Who Is In Charge Of The Democatic House Caucus?

Nancy Pelosi on capitulation:

Capitulating, or otherwise letting the president have his way on everything from the war to domestic spending to taxes. Not so, says Nancy Pelosi.

“This is what is possible. This isn’t about caving,” Pelosi said this morning. She portrays the stands that she had taken earlier as “a high water mark,” essentially a bargaining position.

But oaths had been sworn, vows were taken and lines were drawn in the sand. Pelosi had promised that there would be no more war funding passed by the House beyond the $50 billion with strings attached that they sent over to the Senate pre-Thanksgiving. Now it appears that Democrats have agreed to send the president $70 billion of the $196 billion that he has asked for.

“The assumption that I made…that Republicans would see the light…was an inaccurate one,” she allowed. Pelosi says that she will vote against it after allowing it on the floor.

That just isn’t true. More is possible, but Democrats aren’t doing it because they think more is not politically viable:

ut it’s a simple truth, whether you support the war or not: There is a lot more Democrats could do to change, or at least challenge, the politics of the war in Washington, even if they do not have the numbers to impose new policies on President Bush.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) could force a vote a day over Iraq. She could keep the House in session all night, over weekends and through planned vacations.(…)

Democrats, in on-the-record and on-background interviews, said they do not do these things because they would be bad politics. Democrats in the House and Senate would splinter over such extremist measures.

In closed-door caucus meetings, members say, Democratic leaders like Reps. Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.) and Rahm Emanuel (D-Ill.) have carried the day by warning that there is no appetite for such tactics in the districts of vulnerable Democrats, upon whom the party’s new majority status depends.

More is possible, Madam Speaker. Your caucus isn’t doing more because they seem to be listening to Rahm Emanuel and Steny Hoyer. Do you agree with Hoyer and Emanuel on their advice to not do more, or are Hoyer and Emanuel actually in charge of the Democratic house caucus? Kind of makes you wonder…

Could be…. (0.00 / 0)

…..she’s playin’ the old ‘Rope a Dope…’ with Hoyer and The Rabbit. As we know, hell even the likes of PumpkinHaid know, the American voters, Dems and Independents and even a good fraction of ReThugs, want us out of Iraq. The few clips I’ve seen of Rahmbo in action, the Maher show in particular, where he is not in a scripted  setting show real dumb bunny. As for Hoyer how smart is it to go on record as being for giving Bush what he wants so he, Hoyer, can get his earmarks funded.

This ain’t rocket science folks. These are dumb people, doing dumb stuff politically.

Just suppose….

Pelosi doesn’t have the support, right now, to hammer these two bozos flat. What better way to eliminate them as obstacles to what she wants to do than to let them do as they will.

When the 2008 election doesn’t turn out the way Hoyer/Rahmbo have promised the caucus, and it won’t if they continue with their stupidity, then the axe will fall.

Just a theory but Miss Nancy is, by all accounts, one hell of a politician and she cannot, thanks to Code Pink and Tim Ryan, be unaware that the caucus is out of step with the people.

It's time for a Democratic Donor Strike (4.00 / 2)
Obviously Pelosi has been lying to the world all year. She has absolutely no intention of ever standing up to Bush, no matter what he does – torture, warrantless wiretapping, obstructing justice, invading Iran, melting the icecaps, it doesn’t matter to Pelosi.

Pelosi has one and only one goal: holding a majority in the House. She thinks she will achieve that goal by doing absolutely nothing and then blaming the Republicans.

We cannot persuade Pelosi to change with our arguments. All we can do is sit on our wallets and respond to every appeal from the DCCC and the DSCC with one word: NO.

Not one dime until our troops are home from Iraq and the Contitution is fully restored.

6,389 Democratic donors have joined our strike:

Red herring (0.00 / 0)
So now we’re trusting the judgement of our good friends at the Politico?

Actually, the VandeHei/Harris piece dates from September 28, I see. It’s no more persuasive on re-reading.

The tone is mockingly playful: after the second graf quoted, it goes on (emphasis mine):

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) could let filibusters run from now till Christmas rather than yield to pro-war Republicans.

Such tactics might or might not be politically sensible, but in their absence, anti-war lawmakers can hardly say they have done everything possible to challenge the war and bring attention to their cause.

The hacks were evidently not making serious tactical suggestions to Pelosi and Reid.

They were taking the piss.

Plus – they say that

Democrats, in on-the-record and on-background interviews, said they do not do these things because they would be bad politics.

but don’t quote any on-the-record statements.

And, finally, there’s nothing in the piece on which one could reasonably conclude that Hoyer and Emanuel are enforcing their will on a reluctant membership.

For lefties, the theory that the two of them, through threats and promises, are keeping Dem reps from doing what comes naturally, and confronting Bush is comforting, because it implies that getting these two guys out of the leadership would make a big change for the better.

I don’t believe it for a second.

“I don’t believe it for a second.”

What’s your explanation???

Trifecta gravy train! (4.00 / 2)
These guys see a decent win in 08, with a trifecta likely, if things go on as they have been.

On Iraq funding, say, there is no halfway house between giving in and confronting Bush by not sending him a funding bill.

In the ensuing fight in the media, the Dems think they’d probably lose.

And, if they did, they could well screw up their big day next November.

So – why take the chance?

Even less, for the likes of the energy bill, which Bush can veto without much of a qualm.

Plus there’s the culture of caution that is endemic among Dem MCs.

If that’s the Hoyer-Emanuel message, they’re preaching to the choir.

Rahm (4.00 / 3)
“Democratic leaders like Reps. Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.) and Rahm Emanuel (D-Ill.) have carried the day by warning that there is no appetite for such tactics in the districts of vulnerable Democrats, upon whom the party’s new majority status depends.”

Wonderful. The GOP leadership takes moderates and compels them to vote farther to the right than they’d like; the Democratic leadership takes moderates and compels them to vote farther to the right than they’d like.

Emanuel is the enemy within.

Has anybody asked Rahm and Steny… (4.00 / 2)
…why these “vulnerable” Democrats got elected in the first place?

This popped into my head today (0.00 / 0)
The Democratic establishment is pursuing a strategy that involves being as solicitous and as appealing as possible to the far-right wingnuts, when it comes to legislative action.

And the same Democratic establishment is staunchly backing the one presidential candidate who is complete anathema to these far-right wingnuts. (Even though, policy-wise, she’s closer to them than any other candidate.)

  We need leadership cleansing.

Demochickens (4.00 / 1)
Part of what’s wrong with the chickenshit stance taken by Democrats on the Iraq war is that at election time next year, it will be harder for the Democrats to legimately blame Bush and the GOP for the war;  our party has gone along with the administration, and consistently voted to continue funding for the atrocities.  Glass houses, and all that….
