Public: Refocus the Campaign

The public is pretty damned smart.

A majority of Americans say the debate should be held. Just 10% say the debate should be postponed. A sizable percentage of Americans, 36%, think the focus of the debate should be modified to focus more on the economy. 3 of 4 Americans say the presidential campaign should continue. Just 14% say the presidential campaign should be suspended. If Friday's debate does not take place 46% of Americans say that would be bad for America.

In terms of whether to continue the campaigns, 14% say that the candidates should do that, 31% say they shouldn't, and 48% said they should refocus the campaigns.  This is called democracy, people, and the public gets it.

And yes, it's likely the Democrats have mostly cut a deal by now with the Bush administration.  This sounds like a very very bad idea.  It's especially lovely to listen to Barack Obama on TV talking about how partisanship shouldn't be a part of these negotiations, and explicitly calls out a reform of the bankruptcy code and putting through the stimulus bill as things that don't belong in such a deal.

Awesome.  This is a partisan crisis and it should be addressed with partisan strategies.

I am still baffled... (4.00 / 2)
as to why Obama wants to kill reform of the bankruptcy code and putting through the stimulus bill.

Sirota is going to be pissed about that.

Changing the subject (4.00 / 1)
The McCain camp has successfully changed the subject from their crappy poll numbers and the crappy bailout to the "bold move" to cancel the debate. Maybe it's only a partial change of subject, but they have managed that.

Good (4.00 / 1)
Focus on that. Hang it on McCain. "At a time Americans need leadership on the economy, McCain is instead distracting from the issue with unhelpful stunts. How do McCain's campaign games help move us forward on the economy...?"

Oh, certainly (4.00 / 2)
I don't know that the new subject is that much better for them, but the McCain campaign has been getting slaughtered for more than a week now. They had to do something; almost anything is an improvement for them. Having two broken legs is bad news, but it's better news than having cancer.

That I suppose is the "staunch the bleeding" theory. It could be that the "Hail Mary" theory is more apt. They've already thrown one of those with the Palin pick. Maybe that was more of an on-side kick. I dunno. It's too late in the day for me to get to heavy into metaphor shopping.

Maybe they think they can keep this up (0.00 / 0)

Actually maybe that's just the plan. Hail Marys every two weeks from now until the election! Tune back in on October 10, when John McCain will don motorcycle gear and jump through a hoop over a tank of flaming sharks. No presidential candidate has ever made a bold move like that before!

i'm furious!!!!!!!!!!  The most shocking statistic I read today was from the asia times article that someone else linked:

At the same time, the Congressional Budget Office had previously projected a record fiscal deficit of US$500 billion for 2009. The MFI will further blow up the deficit to an unprecedented level, exceeding US$1.4 trillion. US debt, jumping with the takeover of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to 86% of GDP, has moved to an unsustainable level.

Even if this is inflated, how much is it inflated by?  They're throwing away my future even further and a lot of other people's, which is what I told my Senator.

And when does the public get to see the text of this compromise that the treasury has given up 98% on?  So they keep their basic framework and lose on 98% of debates with pro-market democrats?  Great.  If the wealth surtax or the repeal of the Bush tax cuts and steps to help poor people stay in their houses or all three are not in there, I'm going to be beside myself with rage.

Getting a poll of 1000 people within hours of a breaking news event makes them official BAMFs. Let's hope the media narrative doesn't derail the public's first impressions.

you've got the numbers transposed (0.00 / 0)
or your sentence should read: In terms of whether to suspend the campaigns...

the more positions obama takes (0.00 / 0)
the less i like him as a candidate, where the hell are the left leaning politicians when you need them, oh i forgot they are in jail or being ridiculed as extremist socialists that would destroy are way of life, looks like the free market gang is way ahead of them on that mission.

The betting markets are based on CV (4.00 / 1)
But Obama is surging right now.

Intrade has 56.3 to 44.5 and it hasn't been like that since before the McCain convention bump. Fingers crossed this political stunt poorly disguised as being non-political has the opposite effect that McCain et al hoped.

"The one way to make the bailout negotiations MORE political is to have a major party presidential candidate try to bigfoot his way into the debate under the guide of not being political."

Obama should go up with a national ad... (0.00 / 0)
"John McCain has missed xxxxx votes over the last 2 years, xxxx on economic issues.  Why has it taken him this long to find his way to the Capitol he has worked in for 26 years."

"Senator McCain has supported and applauded the deregulation of our financial systems which have caused all the problems we are experiencing today."

"Recently he went further and suggested Deregulating Health Care just as we have done in finance."

"Do you want John McCain in Washington?"

Anyone done the research to fill in the numbers?

Anyone got a few million to put into an ad buy?

filling in my some of the data... (0.00 / 0)
...stealing from Hunter on DKos...McCain has missed 412 of 643 votes in the current session, 61.4% missed.
