When I came home to see OBAMA WINS IOWA on my hotel TV screen I started for the first time in my young life to feel hope. I was desperately hoping for it, I even thought it would happen. But deep inside I never really expected it too. Over the next few days I basked in the victory and relished the increasingly likely possibility that Obama would cruise to the nomination. Then their was New Hampshire. Again I was not prepared for the outcome. I was crushed. How could New Hampshire, the state that seemed to be Obama's base, hand him the loss? I just didn't know how it could have happened. I didn't know what to do or what to think.
Over the last few weeks, Mike Huckabee has come up with a campaign catch phrase for Iraq that has seemingly caught on a bit in the Republican Primary race.
"We broke it, be bought it."
I would like to start by expressing my frustration with this with a string of characters: (#)#)$&&%#(@@$(@@>?>@$*@#%*@!!!
Now to more eloquently voice my frustrations.
My problem with this phrase is really in its underlying meaning rather de-humanizing. Huckabee and the Republican spin doctors working for him have reduced Iraq, a nation of about 25 million people (and falling) with an extremely rich cultural heritage whose ancient civilizations are immeasurably important in the development of human society, to a vase at Pottery Barn.
If anyone else finds this phrase and rhetoric similar to it demeaning, dehumanizing and borderline racist please let me know. I'd like to think I am not the only one.
