As McCain Turns, Another Bailout Blackout

Even as McCain is pulling out of Wisconsin and New Hampshire, the Bush administration is working aggressively to get what they can while they still can get it.  Bailout Sleuth reports again that the Treasury is blacking out more contracts, this time with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP and Ernst & Young.

Bailout Sleuth also reports that Ernst & Young was the auditor for Lehman Brothers, and both Ernst and Young and PricewaterhouseCoopers worked for AIG.  Ernst and Young in fact paid $1.6M in penalties to the SEC for because it "violated independent auditing standards in connection with work" associated with AIG (and PNC Financial).  Fortunately, firms can recuse themselves if they feel it necessary.

That's oversight you can believe in, my friends.

Be interesting see how much, if any (4.00 / 1)
political capital President Obama spends "fixing" the bailout.

he certainly spent quite a bit of his political capital (4.00 / 2)
lobbying for the crappy bailout bill, twisting arms in Congress and calling in favors and using the bully pulpit to persuade the populace to support it.

All the things we were told he could not do to stop the FISA bill--because he was "just a senator, not the president yet"--he did in order to force this bill through.

And he did them in the teeth of massive popular opposition to the bill, from both Democratic and Republican voters. So much for the argument that he can't actually push hard on any issue before the election because he can't afford to antagonize moderate and conservative voters.

Ah well. I'm sure things will magically be completely different after his election, and the massive institutionalized corruption and inertia of the Washington establishment will somehow just disappear then.

thanks, Matt... (0.00 / 0)
...for continuing to keep this on the radar. Remember when, right after the invasion of Iraq, all the museums containing 5,000 years of Mesopotamian history were looted, and Rumsfeld declared with a shrug, "Stuff happens?"

This bailout is the final looting frenzy of an administration that has drained the public treasury for private gain for eight long years.

Stuff doesn't just happen. It's planned, and it's deliberate.
