Digg headlines during DNC convention:

The first picture especially left me speechless. So, figured I'd let others help me come up with the proper reaction below...

I think if Sarah Palin was in charge of America she would sell off all our federal lands to the timber, mining and drilling interests. She is pre-Teddy Roosevelt.

The Council For National Policy Meets In Minn, Vets Palin
By Max Blumenthal Mon Sep 01, 2008 at 02:48:46 AM EST  print story
Last week, while the media focused almost obsessively on the DNC's spectacle in Denver, the country's most influential conservatives met quietly at a hotel in downtown Minneapolis to get to know Sarah Palin. The assembled were members of the Council for National Policy, an ultra-secretive cabal that networks wealthy right-wing donors together with top conservative operatives to plan long-term movement strategy.
CNP members have included Tony Perkins, James Dobson, Grover Norquist, Tim LaHaye and Paul Weyrich. At a secret 2000 meeting of the CNP, George W. Bush promised to nominate only pro-life judges; in 2004, then-Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist told the group, "The destiny of the nation is on the shoulders of the conservative movement." This year, thanks to Sarah Palin's selection, the movement may have finally aligned itself behind the campaign of John McCain.

If you think McCain is a hero... (4.00 / 1)
it's time to Change your Tshirt.

However, your picture shows that this is clearly a fundraising effort for the Obama campaign.  "Change" above a bunch of cups.  Did you pitch in a quarter at least?

On the other hand, McCain's shirt appears to be above some sleeves of golf balls.  As in, "I wish I still had the balls to disagree with Cheney--I mean Bush."

Offtopic: For those concerned about Gustav and NO (0.00 / 0)
Here's a site that gave a gripping first hand account of Katrina, from the Lakeview neighborhood in New Orleans:
http://gulfsails.blogspot.com/

This guy is a journalist who has now boarded up his house, but will stay home for the hurricane once again. You can expect a first class account of the impact of the storm and of the aftermath. But pls don't flame the man for staying in NO, he's very emotionally bound to the old home of his parents, and he's taken reasonable precautions (stocks, supplies) to stay safe. Plus, he isn't in it for the publicity, his blog isn't well known and more of a personal diary.

A must read if you're a fan of "Nu Awlins" and concerned about what Gustav will do to the city.

Check the old stories about Katrina (16 entries) on the right hand side. Most personal and thrilling report about the hurricane I ever read.

Heroes don't run campaigns of lies and smears like John McCain does.

This image of Obama is just god awful (4.00 / 1)
I saw the artist who designed the image at an event at the DNC convention.  I had to leave before he finished leaving so I didn't get to speak to him.

It is astonishing to me that he seems to be totally oblivious to the historical,  artistic vocabulary he is referencing.  That vocabulary is Stalinist art of the 30's.  I have hated this image from the moment I saw it, it is off putting and ugly in and of itself.  But being unaware of the historical vocabulary it does Obama no favors whatsoever.

The artist did at least admit in the discussion that his artistic attitude toward Obama has been sycophantic.  Sycopnancy in a democracy is a piss poor substitute for clear eyed assessment and admiration.

Sheppard Fairey's other pre-Obama work is in a similar stylistic vein. And I've seen an interview where he says he is very much aware of the historical vocabulary (unfortunately I can't find it online right now, otherwise I'd post a link). The image was used in official Obama merchandise, and approved by Obama's people. So they weighed the pros and cons and decided such a striking image was worth using despite potential criticism - which I haven't heard of too much, apart from maybe Glenn Beck.

Also I think it's worth adding that that '30's style of iconography was also big here in the US with the WPA and even in WWII. Maybe not centered as much on single persons, but definitely using ideas like "Progress" in the art.

As to your point on sycophancy, well I hope all the kids who buy into the branding and hopefulness also are learning about the politics of accountability and grassroots pressure. I know at least a few who are. Oh, and the FISA group on MyBO is a good sign on that front, right?

his own word about his own art was "sychofantastic" (0.00 / 0)
Just becasue the Obama campaign approved it doesn't make it any better....and the look of 30's american art was different....it was cleaner, milder and not so focussed on a person...The imagery used for a person is personality driven art...it is undifferentiated, adoring and cult like...

There is no well known image of FDR in that artistic voacubulary.  My uncle had a gallery with a lot of WPA art...it didn't look like that. 30's agitprop had a different quality.   But Fairey's does look Stalinist.  Do you think the Obama camapign knew that when they approved?  I think not.

may have contracted out to make t-shirts, and these may in fact be his/her views.  If not - I hope someone helps the artist sue...
