Here's Lieberman's speech.

Every second I spent in Connecticut working to get rid of this scumbag was worth it.

You think he said "Young Man" (4.00 / 2)
because "boy" would just have been to obvious.

Hey! Kid! (4.00 / 1)
GET OFF MY LAWN!!!

[ Parent ]
eh, pretty weak tea, honestly. (4.00 / 1)
if this is the best they've got on obama, i'm not at all concerned.

also, the speech is ridiculously formulaic, and actually doesn't tell us much of anything about mccain (because there isn't too much positive to say).  weak, just weak.

now, that doesn't mean that i'm not pissed at lieberman for giving it.  don't get me wrong.

I couldn't watch. (0.00 / 0)
Are there any taglines coming out of this convention besides "country first"?

[ Parent ]
i just read it.... (0.00 / 0)
um, i think they are pretty much going with the 'obama isn't a reformer with results^tm, whereas mccain is.'

they further insist that obama hasn't taken on the 'democratic establishment,' which is a pretty stupid line of attack, considering that the democratic party is actually popular.

not to mention the fact that in just a few years as a senator, obama has a pretty impressive reform record.  in fact, it is one of the only areas where his accomplishments stack up pretty well with those of longstanding senators.

It is time to make sure that LIEberman (4.00 / 2)
that sick scumbag loses his chairmanship.

weird (4.00 / 1)
"You'd have to be me to know how much I appreciate it" - his response to the applause from the crowd.

That's just...odd.

the problem is... (0.00 / 0)
...trying to say he is not partisan, and that parties suck, and that he took on corrupt republicans, while at the... GOP convention just does not work.

[ Parent ]
and now clinton (4.00 / 1)
Is praising Bubba going to get points?  This is just weird.

[ Parent ]
His usual martyrish attitude, I thought. (4.00 / 1)
Poor, poor Joe.  Nobody knows the trouble he's seen, suffering the persecution of the radical left all for the sake of his principles.

I hope all of the Democratic members of the incumbency protection racket feel like they're drinking sand tonight.

"Young man" (0.00 / 0)
is he even trying to hide the racism?

Joe's Speech (0.00 / 0)
For Dem leaders, this speech should have the same effect as Samuel L Jackson's Jedi death ray in showing Senator Palpatine's true face.

the flag background (0.00 / 0)
Is now blue behind Lieberman.  Clever.

Ick (0.00 / 0)
"Trust me, god made John McCain, and he is his own man."

[ Parent ]
Why does Lieberman get this spotlight? (4.00 / 1)
I mean, why does the GOP think that Lieberman is a popular figure, likely to sway anyone?

I do know some people that just remember him from Gore/Lieberman (0.00 / 0)
who think of him as still a solid democrat, and him speaking here has some weight with them.

[ Parent ]
wow more clinton praise, this time for Bill (0.00 / 0)
the GOP is in trouble when they're positively invoking dem political figures in their campaign.

Michael Bloomberg, prince of corporate welfare

Lieberman is ad-libbing (0.00 / 0)
Makes straight-face argument that Obama is inexperienced and Palin is full of mavericky goodness.

John McCain lets lobbyists shape his economic policy

he's so out of sync (0.00 / 0)
With that crowd.  His speech is crafted for the viewing audience, but the crowd is merely being polite.  He just said "we all know we're in some tough times" - not in that room, those that think that are "whiners" as Phil Gramm just affirmed today.

Has he even gotten a standing ovation for anything yet?

It's building toward the end (0.00 / 0)
when they started chanting 'country first'

Reminds me of George Bush senior (0.00 / 0)
When Lieberman claimed that McCain/Palin were the real change agents (or something like that), it reminded me of George Bush's claim - made while running for reelection against Clinton - that the GOP represented the real change.

Seems equally lame.

"young man" (0.00 / 0)
I know that's supposed to be something of a putdown, but isn't advanced age commonly cited as the #1 reason not to vote for a candidate in polling?

Those were the good old days (0.00 / 0)
You and me both, Matt. Those days in July 2006 were heady times indeed. I wonder where the float is nowadays?

hows the full time job going? (0.00 / 0)
n/t

I just wanted to say (4.00 / 6)
that four, eight years ago, a candidate like Palin could come onto the national stage, define herself on her terms, and go skipping merrily to higher office.

