"Center-Right Nation" Watch - Being Liberal Is Not Smart Edition

From the Washington Post today:

"My own hunch is that Obama is smart enough not to want to govern as a liberal," said Peter Wehner, a former Bush administration official.

That's a new wrinkle in the "Center-Right Nation" meme - that after having campaigned as a progressive, and after winning an election in which exit polls show most voters said they understand that Obama is a progressive, Obama would be showing intellectual stupidity by actually governing as a progressive.

Obama's mission (0.00 / 0)
is to govern as to garner a second term.

Your mission is to "grow liberalism".

Don't conflate the two.

Because the purpose of a second term would be ... (4.00 / 2)
what, exactly? Power for power's sake? Have we sunk to the level of Republicans after only two days?

The purpose of government is to make peoples' lives better. We just gave Obama the enormous power of the U.S. presidency. If he uses it responsibly, lives up to his oath of office and improves the lives of regular people, getting a second term will not be a problem.

Horses before carts.

Disconnect (4.00 / 3)
Since the election, the media has been spending half of their time preaching how important it is for Obama to fulfill all of his promises to the electorate, and the other half ranting about how he cannot govern as a liberal.

Now, Obama didn't run to the far-left, but he did run on universal health care, raising taxes on the rich, increasing regulation and investing heavily in infrastructure, education and alternative energy. It seems to me the more of the promises Obama manages to keep, the more liberal his governance will appear. I guess that's tough shit for the pundits.

Although liberals keep bashing any Republican (or Democrat connected to Clinton) who makes the same arguments, yesterday Pelosi herself said that she's aiming for the "middle."  Let's drumbeat her down for making the same argument. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories...

Also, Obama said he wanted Republicans in his cabinet. Where, exactly, are the liberal/left Republicans that will appease Democrats who find the middle repugnant?

That bogus "middle" (0.00 / 0)
Geez, don't get me started. But has anyone in the corporate media even broached the fact (or "concept", if you prefer) that what passes for "the middle" these days is so far screwed skewed to the Right that mainstream values (pro-choice, universal health care, getting out of Iraq, etc.) are now labeled as the "far left"?

And can Pelosi just once wait for even a day before she declares her intent to throw us under the bus? Give me strength.
