Local Media Continues to Pound Darcy Burner

Local Glenn Beck ripoff Ken Schram insults breast-feeding mother.

In most of the country, the wave is breaking hard against Republicans, but in Seattle, the local media, which I'm more and more convinced is and has always been nothing more than a conservative interest group (as Upton Sinclair wrote as far back as 1919), is trying its best keep Republican Dave Reichert in Congress.  The Seattle PI, the 'liberal' newspaper in town, came out with its puff piece about Reichert, Reichert seasoned by 4 years in office.  Obviously, the Seattle Times used its position to issue a partisan attack on Burner by exploiting a bureaucratic oddity of Harvard.  Both papers are collapsing in readership and local political reporting has been decimated by a wave of buyouts and layoffs, but they are still quite powerful.

Matt Stoller :: Local Media Continues to Pound Darcy Burner

Reichert is all over TV calling Burner a liar and a fraud using the money from his illegal loan from Media Plus, and local TV personality Ken Schram, a shock jock style reactionary who reminds me of a less intelligent blue state Glen Beck (Schram's compared breast-feeding in public to public urination and embarrassed women who breast feed, leading to a breast feeding rally), spent a few minutes on local TV awarding Darcy a 'Schrammie' for lying about her degree on KOMO.  KOMO is one of the stations happily extending credit to Reichert's media buyer.  Schram's segment is here, and boy is it ugly.  He followed up with a radio show where he bullied and condescended to Darcy.  As a quick example, on the show, Schram often snidely said 'Darcy, Darcy, Darcy,', and then wondered why she didn't get a replacement degree after her house burned down.  She points out she is running for Congress, replacing everything she owns, Harvard is a huge bureaucracy, and she got the ex-Dean of Harvard to validate her on video, and Schram just continues to call her evasive.

The local Republican press is just jumping all over it.  Here's the Bellevue Reporter:

Democrat Darcy Burner is campaigning like she's running against George W. Bush. But she isn't. Congressman Dave Reichert is an independent-minded moderate with strong environmental credentials. That is why both the Seattle Times and the PI, neither of which likes Bush, have endorsed Reichert.

Another reason to support Reichert is that it's not clear who Burner really intends to represent. Reichert believes he's there to support the people back home, not parties and interest groups. But Burner's major constituency seems to be the national network of "netroots" activists who are both liberal and archly partisan. That might fly in Seattle. It shouldn't fly here.

Then there's the issue of character. Reichert has a reputation for being honest and up-front. But twice now, Burner has been caught inflating her job credentials. Two years ago, her campaign misrepresented her status at Microsoft, where she was just a middle manager. And this year she told several audiences that she had an Economics degree from Harvard. No she doesn't, and when the Seattle Times caught her, Burner's instinctive reaction was to attack Republicans for playing "stupid semantic games." That tone - strident, aggressive, diversionary - is classic Darcy Burner. The numbers in this race are close, but they shouldn't be. Dave Reichert by a mile.

This whole attack by the local media and Republican establishment is so egregious that it's comforting to watch the NRCC's latest criticism, a release of this video in which Darcy calls John McCain a 'warmonger'.

Oh, and Reichert is getting obvious illegal donations at this point, a $4000 donation which busts the $2300 cap.  No worries, though, he's a Republican and that's fine.

I'm feeling good about Darcy's chances now (4.00 / 1)
The Republican/newspaper axis in WA is starting to flail about like Liddy Dole, and I know Kay Hagan's winning. This makes me feel really good about Darcy's chances. What are the most recent polls? Do we have some early voting numbers that apply to this race?

Conduct your own interview of Sarah Palin!

re: Seattle media - then there is an opportunity (4.00 / 1)
Progressives should create a funded online-only alternative for Seattle news.  A serious effort, not some lefty-weekly site with stories on rock bands and movies.

Progressives need to organize, period. (4.00 / 2)
Seattle progressives have lacked an organized movement for a quite a long time. Given Washington's union density - one of the nation's highest - and its huge number of progressive residents and activists, as well as its financial and online resources, this should not be terribly difficult.

And yes, The Stranger is not sufficient.

The NW Progressive Institute is a start. Horse's Ass is a start. But we need to take that to the next levels.

