What If They Put On a Republican Convention and No One Came?

I managed to snag a credential to walk around the Xcel Center where the Republicans are holding their convention.  Most political conventions are designed around glitter and glitz, and a nagging feeling that there's a backroom you have to get into where important decisions are being made.  Credentials are highly sought after, and the sense of history is palpable.  But this one feels different.  The glitz and glamor is half-assed, the Republican themselves seem mostly irrelevant, and there are probably more security guards than delegates and spectators.  It feels like a funeral, or the scene of a disgraced CEO returning to his company to clean out his desk.  The sense I get here is... embarrassment.

Now McCain's decision-making skills are appalling, which makes planning impossible.  There's no clear message, but even beyond message, they hadn't even announced the speaking lineup until a few hours ago.  This is basic nuts and bolts stuff, and the pros are obviously elsewhere.  Given three days of messaging to the public, the McCain campaign has chosen to articulate nothing, leaving a void where Palin is the only topic of conversation.  There isn't even a controversial hit piece on Obama of some sort.  It's a joke.

This is compounded by other factors, a sort of system-wide collapse of the Republican elite class.  There aren't very many good Republican Congressional candidates this cycle, and many of the incumbents aren't showing up.  This means that lobbyists and donors have no reason to be here, and they aren't.  I'm told by Republican friends that Gustav caused lots of people to cancel their travel plans and parties, but my guess is that Gustav gave people an excuse to cancel their plans.  It's dinner time, and there are very few people buying concessions.

It's so deserted that there aren't even the sleazy people that you find at every political convention, and the lunatics didn't bother to show up.  The protesters are here to wrestle with the police in riot gear, and the media is despondent about how empty and sad it all seems.

Quite a contrast (4.00 / 2)
... to the energy and enthusiasm displayed by the Democrats last week.

I'd love to think that this is because they are played-out as a party, awash in the realization that their philosophy is failed, their leaders are bankrupt, and the people aren't buying their nonsense any more.

Sadly, I don't think that's the case.   The lobbyists are probably just taking everyone who's anyone out to a nice lobster dinner.

Woops! (4.00 / 4)
This is definitely not the sort of story we'll be getting from real journalists.

Do you have a source for any of this, Matt?

Or do you just believe your own lying eyes?

And, where are your pjs, anyway?

An empty Republican convention.... (4.00 / 3)
Such a beautiful ::sniffle:: glorious ::sniffle:: sight! I am getting all misty eyed just looking at those empty rows and rows-- if only they were empty voting booths in heavy Republican districts it would be glorious and divine... sniffle.....

I worry about one thing (4.00 / 6)

 Palin's speech tomorrow.

She's been isolated for days now, with nothing to do but sit down with consultants and get her speech together.

And given all the coverage, she will get eyeballs. Plenty of them.

And all she needs is a Checkers moment. Probably focused around her daughter.

At that point, the media declares all her problems solved, and moves on. She becomes a barracuda again. "America's sweetheart." The tough gal who stared down all her nasty critics.

That could change the narrative in a hurry, scandals or no scandals.

Is the Obama camp ready for some good counterspin? Or better yet, some pre-emptive framing?

Tomorrow will either be a life preserver or the final anvil. Let's make sure it's not the former.

"We judge ourselves by our ideals; others by their actions. It is a great convenience." -- Howard Zinn

I want to believe she's an anvil (4.00 / 1)
Being an optimist has blinded me in the past, and I don't want to repeat the mistake with Palin by counting her out.

However, there are only 60-ish news cycles before the election, and at least two will be consumed with Palin-tology:
* the day she testifies, under oath, about troopergate, which has been scheduled for sometime in the next couple of weeks
* the day troopergate is resolved, scheduled for sometime just before the election.

I'm just pointing out that there are additional possible inflection points in the future, and that tomorrow is not the end-all-be-all day for Palin.

Isn't her lawyer going into super-delay mode (0.00 / 0)
so that the second day happens on or after November 5th?

Doesn't really matter (4.00 / 2)
When Bush won in 2000 he went to Bob Jones.  An organization criticized for banning interracial dating.

What it isn't known for is the fact that it will kick off any woman on campus who wears pants.

Sarah Palin is a huge wedge issue right down the center of the Republican party.

We haven't seen any of that, though, (0.00 / 0)
have we?

Desmoinesdem reported on it. (4.00 / 1)
She went into the belly of the beast, the Christianist "mommy blogs" to bring their side of the story and they do not like Palin.

And that was before the latest news on Bristol.

something to keep an eye on (0.00 / 0)
is if the number of people in polls saying they don't plan to vote goes up in the next week or two.

I caught a few minutes of the Cindy & Laura show yesterday ("put on our American hats..." (??)) and was really annoyed by the stupid camera zooming, every 20 seconds, in- and out- of the the 'America First' banners in the arena.

But, even though it is a pathetic slogan, that is the single message they will pound to death these next 2.4 days, AIP or not AIP, "America First" and "Obama Not Ready".

That is one sad picture of the concession people, Matt. Shucks, makes me wish I could be there just to buy a hot dog or somethin' from them so's I could cheer them up if for just a moment or two. Heck I might even shoot the bull with them and tell a lie or two like, "How about that Sarah, huh?! Ain't she somethin'!"

my guess is (4.00 / 1)
the concession people are all democrats

that's what I was figuring too. (0.00 / 0)
and they're probably in a union on top of it.

I'm glad it's done

those pictures (4.00 / 2)
are amazing.

Holy crap.

I knew when they announced this at Xcel instead of the Target Center the crowd would be small, but this is ridiculous.

Insert shameless blog promotion here.

Target vs. Xcel (0.00 / 0)
The seating capacity isn't all that different; they're basically the same size, and the Xcel is newer and much nicer, so I wouldn't draw any conclusions.

That said, it's been amazing how little an impact the RNC has had for me, just a few miles from downtown; I haven't heard any buzz when running errands and such. No energy at all.

Partly right (0.00 / 0)
20K vs. 18K according to wikipedia. But also keep in mind that the RNC was replaced at the Target Center by Ron Paul I believe. Which is a fun storyline.

John McCain opposes the GI Bill.

They all look so old and rich and lost without their luxury boxes (4.00 / 2)
There is absolutely NO energy; the delegates do not  look happy to be there.

Glum;  when they do try to look "happy" and excited it's fake looking

I'm watching c-span

This does not look like America AT ALL

And it's boring

Another contrast to the Dem convention (4.00 / 2)
They are ALL WHITE and almost all middle aged or older. The camera sweeps across the audience repeatedly and there are hardly any people of color and lots and lots of gray hair.

Well, I"M having fun. (0.00 / 0)
Tagteamed with Vermin Supreme as the delegates stood in line to enter.

Me: "C'mon, you folks look like you're going to a funeral, not a Convention. Where's the Republican team spirit?"

Vermin: "When I say John, you say McCain. Okay? John (silence) JOHN! (silence.)

Every now and then there's one who grins. "I saw that smile. He's an infiltrator. Waterboard him!"

I return as they're exiting. "Funeral's over, time to liquor up!"

The cops are actually pretty tolerant, so long as you don't arrive as a "group."
