My state legislator here in Denver, Terrence Carroll, makes history:

Colorado is poised to become the first state in the nation to select black lawmakers to lead both legislative chambers after House Democrats on Thursday nominated Rep. Terrance Carroll as speaker of the House.

It's been a pretty incredible year here in Colorado on race issues. We voted for Barack Obama, became the first state to reject Ward Connerly's anti-affirmative action ballot measure, and now we are the first state in American history with both a black House Speaker and black Senate President. Pretty awesome.

Considering the State is less than 5% AA.  I guess this really shows how Obama could win in the Mountain West (and maybe even add the Dakotas, Arizona and Montana to the list next time).  Those states have a strong Libertarian tilt, but do not have the same racially divisive history as the South or even the upper Midwest/Northeast.  Once the Republicans proved that "small government" was always a fake concept and started invading the personal lives of all Americans, those states were willing to move in a new direction.
