My updates will appear in the twitter feed on the right.

–Reconciliation bill passes the House.  It will be sent to the Senate as soon as President Obama signs Senate bill into law.

–GOP motion to recommit, using Stupak language, has been defeated.

–Senate health care bill passes the House 219-212.  It can now be signed into law by President Obama. Roll Call vote here.

HCR needed a better name (4.00 / 2)
It’s going to end being called “Obamacare” which is pretty stupid.  Republicans will call it anyway, but Democrats and liberals need a better name to refer to it for future reform debates.

I'm not worried (0.00 / 0)
Repealing the law is a non-starter.  They need both houses and the white house to do it.  And when Obama isn’t president, no one cares about “Obamacare.”

The name Democrats need is specific things in the bill.  I voted to eliminate pre-existing, etc.

You call this quick voting??? (0.00 / 0)
This is agonizing!!!

REID: Voting against us was never part of our arrangement!
SPECTER: I am altering the deal! Pray I don’t alter it any further!
REID: This deal keeps getting worse all the time!

Well, It's Quick (4.00 / 7)
compared to the year it took to get here.

Year or… (4.00 / 1)
Decades?

[ Parent ]
Well (0.00 / 0)
The year felt like decades.

The decades felt like centuries.

Is Obama Bismark yet?

Not so much…

Pelosi's Speech Was A Pretty Impressive Conclusion (4.00 / 9)
I’m sorry, I no longer have the stomach to listen to hours and hours of this.  But I was glad to catch Pelosi at the end.  She really elevated things.

loved her (4.00 / 2)
I typically do.

[ Parent ]
She showed one thing (4.00 / 7)
that I wish all Democrats would learn.  Boehner gave a pretty good speech challenging her.

She acted like it never happened.  She made her argument, she didn’t bother responding to him at all.

Democrats and Progressives are obsessed by responding.  But arguments are won by making your points, not by responding to the other guy’s.

I see this mistake made over and over again.

Every good trial lawyer knows that one way to get to a witness is get them to start arguing with you.

The toughest witness is the one who acts like you aren’t even there.

so so true (0.00 / 0)
same for faux news and repube pundits. People need to stop making these ignorant fuckers relevant.

It always amazes me the debate… I mean the words of most of these people aren’t going to convince anyone so they basically just want to hear themselves talk and get a soundbite in… sometimes I think CSPAN is one of the worse things to happen to COngress… too many assholes on both sides preening for the camera.

[ Parent ]
She seems to be the one light (4.00 / 1)
that became brighter throughout this process in which many seemed to become so dim.   There seems to be an even keel which guides her through the waters.

Glad to know … (4.00 / 1)
there are 34 cowards in the Democratic caucus!!

The sad thing is… (4.00 / 4)

…these “no” votes won’t do diddly to save their seats. Whatever seats the Dems lose this fall are theirs.

I'll Play My Tiny Violin (4.00 / 5)
Seriously, those guys get fuck off.  I don’t mind having a big-tent party, but you don’t get to derail one of the biggest planks in your party’s platform over your pet issue.  That had too many “p’s” in it.

"Can" not "get" (0.00 / 0)
I’m both glad the bill passed and nervously watching to make sure the motion to recommit doesn’t pass.

Derail? (0.00 / 0)
It passed. What was derailed?

We'll see now if union primary threat materializes (4.00 / 1)
If I was advising union guys, I’d say they better follow through on that one, if they want to be taken seriously.  Nothing scarier then someone with a long memory.

How many are cowards and how many were released?   I wonder if we can find out because I’m willing to give a pass if leadership released them.

These anti-woman assholes can go fuck themselves n/t (4.00 / 5)

And I'm including Bart Stupak in that, too (4.00 / 2)

I’m just curious… are the women who are anti-choice and supported the Stupak language Anti-woman as well?

[ Parent ]
Yup (4.00 / 1)
If you vote to violate the fundamental, human rights of 160,000,000 American women, then you’re anti-woman in my book.

[ Parent ]
… (0.00 / 0)
Fair-enough… I guess I just wouldn’t think to call a woman anti-woman…  It’s like saying a black guy is racist toward other blacks, or any other race, creed, etc. towards their like.

[ Parent ]
If an African-American in 1850 supported the institution of slavery, he was a racist (4.00 / 1)
I’m not going to get into “self-hating” because I’m not interested in trying to read people’s minds or hearts.  But anti-woman politics is anti-woman politics, whoever’s carrying that particular flag.

[ Parent ]
that is (0.00 / 0)
true as well. Some people hate their own race like Michelle Malkin. She would throw acid in her own face if it meant she could be white.

An historic victory. (4.00 / 7)
Now on to improving the bill!

We PTDB! Now, let’s pass Grayson’s Public Option Act!

… (0.00 / 0)
Agreed…   While I don’t think Grayson will pass this year (and I would LOVE to be wrong on that) but I think if its worked this year and Filibuster is reformed, then we could see it passed in the next year or two.

[ Parent ]
Next year or two? Really? (0.00 / 0)
Cuz you know a Medicare+5 PO didn’t make it to 218 votes in the House.  It stopped at around 208-210.  Let’s say 210 to be generous.  And this was to be something available only on the exchange, whereas Medicare Buy-in would be for everyone.  But let’s be generous and say we had 210 votes for the Buy-in.  Where are the other 8 votes going to come from?  Which seats provide us with the opportunity for 8 more Yes votes?

Then you have the Senate.  No one ever really tried whipping for a Medicare+5 PO, which died by something like 8-15 in Senate Finance.  Even the weak PO could barely muster 51 votes through a series of increasingly vague public statements.  So we’re probably at much less than 51 votes for a Medicare Buy-in in the Senate.  If we even make it to a vote – I’m sure Max Baucus will simply let it die quietly in committee.

So we have to find the votes in the Senate, which will probably not come in 2010 and may not come in 2012 either.  Plus Max Baucus will likely remain chairman of Senate Finance until at least 2015, unless he dies or resigns in the meantime.  That’s not “next year or two”.

So in short, I don’t know where you get your optimism from.

House passes public option… (4.00 / 4)
Yes… a public option… for student loans…

Everyone has completely forgotten about the student loan reform bill that’s part of this reconciliation bill!!!

I told my wife about it, and she was ecstatic!

Let’s not forget the other big victory tonight… and that bill is definitely a bill that progressives can champion!

REID: Voting against us was never part of our arrangement!
SPECTER: I am altering the deal! Pray I don’t alter it any further!
REID: This deal keeps getting worse all the time!

Something tells me (4.00 / 1)
if that was a bigger deal, it wouldn’t have been a public option, it would have been government subsidies to Sallie Mae.

[ Parent ]
There was no time to lobby against it… (0.00 / 0)
The whole reconciliation bill came up so fast… the banks lost big on this one… BIG!

We'll see how it goes through the Senate, which the banks "own" (0.00 / 0)
Seeing what happened to cramdown, I don’t doubt that the banks can find 10 Democratic Senators to kill this.