She's not getting away with it right now, in large part because the online left blogs/media are doing the work to bring everything to light, and it's all getting picked up by the traditional media. She's being defined before she has a chance to define herself.

Funny Al Giordano line (4.00 / 1)
"This is star power. Not since the Muppet Show have I gotten to see Statler and Waldorf on the same stage on the same night. And what's with that sky blue background? It's worse than the lime jello green from June 3. Can't wait 'til Kermit shows up. Oh, wait, he played Jim Leach at the Democratic convention."

Leach (0.00 / 0)
was duller than Lieberman.  So I guess we'd have to concede the speech by the opposing party shill victory to Lieberman.

"The Kiss Float" - Great Politics! (4.00 / 2)
Every second I spent in Connecticut working to get rid of this scumbag was worth it.

I know I am joined by many in appreciating your work up there. You and the other bloggers who were working on the ground for Lamont helped persuade Connecticut Democrats to reject Joe Lieberman as a Democrat. That primary defeat removed a huge chunk of Joe's legitimacy to criticize other Democrats for their stance in opposition to the Iraq War.

Lieberman might still have ended up on that stage tonight if Connecticut Democrats hadn't defeated him in the primary but if he was standing there as a Democratic Senator his damage would be that much greater. Even though the pundits (and many in the party) were outraged at the "loony left" for dethroning an icon like Lieberman I have no doubt that damaging Lieberman also damaged Bush and the Republican political machine.

Bottom line, your direct actions in Connecticut and the supporting action on the blogs was textbook, effective political action. Thanks one more time for that!

Obama, happy now? (0.00 / 0)
I wonder if Obama feels bad NOW for having campaigned for LIEberman.

it's really hard to view their show through neutral eyes (0.00 / 0)
But I'll try. I have to say it seemed very milque toast to me. First, we get the Bushes to remind us whose third term McCain is running for. Then we get the two old dudes and neither of them has ever been well known as enthralling speakers. I didn't think the POW stuff was presented as emotionally as it could have been and I felt no "Joementum" during Lieberman's snooze-fest. "To know John McCain is to love John McCain is to know John McCain...." Why exactly should Democrats vote for McCain? Because he stood up to Reagan one time? Because he sometimes goes against Republicans? Doesn't Obama go against Republicans more often...why not just for him? Oh, because he's a "young man."

Boring stuff.

Lieberman's Rational... (0.00 / 0)
I suspect one significant reason Lieberman came to St. Paul to campaign has a great deal to do with getting in a few wacks at Al Franken.  He is more -- much more concerned with keeping Norm Coleman in the Senate than he really is in throwing in with McCain.  The story all goes back to November, 1990, when one of Franken's best friends, Paul Wellstone, defeated Lieberman's best Senate Buddy, Rudy Boschwitz.  I note that tonight Lieberman took up the fight and threw a couple of nasty ones at Franken.

Ditto on CT (0.00 / 0)
When I lived in CT, I voted for Lamont twice. (And by the by, I ran into Lieberman and his entourage as I went to vote against him in the Senate election in New Haven). Totally worth it, and then some.

Living back home in Atlanta now and look forward to voting for Jim Martin over Saxby.

What a lame speech by Joe. For that matter, the whole convention looks so...old. and dated. Like '96 all over again.

The most liberal and inexperienced nominee for President (0.00 / 0)
Says Fred Thompson about Obama.

Wow.  He clearly didn't read any lefty blogs this year.

More liberal...
FDR
Adlai Stevenson?
Hubert Humphrey
Walter Mondale
Michael Dukakis
LBJ

Less or equally experienced:
Abe Lincoln
James K Polk
Woodrow Wilson
Alton Parker (1904)
Wendell Willkie

Also there were a number of generals who'd never held political office (or even voted--Z Taylor) before.

The Democratic nominee always (4.00 / 1)
magically becomes the most far left candidate for president EVAR! Hell, if Evan Bayh were the candidate they'd be saying the exact same thing.

I'd add Truman to that more liberal list btw.
