The List: Emailing for Downticket Candidates

Various field and internet operatives are obsessed with what Obama is doing to do with THE LIST.  How will he use it to govern?  Who will be running it?  What kind of organizing will he do?  So far, the Obama campaign has created a remarkable organization with limited direct downticket assistance, but that seems to have changed.  I have three emails now from Obama's campaign helping different House candidates.  The email universe depends on the race and the state.  Here's a sample.

I don't know how extensive this is or who he's doing it for, but it shows that the decision has been made somewhere in the campaign that Obama can afford to spread out a little bit.  That's excellent news.  He could even go further.  Jane Hamsher put out the suggestion that Obama guarantee a DSCC loan so they can go after Chambliss, McConnell, and Wicker.  That would be incredibly useful for the long-term viability of his Presidency and the ability to begin to fix the country.

You can see the outlines of the post-election GOP strategy right now.  Even as conservatives brace for mass layoffs on K Street and on the Hill, one specialty is going to go way up in value: "There will also be a lot of business for Republican lobbyists who have the clout to rally GOP lawmakers against a given piece of legislation."

As one Republican aide said, "Guys will get paid a lot of money to defeat stuff."  Now, I'm not someone who thinks that 60 votes is that important, it's more about having between 58-62 along with a committed group of progressives willing to throw their bodies on the line to extract concessions.  But we are in striking distance of 60, and that would be sweet.

Obama could push it even further.

...addressed the "list" question although it really is about adapting the Obama Campaign online community into a tool for governing and change.  Campaigns are different animals than governing but the two can be melded together -- hopefully.  One of the tragedies of modern politics was how Clinton failed to transform his successful electorial campaign into a lasting accomplishment like universal health care (although Clinton's peace & prosperity looks pretty good in retrospect).  I think Obama can do better.

Any Presidential campaign ends up with a heck of a list but clearly Obama has the opportunity can do something much, much more.  This promises to be a really important topic over the coming weeks.  In any case I'm sure Joe's conversation with Simon Rosenburg of NDN will be up soon at www.ndn.org and it was also covered by C-Span.

Campaigning vs governing (0.00 / 0)
You hit the proverbial nail. More than any other candidate, Obama has the opportunity to to "meld together" his campaign's acquisition of an enormous email list with a potential to use grass-roots advocacy to pressure policy decisions. Let's hope that his staff realizes this and turns this enormous asset into a tool they can leverage to pressure legislators to enact progressive policy.

I got one for McCollum and Franken (0.00 / 0)
they've sent this out for every single district except ones with horrible Democrats (Jefferson, Foley Jr.) and if there is a governors election they add that too.

As for the DSCC. They've got enough money and are already spending millions going after those three. Obama could certainly send them anything he has left over after the election to help with the Georgia runoff.
