Rep. Hilda Solis: The Carbon Neutral Economy Creates Union Jobs

Hilda SolisToday is the global warming forum in LA by Congresswoman Hilda Solis.  I blogged about it here, and did an interview with her which you can watch here.

Moving to a non-fossil fuel economy is going to create unionized jobs, improve the economic prospects of low income Americans and working class minorities, and generate an entirely new growth sector of the economy.  Scratch that.  I shouldn't have used the future tense.  It is creating jobs and economic opportunities.  I got an email from Don Lyster, Congressman Solis's Chief of Staff, letting me know what Solis was up to during the recess.

The Congresswoman visited the East LA Skills Center today.  The Center is run by LA Unified School District and is the only educational facility in Southern California which provides solar panel installation training. The teacher of the class will be one of the featured speakers at Solis' forum this Thursday.

The Congresswoman met with the students in the solar installation training class, a group of mostly Latino males, but also African Americans and Anglos. After completing the training, they will be placed in a pipeline for solar installation jobs - mostly union (IBEW) and well-paying jobs.  Others will become contractors.  Some want to start their own solar installation contracting firms.  One trainee was a 56 year old Latino male who said he was inspired to return to the classroom because of the economic promise of the renewable energy industries.  He has spent his career working as a custodial worker in LA schools.  Others mentioned that they are excited to play their own role in conserving energy and reducing American dependence on foreign oil in their own way.

You can find out more about the forum here.  There's a new economy coming, and the leaders in bringing it to us are progressive Democrats like Solis, rural Democrat Tim Walz, and Governors like Eliot Spitzer, who just announced the completion of the first green affordable public housing project in New York state.

Get on board the new economy.

Chris Bowers and Matt,

You always advocate encouraging democratic candidates to use framing that will benefit progressive movement in the long run. I am surprised and also disappointed that you totally ignore our frontrunner - Hillary Clinton's 'good' behavior.

Yesterday in Iowa, Clinton reaffirmed she is a progressive.
http://news.postbull...

During a stop earlier in the day in Dubuque, Clinton defined herself in sharply populist terms. She became the latest of the presidential candidates to align themselves with the trust-busting days of President Theodore Roosevelt in the early 1900s.
"America was a country filled with haves and have-nots with not too many people in between," Clinton said. "In response to those excesses, a progressive movement was formed and they understood that the welfare of each of us is dependent fundamentally on the welfare of all of us."
"I consider myself a thoroughly optimistic and modern progressive, and we need a new progressive vision for America," said Clinton. "I believe we can grow our economy in the face of global competition and do it in a way that benefits all Americans." ... Peggy Gaul, of Walnut, was wearing a bright orange National Rural Letter Carriers Association T-shirt, and said she was in Council Bluffs to hear Clinton talk about issues that affect her directly. "I am middle class, I am concerned about the middle class, and how she feels about working people and giving them a fair shake," Gaul said. "The working environment for the last few years has been not very supportive of labor, and I would like to see that change."

On the other hand, Obama continues to use right-wing frame to blame democratic party, even his mouthpiece Huffintton did not like it...

Obama Says Bush Not Solely to Blame
http://www.huffingto...

Not all the nation's ills can be blamed on President Bush, Democratic candidate Barack Obama said Wednesday as he called on Americans to change the nature of politics and institute more openness in government.
"Part of the problem here is not just George Bush and the White House," Obama told a crowd of hundreds gathered at a park in Cedar Falls. "We can't just change political parties and continue to do the same kind of things we've been doing. We can't just go about business as usual and think it's going to turn out differently."

He's accusing Clinton of some sort of 'divider', and he himself a better 'uniter'. This is simply wrong. He's use right-wing framing to elevate his own stature...
I hope you can be fair in that regard no matter how much you loathe Clinton. Otherwise your rhetoric of promoting progressive ideas is simply not credible...

Male dominated jobs? (0.00 / 0)
The stereotype of union jobs like these is that they are male dominated.  Would that be accurate for these new jobs?
