McCain's Pennsylvania Gambit

McCain's best hope for victory requires taking a Kerry state big enough to offset the losses of Colorado, Virginia, Iowa and New Mexico.  If he could hold all the rest of the Bush states (including Nevada) and take Pennsylvania, he wins 273-265.

So, McCain has been barnstorming PA lately as part of operation Infinite Delusion.  They have 15 events held or scheduled in PA for the month of October including 7 by McCain himself, 6 by Palin, and 4 by Cindy (2 are joint McCain/Palin events).  How's that working for him?  October's PA polling:

Tell you what there Rocky, I don't think you'll be running up the steps with a crowd cheering you onto victory anytime soon.

Don't take PA for granted (4.00 / 1)

The Obama campaign certainly isn't. There's a major push to get as many volunteers as possible to canvass there over the weekend.

I'm hoping it's more indicative of a generalized GOTV operation than it is of internal data showing PA teetering. But McCain has decided that going all-in on PA is his least bad option, and the media coverage of his gambit has certainly re-energized the GOP base there. This could turn out very, very badly if we're not careful.

 Don't let up.

What I Worry About (0.00 / 0)
is not complacency so much as flatly inaccurate polling data skewed by, if not lairs, "the Bradley Effect".  Living as I do in the Deep South where myth dies hard, there is any number of folks who will tell you that they are not racists, they have Black friends..name your cliche...but in their hearts they would rather have a leg gnawed off than to see Barack Obama elected President.  I worry about all the polls I so eagerly look to each morning.

I'm most worried about some form of Pennsylvania steal (0.00 / 0)
And the various voter suppression tactics.

Various ballot challenges, long lines at polling stations, night before leaflets, and of course, the electronic voting system.

Incompetence might bungle it, but the Republicans have a real uphill battle in the courts to achieve the steal.

you don't need the courts ... (0.00 / 0)

Well, I'm there right now... (4.00 / 2)
...in Harrisburg, the state capitol...came down from NYC on Sunday. We're currently gearing up for a Bill Clinton event here tomorrow morning. From what I heard today, Sarah Palin got vociferously booed at a Giants Center thing in conservative Hershey; reputedly, MSNBC noticed. (I'd love to see that if someone can find it.) McCain is said to have cancelled an event today, while Obama and thousands of supporters toughed it out in the rain. I've talked to far more Obama supporters than McCain supporters on the phone, though that's obviously not a scientific survey. One woman told me she was definitely voting Obama, and when her husband said something in the background, she said to me, "He's acting like he wants to vote McCain, but he knows better. If he does, he'd better not come home."
