No Research to Support the Obama Education Agenda (jeffbinnc)
According to leading "education researchers" (sub required), the draft guidelines that the Obama administration has published for federal economic-stimulus money and Title I aid for schools "have no credible basis in research."

The researchers point to two regulatory priorities in particular that are lacking in research evidence: evaluating teachers based on students' standardized test scores and promoting the growth of charter schools.

"One theory of action seems to be that holding teachers more accountable for the gain in their students' test scores will induce them to become better teachers," writes Duke University's Helen Ladd. "At this point, I am not aware of any credible evidence in support of that proposition."

And research on the performance of charter schools has shown that their track record is "highly variable."

The article points out that the Bush administration was famous for insisting that schools adhere to policies and programs that were based on "scientific research" while it promoted an agenda that had nothing "scientific" about it.

Now, the Obama administration is insisting that schools make decisions based on "data that shows what works," while it pursues mandates that have no data to support them.

What's the difference?

Let me guess
The process was completely "open" and "transparent."

I am in earnest -- I will not equivocate -- I will not excuse -- I will not retreat a single inch -- AND I WILL BE HEARD.

What process?
I'm not aware that there ever was any kind of process for how the Ed Department arrived at these guidelines. They just descended from on high. But I guess when you base policy on widely accepted, yet unproven, truisms, you don't even need a process. Much cleaner that way.

I don't understand something
Obama has always been open to the idea of charter schools(as are many liberals btw) but he has always been harshly critical of evaluating teachers by test scores and "teaching to the test". He was critical of this as far back as 2003 and basically remained consistent in his criticism. Even earlier this year when he had a town hall, in Indiana I think, he mentioned something about not solely relying on tests but having a largely portfolio for teacher evaluation. So why the sudden switch?? I'm really surprised that he's basically endorsed Bush's grading method with respect to teachers. I think its being pushed by Duncan, but it's pretty obvious Obama has signed off.

Got any links?
My experience with Obama on eduction is that he is basically clueless. And totally about the CW of schools being "broken" and parents needing a "choice." If you've got evidence of a "switch" I'm all ears.

The Second Era of Good Feelings
At this point it appears that Obama makes policy decisions based mostly on watching Hardball and Morning Joe. I.e. whatever pleases the "Gang of 500" and the DC political, think tank, lobbyist and media establishment, is what he thinks is best for the country (or him). He so obviously and desperately wants to be loved and admired by these people, and is so transparently afraid of their rejection and criticism. He might be smarter than James Monroe, but he appears to be as callow and vacuous as our first "feel good" president.

There's something broken in this man, psychologically. He's smart enough to know better, but simply lacks the essential character to do the right thing. So he falls back on easy and safe conventional wisdom, and spins pleasant-sounding justifications to sell it. He wants to be loved more than he wants to do right. Has he even read The Prince?

"Those who stand for nothing fall for anything...Mankind are forever destined to be the dupes of bold & cunning imposture" -- Alexander Hamilton

You may be right
And you certainly state your point eloquently. But when it comes to education, I think there's a lot of misinformation among liberals about what is a progressive approach to improving our schools. Even leading liberal bloggers rarely blog about progressive education policy. And I think the DC establishment basically just doesn't care and relies on platitudes and kabuki dance to show that they do.
