Colorado Becomes First State to Elect Both a Black House Speaker & Black Senate Presidentby: David SirotaFri Nov 07, 2008 at 17:30 |
My state legislator here in Denver, Terrence Carroll, makes history:
Colorado is poised to become the first state in the nation to select black lawmakers to lead both legislative chambers after House Democrats on Thursday nominated Rep. Terrance Carroll as speaker of the House. It's been a pretty incredible year here in Colorado on race issues. We voted for Barack Obama, became the first state to reject Ward Connerly's anti-affirmative action ballot measure, and now we are the first state in American history with both a black House Speaker and black Senate President. Pretty awesome. |
