Artur Davis Defends Endangered GOPer & Attacks Better Dem Over Bailout Bill

Seems to me Rep. Artur Davis (D) just made himself a big contender for a primary in 2010. Davis, as you can see from this Birmingham News story, has decided to spend the last week of the 2008 campaign defending endangered GOP Rep. Mike Rogers and attacking Better Democrat Josh Segall (D) for Seagall's criticism of the Wall Street bailout bill:

Artur Davis critical of Josh Segall's anti-bailout campaign ad

WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. Artur Davis admonished a fellow Alabama Democrat on Tuesday for running a campaign commercial that takes issue with the $700 billion economic rescue plan approved by Congress earlier this month.

Democrat Josh Segall of Montgomery, a candidate for Congress in east Alabama, started airing a television commercial districtwide Tuesday that called the bailout of the financial industry "Wall Street welfare." Segall is challenging U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Saks, who twice voted for the rescue plan.

"I think it should not be the subject of a political attack on Mike Rogers," Davis said. "I wish Josh was not running that ad that refers to the bailout."

Davis said he was defending Rogers' vote as well as his own.

"There is no question it was an unpopular vote, but sometimes members of Congress have to cast an unpopular vote," Davis said. "Mike cast the right vote. Six of us cast the right vote. I stand by that position."

Davis represents Birmingham, Alabama - not exactly a super-wealthy place. And yet he's publicly attacking a fellow Democrat for criticizing Congress's decision to send $700 billion to Wall Street bankers in New York - literally and figuratively far away from places like Birmingham.   It's nauseating, though when you look at Artur Davis's campaign finance reports and realize what kind of a corporate lackey he is, it's not surprising.

Give money to Josh Segall right now through OpenLeft's Better Democrat page. Help Segall continue airing this ad so that he can win the seat over Davis's objections. I hope Segall can use Davis's disgusting behavior to juxtapose himself against the corrupt wing of the Democratic Party. That is, I hope in a tough district like the one he's running in, Seagall can use Davis's shenanigans to show how he's going to be a true independent populist progressive who doesn't kowtow to either party.

UPDATE: Commenter Adam B. floats one of the most inane, factually ungrounded conspiracy theories I've ever seen on this site: Namely, that Davis is doing this with the deliberate intent of helping Segall triangulate. If that were true, Davis wouldn't be calling Segall "the far left" as he did in the local newspaper:

"Most of the Democrats who voted against the bill were from the far left, were pretty hard core," Davis said in a telephone interview with The Star. "These were mostly ideologues. I'm not sure Josh wants to be that kind of Democrat in Alabama."

Being called "the far left" by a nearby Democratic congressman while running in a Republican-leaning district is no help...at all. I've heard of partisan blinders, and I've heard of Democratic activists who are willing to bend over backwards to see only good no matter what an elected Democrat does. But claiming Artur Davis is actively trying to help Segall by doing what he's doing is way beyond that - it's just straight up lying.

He seems to want to run for Governor in 2010. Doesn't seem like this is a smart way to do that though.

Governor or Senator (0.00 / 0)
Davis was first elected when I was in high school. He got lots of good press for his work in the Black Belt (which is overwhelmingly poor and rural). Given that, it's really disappointing that he's attacking Segall on an issue like the bailout. He's arguably the most powerful Democrat in the state. He should not be criticizing any of Alabama's Democrats, and a good progressive like Segall deserves his support.

Only one word comes to mind: (4.00 / 1)
Fuckwit.

What the hell does Artur Davis think he gains from doing this? If he spins Mike Rogers as a man willing to take tough decisions, he gets none of the reflected glory. It doesn't help him in his obvious aim to go statewide - you can't appeal to Republicans just by saying "Sure I'm black, but I was a dick to one of my fellow Democrats just before an election, look how bipartisan I am."

And he's just made himself a lot of enemies and hurt his chances of getting the AG job in an Obama administration by breaking omerta.

