"The One"

"In a world of 1s and 0s...are you a zero, or The One?" The Matrix (1999)

The recent line of right-wing attacks on Barack Obama have been to emphasize his popularity and turn it against him by painting him as nothing more than a celebrity -- "an empty suit" was the phrase I heard one pundit use. Right-wing trolls and bloggers have commonly taken to referring to Senator Obama online as "The One." This attempt at sarcasm is a reference to the character 'Neo' from the movie, The Matrix. As they do this, I have to wonder if they realize who this makes them in their self-created Matrix scenario: Agents? Sentinels? If, in a world of ones and zeros, Barack Obama is "The One," what is John McCain?

Mitt Romney's Money

by: David Kowalski

Mon Aug 13, 2007 at 04:56

Mitt Romney, as we all know, ponied up some $9 million dollars to his campaign.  Considering that Romney is worth $250 million that's a smaller amount than John Kerry risked in Iowa four years ago.  More importantly, Romney's opponents know that there is lots more where that came from (another $241 million to be precise) and have been put on their heeels in Iowa and New Hampshire by a barrage of advertising and organization.

Others have tried, but Mitt Romney may be the first person to buy his way into the White House on his own money.

Central to Mitt's efforts, of course, is the Iowa Straw Poll, a play to pay operation that, in the 2000 cycle at least, overwhelmed and subsumed the actual Iowa Republican caucuses.  Whether Rudy Giuliani, Fred Thompson, and John McCain make this undemocratic game go away is pretty much up to the media.
