| Because it means I am part of a movement, part of some kind of coalition, adhoc and otherwise, of people who believe the same things about how we Democrats should govern to advance the Democratic agenda in order to do right by this country.
Because it means these ideas, thoughts and stances are cogent enough and obvious enough that they would occur to more than just one lonely person....alone at her keyboard... Do it alone...you are in mourning, do it with lots of others, you're organizing (Mother Jones, gutsy doyenne of American labor)
I had these kinds of thoughts contrary to the common wisdom many years ago...the 70's, the 80's, the 90's. After the anti war movement ended there was no community to share them with that was available to those of us who just had ordinary lives, who didn't make politics their professional lives....There was no one to connect with to try to do something to make progressive change. Now we do have a community and that community has become a major force for change....
We now have Maddow, Olbermann, Krugman who are top guns in the media. Unlike the 80's and especially the 90's when Bill Clinton, like sisyphus, had to push progressive measures uphill only to see them fall back down in a hostile media landscape; we are graced, defended and promoted by MEDIA who doesn't think all wisdom comes from the right.
So steal my metaphors, Keith Olbermann...it makes me happy.
So another NEWS FLASH!!!! WE WON.....THEY LOST
A member of the Village club actually said that on Countdown...Howard Fineman, a head courtier at Versailles...Olbermann asked Fineman if Barack Obama was glad that his matter of a fact and soigne statement "I WON" was leaked.
FINEMAN: Barack Obama doesn't say anything by accident. I have rarely, if ever, seen him do that. He knew this was a room full people who like to yack. Of course, it was going to get out.
And his point was, again, the Democrats won a historic victory in November. They have huge majorities in both the House and the Senate. And again, that's not an accident. That's an expression of the will of the American people. He might want to amend this statement to say, "Not only I won, but we won" in the case of the Democrats because that's really what he was saying.
Barack Obama won on November 4th, over 7% and 10 million votes. The will of the people writ big .
Democrats won the House by a larger margin than Republicans have ever had in the modern era. We will have 59 votes in the Senate. And may be on track to enlarge our numbers in the Senate.
We have overwhelming numbers, but Democrats...in the Senate, the House and yes, the White House, act like the Republicans still get to set the agenda. No they don't. Despite that, John McCain, who has been wooed by our new president, seems to be shocked, shocked that DEMOCRATS WROTE THE STIMULUS BILL!!!!. How dare they act like the majority, like they won!!!!
The voters rejected the Republicans on everything that mattered in this election...from the economy to regulation to Iraq to the environment to global warming and their upside down ideas of "justice"..
They don't want them to have a decisive voice in seting the agenda for anything. They want US to do that.
Memebers of the House, the Senate and as much as anyone else, Barack Obama himself, needs to ACT LIKE THEY WON. They need to understand that Republicans want the Demomcraitc agenda to fail. Their "improvements" have this purpose only.
Democrats should go out into that street, remember that Republicans wear the black hat, Democrats the white ones. Pass the stimulus bill that this country needs....big enough,and tax cut free enough to make it up that icy hill. The townsfolk are depending on them. |
