Bush Dog Primary Challenger Ed Fallon on Telecom Immunity

Here’s Ed Fallon, who is challenging Leonard Boswell in Iowa’s third district.  Boswell is in a Blue-ing district and has signed a letter supporting retroactive immunity for the telecom companies for breaking the law.  Fallon has this to say.

I am opposed to giving immunity to the telecom companies. This is an area where Boswell has repeatedly sided with Bush and against his fellow House Democrats, as when he voted for the Protect America Act and the reauthorization of the PATRIOT Act. I am critical of his record because I believe such legislation is too sweeping in granting new police powers to the government and, as a result, infringes on the civil rights and liberties of Americans.

Out of Boswell’s $700k war chest, at least $5000 comes from AT&T; directly.

Bush Dogs need to go.

The TV says that HRC has finally won New Mexico.  Haven’t heard the margin yet…

Slightly O/T, but we're about to see Wynn/Edwards in reverse in TN-09. (0.00 / 0)
That is, Cohen is Edwards, a player on the goodguy side of all the issues (he’s a leader in the anti-immunity fight, fergodsakes), and he’s about to get BEAT by Nikki Tinker, whose main virtue is her responsiveness to the Memphis machine.

The racial politics are devastating, and I’m not really sure what if anything the netroots can do to help.  But identity politics aside, Cohen is exactly the kind of person we like to see in Congress, and he’s gonna get replaced by a hack.

Oh, and don’t miss this flyer.  Makes Wynn’s hitjob on Edwards look positively angelic.

Winning Edwards and losing Cohen means we’ll come out of this primary season with a draw.  We’ll still have proved the larger point, and TN-09 may not be salvageable, I dunno.  But in terms of literal vote counts, we’ll have gained a vote and lost a vote and come out even.

Maybe we can run a primary challenge to Tinker in 2010, before she’s entrenched.

We still come out ahead (0.00 / 0)
I think it’s a shame what is happening to Cohen, but it doesn’t send any kind of message. No liberal Dems are going to look at that race and decide to be less liberal, the worst that will happen is some good white candidates will decide they don’t want to run in black districts. (A similar dynamic happened in my own district in Brooklyn, where David Yassky, a progressive Jew, tried to get the nomination in a race where the black vote was split several ways.  He didn’t win the nomination, though, so Yvette Clarke is my congresswoman.)

Edwards’ race, unlike Cohen’s, sent a pretty clear message to corporate Dems all over the place that they had better shape up.

So we may not have gained any votes, but Edwards’ race was a huge victory, and Cohen’s race will be a comparatively small loss.

I support John McCain because children are too healthy anyway.

I called Boswell's office today (0.00 / 0)
I said that I’m not a constituent, but that I would strongly consider donating money to his primary opponent if he didn’t vote with the leadership on the FISA bill. Don’t know what type of messages he’s getting from Democratic voters in the district, but I hope it’s similar.

I support John McCain because children are too healthy anyway.

Thanks, Matt. (0.00 / 0)
I really appreciate you keeping meticulous track of the Blue Dog timeline and giving me alerts.  I’m actually basing my pattern of political contributions on your information, and so far, I don’t feel any buyers’ remorse.  Although Mark Pera turned out not so good as an investment. Nonetheless, Donna Edwards’ victory is a deep satisfaction, not unlike dark chocolate seeping slowly into the palate.  Please keep it up!

NC-11’s Heath Shuler is planning to vote for immunity.  In a phone conversation, his people laid out the rationale.  I responded, and we’re going to work to educate Rep. Shuler on the desires of his constituents:
