in the current political environment. The Pew Center found Fox viewers to be the second lowest informed audiences of all news outlets, ahead only of network morning shows. While blogs were only barely better than Fox, the survey didn't separate out progressive and conservative blogs. Given that Daily Show and Colbert Report viewers had the highest knowledge base, and given the broad popularity of those shows within the progressive blogosphere, I feel pretty comfortable believing progressive blog readers actually scored pretty high.

So, not only is Fox excessively slanted toward Republicans, with their viewership favoring McCain by nearly 10-1 margins, they also appear to be the least informative news network of all. Yeah, I can see a lot of good reasons for Democrats to go on a network like that.

While this might be news to the DC elites ... (0.00 / 0)
this isn't news to any reader of this blog .. I'd have to think .. and it is especially interesting given that CNN and MSNBC(except for KO) are trying to out-Faux Faux.

So what does it say about the strength of your candidacy (4.00 / 2)
When your supporters more or less have to limit themselves to an alternate-universe news channel in order to keep liking you :O

Least informative network, or just most ignorant viewers? (0.00 / 0)
That is, Fox News viewers tend to be conservative and conservatives tend to be least informed (or at least the most wrong).

This was shown in one of my favorite graphs ever that Matthew Yglesias linked to:

http://matthewyglesias.theatla...

Basically, shows that as conservatives become more "informed", the less they "agree" with established facts.  Pretty much describes the whole purpose of Fox News, no?

I mean, I suppose it's sort of just an echo chamber... Fox News puts out right wing talking points to people who are uninformed, they absorb the talking points, and continue to watch Fox News.

Howard Wolfson (0.00 / 0)
Somebody should ask Howard Wolfson what he is accomplishing by being a Fox News contributor. I know there are other Dems on the network but Wolfson is the biggest, freshest name I and think of offhand. Is Wolfson trying to reach potential voters?  Elites? Trying to reach the GOP base?

If you don't want to preach to the choir put your message on apolitical shows or outlets where you hit a slice of independents. I don't imagine 8% of a cable TV news audience is more people nationwide then you would reach doing a interview with a small town local paper.

John McCain

Let's Not Forget 2004 (4.00 / 2)
When PIPA found a whole raft of misconceptions were far more prevelant aomong Bush supporters than Kerry supporters, and found that key misconceptions about Iraq were muich more common among Fox viewers.

Unfortunately, the links for the reports and related press releases are no longer good, but what the heck, this is just a smart-ass comment.

"Senate passes expanded GI bill despite Bush, McCain opposition"

Just wait... (4.00 / 1)
Conservatives will use this to whine incessantly about how this "proves" CNN and MSNBC are "liberally biased".
