How Obama Can Win Utah (Without a 20% National Victory)

An unlikely scenario?
Democratic candidates in Utah must feel as if they're facing an impossible task. The state is often considered the most far-right Republican stronghold in the United States. Winning Utah is akin to slaying a mighty dragon with only a bow as one's chosen weapon.

Like all dragons, however, Utah has a weak spot. The year 2012 may be a ripe time for Obama to shoot an arrow through it.

Some of you may recognize this map.

198450%

For those who don't, this is Ronald Reagan's landslide election over his hapless opponent Walter Mondale.

Unfortunately, for those who look for political trends, this map hides more than it reveals. For example, Reagan wins Massachusetts, but reasonable people would agree that Massachusetts is normally a Democratic state.

Here is a more revealing map.

Help RedState Banish Republicans From Power for 50 Years

RedState.com has a mission: reduce the Republican Party to literally one red state.

I admire that sense of purpose. Their new Facebook group is quite awesome:

First they supported Chafee.

Then they supported Specter.

Now they support Crist.

I pledge to give no money, no support, no aid, and no help at all to the efforts of the NRSC.

I agree. NRSC Chair John Cornyn simply isn't Republican enough. Marie Eastwood writes on the group's Wall:

Thank heavens there is a head on the shoulders in the blogisphere! Thank you Red State!!! ...I am donating to the Pat Toomey cause...

Exactly, Marie! Who isn't sick of these RINO's supporting literacy programs? Stande on principal.

More on the Wall from Mike Chalmers...

I stopped sending money months ago to any and all official RNC committees. But I do enjoy sending them copies of my SarahPac receipts in their postage paid envelopes.

All Republicans should do this. Just take those self-addressed stamped envelopes you get from Republican Party committees and stick them right back in the mail. Get one million people to do this, and maybe call it something Ron-Paul'esque...a "crazy-good idea bomb"?

Charles Simpson brings it home:

I will be donating to Sarah Palin for President in'12 and Pat Toomey for Pa. Senator as soon as his campaign becomes official. I like the Gov. of S.C. BTW.

Exactly. That Gov. of S.C. is da man! All Republicans should follow his lead and mail back your stimulus checks to the IRS. "Take that, Barack Obama. Can you hear us now?"

Support a good cause. Join RedState's Facebook group. And tell your friends...especially those in Florida, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Ohio, etc.

Oh, and if you have any guesses on which one state these folks are looking to keep red, do share...

Red California Death Watch

by: paulhogarth

In 2007, right-wing political operatives tried to place a measure on the June 2008 ballot that - if successful - would have awarded California's electoral votes by Congressional District.  Democrats and progressives strongly opposed it, because everyone assumed it would give the G.O.P. presidential nominee an extra 19 votes.  California is a deep blue state, but parts of Orange County and the Central Valley are still reliably Republican.  New data from last November's election, however, suggests that "Red California" is becoming less and less relevant.  Barack Obama carried eight Congressional Districts that had long voted for Republican presidential candidates, and John McCain came close to losing three more.  All these districts are currently represented in Congress by Republicans, but a few incumbents came close last year to losing to Democratic challengers.  It's only a matter of time before some of these districts will eventually flip.  None of this is a surprise, however, because the state's Republican base is older, whiter and shrinking in size.  But the rate of this change is quite staggering, which explains why Republicans in the state legislature have clung to the "two-thirds rule" for passing a budget.  After all, it's the only reason they have any power left in the state.
