Urgency In The Bush Dog Campaign

With Matt’s great post this morning, we are officially starting up our Bush Dog campaign on Open Left. This campaign has both short-term and long-term goals. In the short term, we aim to help progressives win the next fights in Congress over FISA and Iraq. Over the long-term, this is part of a broader effort that touches on the core of the purpose of Open Left: building a progressive governing majority.

In the short term, both of the fights we face our imminent. The next stage of the FISA fight will start in September:

The administration's warrantless wiretapping program looks set to be the subject of renewed and bitter wrangling between Congress and the White House when lawmakers return to Washington in September.

Even before then, a conservative front group for the White House is rolling out a $15,000,000 advertising campaign to argue that the escalation is working:

A new group of prominent conservatives plans to begin a multimillion-dollar advertising campaign Wednesday to urge members of Congress who may be wavering in their support for the war in Iraq not to "cut and run."

The group, Freedom's Watch, is rolling out television, radio and Internet advertisements in more than 20 states and 60 Congressional districts.

Ari Fleischer, President Bush's former press secretary and a spokesman for the group, said it would initially spend $15 million on the effort, which will also encourage voters to put pressure on their representatives for continued support of the war.

Mr. Fleischer declined to say in an interview Tuesday which members of Congress were on its list, but he indicated that it would include some Republicans as well as Democrats.

Here is one of the ads from the group:

Considering that the group contains many former White House officials, this is clearly a Bush administration front group. Further, Fleischer may have declined to indicate which members of Congress are being targeted, but in the extended entry I provide a partial list of 15 Senators and 18 Representatives who are targeted in the campaign. Notice that at least two Bush Dogs, John Barrow (GA-12) and Mark Pryor (AR-Sen) are included in this partial target list. The White House itself clearly feels that conservative Democrats are key to maintaining its ability to govern, and it is targeting them with television advertising accordingly.

The point I want to make here is that both the Iraq and the FISA fights are not taking place in the weeks and months down the road. For all intents and purposes, both have already been engaged. As such, we must have equal urgency in out campaign to combat the Bush Dogs, and bring an end to the conservative governing majority in Washington.
In the extended entry, you can see just a partial list of what we are up against in these fights over Iraq and FISA. By reading Matt’s post, profiling a Bush Dog in your area, and signing up to receive email alerts on this campaign (upper right corner of the page), you can start to fight back.

They always have so much money... (0.00 / 0)
Well, at least this is $15M they won't have for the 2008 election, but damn.

Framing (0.00 / 0)
Rather than frame it as Iraq and FISA, I'd suggest Iraq and 4th Amendment Constitution. "Constitution" is much harder to argue with, and has better legs than FISA.

Invasion of Privacy is my preference (0.00 / 0)
On the FISA bill, this is blank check nightmare territory. They said they wouldn't give Bush another blank check and that is exactly what they've set out to do. On using the term 'Constitution,' while entirely correct and a good supporting point, you'll get dragged into a debate about inherent vs. inferred rights etc. I think we just hold them to

'STOP GIVING BUSH A BLANK CHECK'

'Stand up for our rights and stop laying down on the job.'

'Fight damn it!'

not sure if i'm clear on how much this issue bothers me....

In other news, a mysterious figure appeared in an upper-west-side Starbucks with only this cryptic message:

It's time for Ari Fleicher to get back in the game.

Me | My Work | Future Majority

Are Dem MCs morons - or worse? (0.00 / 0)
At least those Dem MCs who voted for the IWR (five year anniversary coming up!) took a decent interval before acting the deceived lover.

Accordingly to the  CSM piece, these days, the mea culpa turnround time is altogether snappier:

In the weeks since this bill's passage some Democrats have begun to regret the manner in which it was approved. They feel the vote was held in haste, with summer break looming. And they've started to worry that by changing just a few words in a massive piece of law they've opened the door to practices they did not intend.

Ya think?

Suddenly, they're acting like they're in third grade, and the dog ate their homework.

The IWR led to much more death and destruction; but I find the suggestion that Dem MCs did not know exactly what they were doing when the FISA vote came up in a way even more offensive.

And the suggestion (if true) that Dems are going to try and make things better after the recess merely tends to confirm the depth of contempt in which pols of both parties hold those to whom they are notionally responsible.