It's not Seattle, of course (4.00 / 1)
Seattle is the 7th District: Jim McDermott.

Riechart succeeded Jennifer Dunn.  That is actually progress.

Seattle is culturally liberal, but is far too refined and materialistic to support something loud and impolite like activism.  In the 8th district, people are quite openminded about what others do in the privacy of their $800,000 homes, as long as the landscaping is tasteful and attended regularly by professionals.

I think part of Burner's media problem is that she's a little angry, and Western Washington doesn't do angry.  Hence, she feels like an outsider, especially to the old guard of the 8th district.

I agree.... (0.00 / 0)
....wholeheartedly with one aspect of your comment, that she feels like an outsider to the old guard.  I'm not sure if it's the perception she's angry...or perhaps uppity/youthful arrogance (not that Darcy is any of those things).

The many of the residents of this district at its creation in the early 1980s (when their homes were ~90k in 1983 dollars) are still here; now they're in their mid to upper 50s/60s.  Their formative political years were during the Reagan Apex.  They believe in low taxes, privacy, and personal freedom and accountability.  They are not culture warriors or religious fundamentalists.

Reichert is comfortable for them.  I hate saying this, but if Darcy was exactly the same person, with the same background, but a man in his early 50s, she would win by 8 points.

I am well aware of the geography (0.00 / 0)
Having lived there for 6 years recently. I stand by what I said. I strongly disagree with you that Seattle and/or the Puget Sound metro region have any particular cultural reasons why we don't have a better progressive movement. The simple fact is that progressives in Washington State are generally unorganized and don't understand the task before them. Hence the local media establishment's dominance of political discussion, which has resulted in the state drifting rightward.

Burner as angry? That's absurd.

I think differently (0.00 / 0)
Burner is savaged for channelling the energy and money of the netroots.  Reichart calls her politics a "poisonous brand of hyper-partisan negativity" and calls her a celebrity among the extreme left-wing netroots.  He notes that she's against the Blue Dogs - too radical to even get along in her own party.

And she is all those things.  She's a netroots candidate, not an eastside candidate.

And, um, sure....Seattle has an extremely educated population, a large union population, and lots of back to the earth types, but somehow there's absolutely no progressive movement....um, just because, maybe these smart educated people just can't get it together...nothing to do with the culture of superficiality and meticulous mean-spirited nimbyism of people like Democrat Mark Sidran, who in my view is a perfect example of Seattle politics.

Sounds like America (0.00 / 0)
Not sure why all this "lack of a progressive movement" stuff is being applied to Seattle, in particular.  It sounds like the default state of the country.

A real progressive movement nationwide would have been making a loud, clear argument that the attacks on ACORN were not only untrue but actually a coverup for REAL voter-suppression ugliness by the GOP.  Aside from a few sites like Open Left, where is the movement that dares to go there?

A real progressive movement nationwide would have defended Rasheed Khalidi and the right of Palestinians to argue for their position.  Aside from a few sites like Open Left, where is the movement that dares to go there?

We can only hope that such a movement grows.  I can't say it exists now.

Can you provide the original link for that contribution? (0.00 / 0)
I mean, that's just naked lawbreaking.  Shouldn't be too hard to push a LITTLE bit of coverage.

How much canvassing is Darcy's campaign doing? ... (4.00 / 2)
the reason I ask is .. I am presently reading Conscience of a Liberal(the Wellstone version .. not "The Shrill One") .. and he placed a lot of importance of canvassing .. as he says .. who are you going to trust .. your neighbor .. or some stupid ad/talking head on TV?

Great book, eh? (4.00 / 1)
That's one of my favorite books of all time. His book about organizing in rural Minnesota (Rice County, forget what the books called) and Wellstone Action's "Politics the Wellstone Way" are very good reads as well, a little more dry. But progressive politics is a winning politics, as Paul would say.

John McCain: Beacuse lobbyists should have more power

I read it earlier this year (4.00 / 1)
Along with Krugman's of the same title. Also a good read. One day I'll have to get to the ghost-written Goldwater "book" that their books are a response to, to see how this all began, and maybe for a few laughs.