It's just moronic. It's an unpopular vote, but it has no impact on Artur Davis, so he should shut up.

Davis is DLC .. through and through .. I am sure people wouldn't be so shocked .. if people knew .. or remembered that

Sure (4.00 / 1)
It's just a question of why he's so painfully dumb.

Seagall can use Davis's shenanigans to show how he's going to be a true independent populist progressive who doesn't kowtow to either party.
And suppose Davis knew this in advance, and is complicit in letting Seagall in triangulating against him to help Seagall win?

Is Davis really that sharp? ... (4.00 / 1)
one can only hope .. though he doesn't show much sharpness being apart of the DLC

Adam...that's the silliest, stupidest thing you've said (4.00 / 1)
I've read a lot of your dumb prognostications, but that's straight up idiotic conspiracy theory, especially if you talk to people on the ground...and especially if you read how nasty Davis has gotten. Here's the Anniston paper:

"Most of the Democrats who voted against the bill were from the far left, were pretty hard core," Davis said in a telephone interview with The Star. "These were mostly ideologues. I'm not sure Josh wants to be that kind of Democrat in Alabama. As I have understood it, Josh is not in that camp. He's more of a moderate Democrat, one that isn't against the business community for ideological reasons. This is an important point for Josh to appreciate."

Getting called "the far left" by a fellow Democrat in a general election for a Republican leaning district is no help...at all.

More on that (4.00 / 1)
Rogers has been running a war on liberals as his only campaign strategy.. so this far left thing will ring true.

From Rogers' campaign site, his radio ad:

But Joshua Segall, Joshua Segall has worked with the most radical liberals in Washington, sided with extremist abortion groups, siding with liberal special interests that want to raise taxes and kill jobs, wrecking our economy. Joshua Segall, say no to his extreme liberal values

He's called Josh a Pelosi-Liberal. New York Liberal. Check this ad.

No, I hadn't seen that. (0.00 / 0)
I withdraw the speculation.  That said, I'm not sure what "dumb prognostications" you're referring to.

Davis right about bill (4.00 / 1)
This was unpopular but the right thing to do. Having said that, he should have let Seagall do his rhetoric. If it works in his district, go for it.

Wow! David Sirota is talking Segall! (0.00 / 0)
Have I died and gone to Heaven? David Sirota is talking Josh Segall, and earlier today Cenk Uygar said he'd look into Josh Segall. (Specifically that Mike Roger's Congressional and Campaign Chief of Staff Christopher Brinson was reprimanded for his role in Abu Ghraib. While Brinson's underling serves 10 years in prison for the torture he ordered; Brinson advises Mike Rogers especially for his role on the Homeland Security Committee)

I've been begging for national attention for this race for weeks. I wrote the same article earlier today. I can't believe Davis would make these self-serving, condescending statements. There's absolutely no reason he couldn't wait until next week. It's hard enough turning East Alabama blue, and then to have the most popular Dem attack Segall. The only good news is that Rogers is Segall's best surrogate, making a laundry list of missteps.

I got a story up on ProgressiveBlue about AL-03 and a different one up on Left in Alabama AL-03 Last Chance to Join the Segall Family, Did Barack just call out Mike Rogers. Thanks for your article David!!

Well, Blue Dogs... (0.00 / 0)
Conservative Democrats are going to be bipartisan -- which is why sober minds have been warning people to calm down regarding the prospects of a Democratic sweep.

Also - Obama voted for the bailout as well and basically said the same thing that Davis said (unpopular but necessary law). So I'm not sure what the drama is all about....

I think the drama comes from Davis (4.00 / 1)
criticizing his fellow Democrat and praising a Republican a few days before the election. Segall is going to need all the help he can get in Alabama, and he doesn't need to be publicly scolded by the state's most widely-known Democrat. Davis' statements make Segall seem naive and not-ready-for-prime-time. I hope Segall pulls it out. He's not perfect, but he'd be a pretty good Democrat for Alabama.