The best story ,,, (4.00 / 1)
is how .. Wellstone says ... Conservative/Republican friends of his .. gave him Goldwater's book .. claiming it cured them of their youthful Democrat-ness .. and Wellstone replied that he read Goldwater's book in his relative youth as well .. and it convinced him all the more .. that Wellstone's course was the right course ...  Wellstone is sorely missed

A lot (0.00 / 0)
I can't give you quantities, but I've been working in the office and I know that a lot of people have been canvassing for a long time. Also, lots of people on the phones calling. Darcy herself has been on the road in an RV meeting with as many local groups as possible.

inside or outside? (0.00 / 0)
Wouldn't it be better in a Democratic landslide filibuster-proof situation (as we all hope happens Tuesday) that Seattle would be better served by Darcy Burner caucasing with the party in power than to have their (in-the-tank) representative sitting with the minority party?

Huh? (0.00 / 0)
The filibuster only applies to the senate. She's running for a house seat. And the 8th district doesn't include any part of Seattle. It's on the other side of Lake Washington.

Reichert has multiple over-donors (0.00 / 0)
Burner's report is clean on that front, Reichert donors keep contributing despite hitting their 4600 limits.

I've given her double what I've given any other Dem this cycle (4.00 / 1)
Including Gregoire and Obama. Reichert's a lying sack of shit Republican coward, and now, apparently, a felon. I'd love to see charges brought against him for violating federal election law. How ironic, the "law and order" former county sheriff running on a platform of lies, smears, no accomplishments, and now violating federal law.

WA 4th might be in play! (0.00 / 0)
I just got this email from Washington State Democrats on how the WA 4th CD might be in play. This is the one that's held by the corrupt Doc Hastings, whom Denny Hastert appointed to head up the house "ethics" committee after he fired the now-retired Joel Hefley, when the latter had the temerity to try to file ethics charges against Tom DeLay several years ago. He was also instrumental in the firing of Seattle US Attorney John McKay, for refusing to prosecute phony voter fraud charges after the '04 election. A real piece of work.

We just received word that the race for the 4th Congressional District (Central WA) is in play.

New polling shows George Fearing (D) is within 5% of unseating incumbent conservative Doc Hastings! The poll by Bainbridge Media Group reads:

On the question of whom to support, 52.5% would vote for Doc Hastings; 47.5% would chose George Fearing... The data demonstrate that there is little question Democratic Congressional Candidate George Fearing may defeat 14-year incumbent Republican Congressman Doc Hastings.

We anticipated that George was close and we are now making a final push to remove Doc Hastings from office.

Please go online right now and give a donation to help George win. The Fearing Campaign is buying their weekend media blitz tomorrow and needs your help.

The State Republican Party is terrified of losing this seat and is using every trick in the book to keep George's message from the airwaves. They are violating our first amendment rights and demanding that the local cable company pull George's ads. The Republicans know how close the race is!

Every $1000 will buy 100 radio ads. You need to know that you can really make this race happen, so please go online right now to help!

When radio ads cost $10 and TV ads cost $25, your money will make a huge difference. Please donate just $10 or $25 today.

Thank you for your support and good luck to everyone on election day!
Sincerely,

Jaxon Ravens
Executive Director
Washington State Democrats

George Fearing is within 5% of conservative crony Doc Hastings in the 4th Congressional District. Hastings, former "Chair" of the Ethics Committee, has ties to corrupt lobbyist Jack Abramoff and presided over the committee during the Tom DeLay scandal.

Support George and donate just $10 for a radio ad, $25 for a TV ad, or whatever you can afford

Too bad Darcy Burner (D-Netroots) isn't honest with Washington State voters (0.00 / 1)
The real problem is not the media. Darcy has a new story from the Seattle PI posted on her homepage today, so obviously she is getting some push from the press that she sees in a good light.

Her problem is this: she simply will not come clean with voters and went on the radio today, defiant and angry. Two radio hosts usually on the opposite ends of the spectrum were laughing at her. She doesn't need help, she's burying herself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

oh, and don't miss this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

Hahahaha! (0.00 / 0)
I love how you insult Darcy by associating her with us as a means of persuading us.  Your trolling technique needs a lot of work!
